Silicon Motion’s 128TB MonTitan SSD RDK: What It Means for AI Data Centers

Silicon Motion’s 128TB MonTitan RDK is a QLC enterprise SSD design sampled to select partners—not a retail drive. Here are its reported specifications and AI-storage features.

Silicon Motion’s MonTitan 128TB SSD Reference Design Kit (RDK) is a development platform for companies building enterprise and data-center storage—not a retail SSD consumers can buy. Announced for sampling to select partners and customers in March 2025, it combines QLC NAND with a PCIe 5.0 controller and vendor-reported read performance above 14 GB/s sequentially and 3.3 million random-read IOPS. Those are design claims, not independent test results or evidence of a generally available 128TB drive.

What the MonTitan 128TB RDK is—and is not

An SSD reference design kit gives manufacturers a starting point for developing their own drives. Silicon Motion says the MonTitan RDK is intended to help OEMs and partners develop enterprise and data-center SSDs, including products for AI workloads. The company announced sampling of the 128TB design to select partners and customers on March 12, 2025.

That makes the RDK different from a finished retail product. The announcement establishes partner sampling, not general availability, a retail launch, or a price. It also does not establish that a specific manufacturer has brought a 128TB MonTitan-based SSD to market.

Published specifications for the 128TB design

The figures below are Silicon Motion’s published specifications. Performance varies by the configuration being described, so the 2025 announcement figures for the 128TB RDK should not be conflated with the broader platform maximums on the company’s product page.

Item What Silicon Motion reports
Maximum capacity Up to 128TB using QLC NAND for the RDK, per the March 2025 announcement.
Controller Dual-ported SM8366 enterprise controller.
Host interface and standards PCIe Gen5 x4, NVMe 2.0 and OCP 2.5 data-center specifications.
Sequential read More than 14 GB/s for the 128TB design, per the March 2025 announcement.
Random read More than 3.3 million IOPS for the 128TB design, per the March 2025 announcement. The current MonTitan platform page separately lists up to 3.5 million 4K random-read IOPS as a platform maximum.
Controller NAND interface 16 NAND channels operating at up to 2400 MT/s, according to Silicon Motion’s product brief and product page.
Form factors The product page describes reference designs for EDSFF and U.2/U.3; the product brief lists E1.S, E3.x and U.2/U.3.

Silicon Motion’s 2024 product brief also lists configurations of 8TB TLC, 16TB QLC and 16–64TB QLC, with 14,200 MB/s sequential read and up to 3,500 KIOPS random read for the listed variants. That brief predates the 2025 announcement of the 128TB QLC design, so its listed capacity configurations are not a contradiction or a substitute specification for the later RDK.

How the platform is meant to manage AI storage workloads

Flexible Data Placement

NVMe 2.0 Flexible Data Placement (FDP) lets a host communicate placement information to the SSD so data can be organized with workload needs in mind. Silicon Motion positions FDP as one tool for multi-tenant AI pipelines spanning ingest, preparation, training and inference. The announcement describes the intended use; it does not publish a measured reduction in write amplification, a guaranteed endurance improvement, or a benchmark showing a particular AI workload runs faster.

  • STAY COOL, RUN FAST: Push limits, not temperatures. A 5nm controller boosts power efficiency up to 49% over the 990 PRO SSD*, while advanced thermal control keeps performance smooth and reliable.

PerformaShape and quality of service

Silicon Motion’s PerformaShape algorithm is a multi-stage shaping system configured for user-defined quality-of-service (QoS) sets. The goal is to make performance behavior more predictable when storage is shared across workloads. Predictability can matter for data-center operators managing competing tenants, but the published material does not quantify latency guarantees or establish results for a specific deployment.

FDP is not the only firmware option

The MonTitan product page also lists Zoned Namespace (ZNS) firmware stacks. FDP and ZNS are distinct approaches to host-managed data placement; the page identifies platform support, but does not establish that every RDK configuration ships with both enabled or that a customer-facing product has adopted either one.

What changes in Silicon Motion’s 2026 positioning

On August 5, 2026, Silicon Motion described a next-generation RDK for Agentic AI infrastructure. It said PerformaShape is implemented on both the SM8366 PCIe 5.0 and SM8466 PCIe 6.0 enterprise-controller platforms, presenting them as a scalable foundation for AI-server and data-center SSD products.

The company frames enterprise SSDs as a persistent-memory layer for agent workloads, including offloading key-value (KV) cache and retaining context for autonomous agents. That is a product-positioning statement, not a claim that SSD storage replaces system memory or a demonstration of a measured performance outcome. The 2026 announcement does not, by itself, confirm that a 128TB SM8466-based retail or production drive is shipping.

Security, capacity planning and power details

The current MonTitan platform page lists 1024 queue pairs and 128 namespaces, along with AES-256 and TCG Opal self-encrypting-drive support, secure boot, attestation, key wrapping and a hardware root of trust. These are vendor-stated platform capabilities; the page does not show that every feature is enabled in every implementation based on the RDK.

Silicon Motion’s 2024 brief reports average SSD power below 25W and idle power below 5W for its RDK designs. Those figures are not identified as measurements of the later 128TB configuration under a specified workload, so they should not be used as a guaranteed power budget for a system built around that design.

What a prospective buyer or partner should take away

For SSD manufacturers, storage integrators, NAND suppliers and AI-server vendors, the practical value of an RDK is a platform to evaluate and customize rather than a ready-made drive with a published purchase price. A deployment decision would still depend on the partner’s final product configuration and validation, including workload performance, latency behavior, endurance, power, firmware support, form factor and commercial availability.

For individual consumers, there is no supported retail-buying route established in the announcements. The 128TB figure describes Silicon Motion’s sampled QLC RDK design, not a consumer SSD listing. Silicon Motion has published no price or consumer availability for it in the cited announcements.
