The initial base is Siemens Canada’s Oakville headquarters, with related activity identified in Toronto and the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
The project is expected to create up to 90 highly skilled jobs. Public announcements, however, report different investment and funding figures: Siemens announced a $150 million, five-year investment in 2025, while a federal database entry dated April 21, 2026 lists a $70 million project with $23 million in federal support. The sources do not explain how those figures relate.
What Siemens announced
Invest Ontario says Siemens Canada announced the Global AI Manufacturing Technologies Research and Development Center for Battery Production on March 31, 2025. It is an industrial-technology research centre, not a battery-cell factory.
The centre’s initial application is manufacturing for batteries and electric vehicles. Its intended work includes improving production efficiency, quality control and process optimisation, while also supporting broader industrial automation. Siemens’ announced plan covers five years and is expected to create up to 90 highly skilled jobs.

The initial facility is at Siemens Canada’s headquarters in Oakville, Ontario. The announcement also refers to work in Toronto and the Kitchener-Waterloo area. That does not mean there will be a single facility spread across Canada; the locations disclosed are in southern Ontario.
Invest Ontario says Siemens expects to work with local battery manufacturers and universities, but no specific company or institution is named in the available announcement.

What the centre will research
The announcement names several technologies. In a battery plant, they would apply to the equipment, software and data used to make cells, modules or packs rather than to the chemistry inside a cell.
Artificial intelligence
AI could analyse production data to identify anomalies, predict equipment or quality problems and help operators make process decisions. The announcement does not identify a particular model, software release or validated production result.

Edge computing
Edge systems process data close to machines and production lines. Local processing can reduce latency and keep some operations running without sending every decision to a remote cloud, but it also creates additional hardware, maintenance and security requirements.
Machine vision
Cameras and computer-vision software can inspect components, materials and assembly quality. Battery manufacturing presents difficult conditions, including reflective surfaces, changing product variants and the need for carefully labelled training data.
Digital twins
A digital twin is a virtual model of a product, machine or production line. Manufacturers can use one to simulate changes, monitor performance and test process adjustments before making costly physical changes. Its usefulness depends on keeping the model accurate when equipment, materials or processes change.
Cybersecurity
Connecting industrial equipment increases the need to protect operational technology, production data and software from disruption or unauthorised access. Cybersecurity is therefore part of the proposed manufacturing capability, not an optional add-on.

Why this is not battery-chemistry research
Battery-chemistry research focuses on materials, electrochemistry, cell design, degradation and energy density. Siemens’ announcement is about the manufacturing systems used to produce batteries: automation, inspection, simulation, data processing and operational security.
That distinction matters. The project does not establish a new battery chemistry, a commercial battery product or additional cell-production capacity. It is intended to help factories operate more efficiently and reliably.
Why Ontario?
Siemens, Invest Ontario and government officials frame Ontario as a suitable base because of its automotive and battery-manufacturing ecosystem, advanced-manufacturing capabilities, engineering and scientific talent, universities and existing industry relationships.
Those are investment rationales rather than independent proof that Ontario is the best global location. The practical objective is to connect applied research in Oakville and nearby technology centres with manufacturers and higher-education institutions in the province.

- ELECTROSTATIC ATOMIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Generates negatively charged ions to help disperse disinfectant mist evenly across surfaces and spaces.
- FINE MIST COVERAGE: Produces a consistent atomized spray at 70 ml/min with an effective spray distance of up to 3 meters for efficient coverage.
- CORDLESS RECHARGEABLE OPERATION: Powered by a 20V rechargeable battery, providing up to 25–30 minutes of runtime per charge for portable convenience.
- LARGE 1.8L REFILLABLE TANK: Reduces the need for frequent refills and allows you to cover larger areas quickly.
- ADJUSTABLE SPRAY NOZZLE: Rotating nozzle allows you to adjust spray direction and angle for better control and precision.
The centre could support Canada’s battery and EV strategy by improving the software and automation layer of manufacturing. It would not, by itself, expand battery-cell output.
The funding figures do not yet form one reconciled budget
Public sources describe the project at different levels and dates. They should not be added together without confirmation from Siemens or the governments.
| Source and date | Figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Invest Ontario, March 31, 2025 | $150 million | Siemens Canada’s announced investment over five years |
| Invest Ontario, March 31, 2025 | $7.2 million | Ontario support through the Invest Ontario Fund, described as a forgivable loan subject to a definitive agreement |
| Federal Strategic Response Fund database, April 21, 2026 | $23 million | Federal funding associated with the listed Siemens Canada project |
| Federal Strategic Response Fund database, April 21, 2026 | $70 million | Total project cost recorded in that federal listing |
| Federal Strategic Response Fund database, April 21, 2026 | 90 jobs | Jobs created in the listing; the original announcement says up to 90 |
The later federal entry describes an expansion of a global AI manufacturing technologies R&D centre for battery production in Oakville. It records the project as announced, not as proof that all facilities are fully operational.
The available material does not say whether the $70 million is a narrower phase, an eligible-cost calculation, a later scope, a separate government-supported component or another accounting category within the broader $150 million programme. Those are possible explanations, not established facts. The federal record is available at the Strategic Response Fund project database.

What the technology could change in a battery factory
The named tools could be used for several practical manufacturing tasks:
- Quality inspection: machine vision and AI could identify defects or process anomalies earlier.
- Predictive maintenance: equipment data could indicate developing problems and help schedule maintenance before an unplanned stoppage.
- Production simulation: digital twins could test line changes, throughput assumptions or new product variants before physical installation.
- Process optimisation: analytics and edge computing could help adjust production decisions with low latency.
- Change deployment: virtual testing could reduce the time and risk involved in modifying a line.
- Operational security: cybersecurity controls could protect connected equipment and production information.
These are potential applications of the announced technologies, not measured results from Siemens’ Canadian centre. No source reports defect-rate reductions, higher yields, improved uptime, customer deployments or commercial pilot dates.
Implementation questions and risks
Turning an AI demonstration into dependable factory software requires high-quality, well-labelled production data and integration with existing controls. Battery plants may need substantial engineering work before a model can operate safely and consistently.
- Machine-vision performance can change with lighting, reflective materials and new product variants.
- Digital twins can become inaccurate when equipment, recipes or materials change.
- Edge deployments add hardware, patching and lifecycle-management responsibilities.
- More connected industrial systems increase the potential cybersecurity attack surface.
- Automation can create demand for specialised engineers while changing the mix of traditional manufacturing roles.
- Publicly supported projects should be judged against milestones and outcomes, not only announced investment totals.
These are general implementation considerations, not reported failures at Siemens’ Ontario project.
