Do not wait for an “iPhone SE 4.” Apple introduced its expected SE successor as the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025; sales began February 28 at $599 in the United States. For a 2026 buyer, choose an iPhone 13 only at a deep discount, an iPhone 14 when it is nearly the same price as the 13, and the iPhone 16e when you value a newer chip, Apple Intelligence, USB-C, battery life, and a new-device warranty.
Apple’s announcement is at Apple Newsroom.
The “iPhone SE 4” became the iPhone 16e
“iPhone SE 4” was a rumor-era name, not a retail product Apple released. The relevant comparison is now the iPhone 16e versus discounted iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models. Waiting for another SE-branded launch is not a current buying strategy.
The 16e launched at $599 in the U.S. and uses a 6.1-inch OLED display, A18 chip, Apple’s C1 modem, USB-C, Face ID, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a 48MP Fusion camera with a 2x optical-quality mode. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, in black or white.

Why choose the iPhone 13?
The iPhone 13 remains a capable everyday phone with an A15 Bionic chip, OLED screen, Face ID, 5G, MagSafe, and a dual-camera system. Its ultrawide lens is useful for landscapes, interiors, groups, and close subjects.
Buy it only when the discount compensates for its age. A practical rule is to look for at least $200–$250 below a comparable iPhone 16e, with a verified battery, unlocked status, return period, and meaningful warranty. It works well as a low-cost stopgap, child’s phone, travel phone, or secondary device. It is a poor value at near-current-phone pricing, especially for ownership lasting several years.

Why choose the iPhone 14?
The iPhone 14 still uses A15 Bionic, so it is not a major processor generation ahead of the iPhone 13. Its advantages are a newer model year, improved camera processing and low-light capability, Crash Detection, and satellite emergency features in supported regions.
If an iPhone 14 costs only $50–$100 less than a comparable 16e, the 16e is usually the better long-term purchase. If the 14 is nearly the same price as the 13, choose the 14. Its dual-camera layout remains preferable to the 16e if an ultrawide lens is important.

Why choose the iPhone 16e?
Longer useful life
The A18 is substantially newer than the A15 in both older phones. Apple has not promised a specific number of iOS-support years, but the 16e has the strongest longevity case. For an ownership horizon of two or more years, favor it unless the older phone is dramatically cheaper.
Apple Intelligence
Apple designed the 16e for Apple Intelligence; Apple’s comparison information does not list the iPhone 13 or 14 as compatible. Availability depends on iOS version, language, country, and individual feature. Do not buy it for a particular AI function without checking Apple’s current regional requirements.
Rank #4
USB-C and battery
USB-C reduces cable duplication if you are building a new charging setup. The 13 and 14 use Lightning, which may be convenient if you already own many Lightning accessories. Apple claims the 16e provides up to six hours more battery life than iPhone 11 and up to 12 hours more than previous iPhone SE generations; those are Apple-rated comparisons, not independent test results.
Camera trade-off
The 16e’s 48MP Fusion camera offers a newer main sensor, computational photography, Night mode, and a 2x optical-quality mode. It does not automatically beat the iPhone 13 or 14 in every situation: their dedicated ultrawide camera provides framing flexibility the single-camera 16e lacks.

Battery and used-device risk
In 2026, condition can matter more than the model number. Before buying an iPhone 13 or 14, inspect:
- Battery Health percentage and any “Important Battery Message.” Treat around 80% as a practical warning point, not an Apple pass/fail guarantee.
- Parts and service history, including whether unknown replacement parts are reported.
- Activation Lock, carrier-lock status, and IMEI blacklist status.
- Exact storage, regional model, and SIM arrangement.
- Return period, warranty, seller reputation, and whether the listing is used, renewed, manufacturer-refurbished, Apple Certified Refurbished, or open-box.
A low-priced phone needing a battery replacement can cost more than a newer 16e. U.S. iPhone 14 models are eSIM-only, while international versions can differ; verify the regional model if you travel or require a physical SIM. IP ratings are laboratory ratings for new devices and do not guarantee water protection after drops or repairs.
How to compare the real price
Use the effective cost, not the headline installment or “free” label. Carrier promotions can require a trade-in, new line, specific plan, and 24- or 36-month bill credits. Add required service costs and account for the risk of leaving early.
| Price situation | Decision |
|---|---|
| iPhone 13 is at least $200–$250 below a comparable 16e | Reasonable budget choice if battery, warranty, and unlock status are strong. |
| iPhone 14 is $50–$100 below the 16e | Usually choose the 16e unless you need an ultrawide camera or Lightning. |
| iPhone 14 is close to the iPhone 13 price | Choose the 14. |
| Older phone has weak warranty or uncertain refurbishment | Prefer the 16e or Apple-backed refurbishment; the apparent saving may not justify the risk. |
Prices change daily. As a dated reference, Apple’s refurbished store showed an unlocked 128GB iPhone 16e at $419, reduced from $599, when crawled in August 2026; availability and price can change. See the Apple refurbished listing and Apple’s buy page for live terms.
Which phone fits which buyer?
- Lowest-cost acceptable iPhone: iPhone 13, but only with a deep discount and documented condition.

- Best camera flexibility: iPhone 13 or 14 because both include an ultrawide camera.
- Best for Apple Intelligence: iPhone 16e, subject to regional and language support.
- Best temporary or secondary phone: iPhone 13 at a genuinely low effective price.
