Shopify completed its transfer of the U.S. listing for its Class A Subordinate Voting Shares from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq Global Select Market on March 31, 2025. NYSE trading ended after the March 28 session, and Nasdaq trading began at the March 31 open. The ticker remained SHOP, and Shopify’s separate Toronto Stock Exchange listing was unchanged.
The change was a transfer of trading venue—not a new share issue, stock split, ticker change, or move of Shopify’s Canadian listing.
Shopify listing-transfer timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| March 18, 2025 | Shopify announced a voluntary transfer of its U.S. listing from the NYSE to Nasdaq. |
| March 28, 2025, after market close | Trading of Shopify’s U.S.-listed shares on the NYSE ended. |
| March 31, 2025, at market open | The same U.S.-listed shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under SHOP. |
| May 19, 2025 | Shopify entered the Nasdaq-100 Index, a separate event that followed the exchange transfer. |
Shopify’s announcement gives the transfer dates and confirms that the TSX listing would not be affected (Shopify announcement). Its SEC filing describes the action as a voluntary withdrawal from the NYSE and transfer to Nasdaq (SEC Form 8-K).
What changed—and what did not
| Changed | Unchanged |
|---|---|
| U.S. exchange: NYSE to Nasdaq Global Select Market | U.S. ticker: SHOP |
| Exchange label and U.S. consolidated market-data routing | Canadian listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange |
| U.S. listing venue shown by brokers and data vendors | Class A Subordinate Voting Share identity |
| U.S. exchange classification | Shopify’s operating business, as far as the transfer announcement identifies |
Shopify continues to show separate NASDAQ:SHOP and TSX:SHOP listings on its investor-relations stock-information page (Shopify stock information). “Moved to Nasdaq” therefore means that the U.S. venue changed; it does not mean Shopify stopped being listed in Canada or relocated its company.

Why did Shopify move?
Shopify called the transfer voluntary, but its cited announcement did not provide a detailed strategic reason. Claims that the move was intended to lower costs, improve liquidity, attract technology investors, satisfy index rules, or respond to investor demand are possibilities commentators might discuss, not reasons established by Shopify in that announcement.
The listing change itself does not establish a change in Shopify’s products, revenue model, ownership, share class, or financial fundamentals.

What the transfer means for shareholders
Your ticker and security continued
The U.S. ticker stayed SHOP. Nasdaq’s technical notice mapped the same symbol from the NYSE to Nasdaq and identified CUSIP 82509L107 (Nasdaq Trader notice). That continuity is why the event should not be treated as a buy, sell, or rebuy of a different Shopify security.
Broker displays can still look different
Brokerages and portfolio systems may update the exchange name, historical transaction labels, cost-basis screens, or downloadable statements at different times. Check your broker if an old trade is labeled NYSE and a newer quote is labeled Nasdaq, or if a tax document or data export looks different. The cited corporate and Nasdaq notices do not provide one universal instruction for every broker, jurisdiction, or account type.

Canadian shareholders
The TSX listing remained in place under SHOP. The U.S. transfer did not replace the Canadian market listing. Trading currency, settlement processes, and account treatment can depend on the venue and your broker.
Nasdaq listing versus Nasdaq-100 membership
Being listed on Nasdaq does not automatically make a company a Nasdaq-100 constituent. Nasdaq separately announced Shopify’s addition to the Nasdaq-100, effective before market open on May 19, 2025, replacing MongoDB (Nasdaq index announcement).

These are different concepts:
- Exchange listing: where the shares trade, now Nasdaq for Shopify’s U.S. listing.
- Index membership: whether an index includes the company, which began later for the Nasdaq-100.
- Ticker: the trading identifier, still
SHOPin both markets. - Market-data source: the feeds that distribute quotes and trades.
Market-data and trading-system implications
Nasdaq instructed redistributors to update Shopify’s listing market after the NYSE close on March 28, 2025. Quotes and trades were to appear through Nasdaq’s UTP feeds beginning in premarket trading on March 31, while historical SHOP data was to be maintained.
As a result, professional users may see:
- Historical charts retaining NYSE labels before March 31 and Nasdaq labels afterward.
- New exchange-specific feed or venue identifiers in terminals and databases.
- Different exchange-attributed trading statistics even though the ticker and share identity stayed continuous.
- Metadata changes that are not evidence of a split, issuance, or other change in the number of shares held.
Data vendors can implement these label and feed changes on their own schedules, so a temporary discrepancy between systems does not by itself indicate a trading problem.

Common misconceptions
“Shopify moved to the United States.”
No. Shopify already had a U.S. listing. Only that listing’s exchange changed, while the TSX listing continued.
“The ticker changed.”
No. The symbol remained SHOP on Nasdaq and the TSX.
“The Nasdaq move caused the Nasdaq-100 addition.”
The index announcement was separate. The available announcements establish the dates and events, not a causal link between them.
“This was a stock split or new financing.”
The cited filings describe a listing transfer, not a split, offering, merger, or ownership restructuring.

Bottom line for SHOP holders
Shopify’s U.S. listing is now on Nasdaq, effective March 31, 2025. The ticker is still SHOP, the Class A Subordinate Voting Shares and Nasdaq-identified CUSIP remained continuous, and the TSX listing was unaffected. Investors generally need to focus on how their own broker or data system records the venue change rather than treating it as a new security. Shopify’s announcement confirmed the voluntary transfer but did not state a detailed rationale.
