Shopify experienced a partial outage on Monday, December 1, 2025, disrupting account logins and Shopify POS access for some merchants during Cyber Monday. Shopify said it identified and fixed a problem in its login authentication flow and was seeing signs of recovery, but no universal restoration time or confirmed count of affected businesses was published.

What happened on Cyber Monday

Merchants began reporting trouble at approximately 6:45 a.m. Pacific Time, according to contemporaneous coverage by TechCrunch. Symptoms included failed Shopify admin logins, error messages and inability to access Shopify POS. Some businesses said they could not process in-person transactions, while support queues were reportedly longer than normal.

This was not established as a complete Shopify storefront failure. Community reports indicated that some public storefronts continued operating while merchants could not reach the backend. Customers may therefore have been able to browse or place online orders even when the merchant could not review, edit or fulfill them.

Which Shopify services were affected?

Service or function What the available evidence shows
Shopify account and admin login Some merchants could not authenticate or access the admin.
Shopify POS Some businesses could not log in or use POS, including for in-person transactions.
Online storefronts A universal storefront outage was not established; some merchants reported storefront availability.
Checkout Some coverage described checkout problems for certain businesses, but not a platform-wide failure.
Shopify Payments No standalone Shopify Payments outage was established in the available reporting.
Help and support Shopify reportedly warned of longer-than-normal support waits.

Shopify’s POS documentation explains why an authentication incident can affect physical retail. Initial POS access uses Shopify account credentials, after which staff generally use POS PINs; users may also be prompted for additional authentication. See Shopify’s POS login guidance and its account-security guidance. There is no evidence that two-step verification itself caused this incident.

Timeline and reported cause

  1. About 6:45 a.m. PT, December 1: merchants began reporting login and POS problems, according to TechCrunch’s contemporaneous account.
  2. Later that day: Shopify said it had identified and remedied a problem in the login authentication flow.
  3. Recovery period: Shopify reported signs of recovery and continued monitoring the platform, while support demand remained elevated.

The public information does not provide a reliable, universal “all clear” timestamp. It also does not identify the specific software component, deployment, configuration, dependency or capacity condition behind the authentication-flow failure.

How large and serious was the disruption?

Downdetector recorded about 4,000 user-submitted reports, as reported by TechCrunch. Those reports are evidence of elevated complaints, not a count of unique merchants, failed orders or lost revenue. No verified public figure establishes how many businesses were affected or how long each one remained blocked.

The timing made the incident operationally important. Shopify later reported that merchants generated $14.6 billion in global sales and served more than 81 million customers during the 2025 Black Friday–Cyber Monday weekend, with a reported peak of $5.1 million in sales per minute at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday. These figures, published in Shopify’s BFCM announcement, provide scale but do not measure sales lost because of the outage or prove that every merchant recovered without harm.

There is also no evidence in the available material of a cyberattack, data breach or customer-data exposure. Shopify’s stated explanation was an authentication-flow problem.

Why an admin outage is different from a storefront outage

Centralized commerce systems separate what shoppers see from what merchants use to operate the business. A public store can remain reachable while the owner cannot access orders, inventory, fulfillment settings or customer-service tools. In a physical shop, POS authentication can fail at the same time even if online checkout continues.

  • Online sales may continue: orders can arrive while staff cannot confirm or manage them.
  • Operations can stall: fulfillment, cancellations, edits and inventory decisions may be delayed.
  • Retail sales can stop: staff who cannot authenticate POS may be unable to complete in-person transactions through Shopify.

What merchants should check after access returns

  1. Verify normal admin access. Sign in through the standard Shopify login rather than repeatedly retrying an uncertain session.
  2. Audit orders created during the incident. Look for missing orders, abandoned carts, incomplete payments and duplicate submissions.
  3. Reconcile POS activity. Compare Shopify records with card-processor settlements, receipts, cash totals and inventory movements.
  4. Confirm payment status before fulfillment. Do not ship an order merely because an order record exists, and do not automatically recharge a customer whose payment result is unclear.
  5. Check inventory synchronization. Correct quantities if sales were recorded manually or through another channel while Shopify was unavailable.
  6. Review staff authentication. Confirm that affected employees can sign in and complete any required security prompts without sharing administrator credentials.
  7. Preserve evidence. Save screenshots, error messages, receipt numbers and timestamps when seeking support or documenting a claim.
  8. Monitor official updates. Check Shopify’s status communications and support channels for follow-up notices or a post-incident explanation.

The reliability lesson for Shopify merchants

An integrated platform can simplify storefront, checkout, payments, inventory, admin and POS management, but it also concentrates operational dependency. Shopify describes its major-service uptime as 99.9% over the prior 90 days in its platform overview; that metric includes Shopify’s stated exclusions for factors such as third-party services, customizations, maintenance and external events. It is a platform metric, not a guarantee that every merchant workflow will be available at every moment.

The practical response is not necessarily to abandon Shopify after one incident. A documented fallback payment method, independent order and inventory backups, status monitoring and a tested manual-order procedure can reduce the effect of the next authentication or access failure.

What remains unknown

Shopify reported that the authentication issue was fixed and recovery was underway, but the public information does not establish a precise end time, a confirmed affected-merchant count, failed-order total or financial-loss estimate. Aggregate BFCM sales cannot resolve those merchant-level questions.
