She Thought Her Old Crock Was Worth $20—Then It Sold for $32,000 at Auction

A 30-gallon Red Wing crock with a blue butterfly and two maker’s stamps reportedly sold for $32,000 after its owners planned to ask $20. Here’s what made the sale unusual and what other crock owners should check.

A Nebraska family expected about $20 for a crock they had used as a porch table. At auction on January 10, 2026, it sold for a reported $32,000. The price was tied to a particular 30-gallon Red Wing Stoneware piece—with a blue butterfly, two Red Wing stamps and salt glaze—not to age alone. This one sale is not a guide to what an ordinary old crock is worth.

How the crock went from porch table to $32,000 sale

According to Martha Stewart’s January 29, 2026 report, Lois Jurgens had kept the crock on her Nebraska home’s back porch for decades and planned to ask $20 for it at a garage sale. It was too heavy to move. After the family saw a newspaper notice for an antiques and collectibles auction, they arranged to include it in the sale.

The auction took place January 10, 2026. Bidding reportedly opened at $1,000, and the crock sold to a Kansas collector for $32,000. Bramer Auction & Realty had shared photos online before the auction, drawing calls from collectors around the country. The reporting does not state whether the final figure includes a buyer’s premium or provide a formal auction record.

Jurgens was quoted by Martha Stewart as saying, “I just couldn’t believe it,” and, “It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever gotten on my birthday.”

Night Glaze Hand Painted Ceramic Vase Dark Brown - 14.8 Inchs Tall
  • ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST CERAMIC ART — Every side of this hand-painted vase reads as an individual abstract composition. Bold brushstrokes in warm ivory and mustard yellow arc across a deep coffee-brown ground, creating a surface that evokes a studio painting more than a decorative object. High-fired to a luminous gloss, the glaze captures gestural movement in permanent ceramic form.
  • SCULPTURAL DOUBLE-HANDLE SILHOUETTE — Each handle is individually hand-rolled and applied, creating organic, asymmetrical forms that echo ancient pottery traditions. The full-bodied jar with hand-twisted ears establishes a grounded, collected presence — equally at home on a gallery pedestal or an entryway console. A modern take on timeless vessel architecture.
  • HANDCRAFTED TEXTURE AND GLAZE DEPTH — The vase body bears the honest marks of its making: subtle unevenness, fingertip impressions, and natural hand-applied glaze variation. Deep coffee-brown layers transition into hand-painted white granular glaze and mustard yellow accents, building a tactile surface that rewards close inspection and evolves with changing light.
  • CURATED FOR DESIGN-LED SPACES — Purpose-built for Collected Contemporary, Artful Rustic, and gallery interiors. Display it empty and alone as a sculptural statement on a sideboard, fireplace mantle, or entryway pedestal. Let the abstract brushwork and ceramic volume command the space. Pairs naturally with abstract art, aged wood, and stone surfaces.
  • AUTHENTIC COLLECTIBLE CRAFT — This is not a standardized decorative pattern but a singular ceramic art piece where every brushstroke records the artist's hand. The tension between a timeless double-handle vessel form and bold contemporary expressionist glaze work makes each vase a genuine conversation piece. For art lovers and design collectors who seek objects with soul.

What made this crock stand out

The reported sale involved a specific, large Red Wing Stoneware crock, not an unidentified piece of old kitchenware. Martha Stewart described it as a 30-gallon salt-glazed crock with molded side handles, a blue butterfly illustration and two stamps bearing the Red Wing name. The article estimates that it was made between 1877 and 1900.

  • Maker and marks: Red Wing Stoneware identification and two Red Wing stamps were among the features reported.
  • Size and form: Its 30-gallon capacity and molded handles distinguished it from smaller, simpler crocks.
  • Decoration and glaze: A blue butterfly and salt glaze contributed to its unusual appearance.
  • Condition and scarcity: The report credited rarity and condition, and auctioneer Ken Bramer called it unusual. He said it was the first of that kind he had seen in 40 years of auctioneering.

The date range and rarity description are reported estimates and an auctioneer’s characterization, not an independent authentication or a published condition assessment. The available report does not establish how much each feature contributed to the winning bid.

How the reported date fits Red Wing’s history

The Wisconsin Pottery Association’s Red Wing history says pottery was made in Red Wing, Minnesota, from 1861 to 1967 and that the Red Wing Stoneware Company was organized in 1877. It notes that the area produced stoneware in large quantities. Around the 1906 consolidation, transparent white glaze replaced salt glaze or brown Albany slip used earlier.

That history makes the sale report’s 1877–1900 estimate plausible in broad context, but it does not authenticate this individual crock or confirm its date. The association lists Ray Reiss’s Red Wing Art Pottery (1995) and Marion John Nelson’s Art Pottery of the Midwest (1988) among its primary references for Red Wing history.

Why $32,000 is not a normal value estimate

The $32,000 result is a reported price for one distinctive object that attracted collector attention after its photos circulated. It does not show that old crocks generally sell for that amount, or that every Red Wing crock—or even every large, decorated one—will approach it. The report does not include comparable sales, a formal appraisal, a detailed condition report or buyer’s premium terms.

The owner’s planned $20 garage-sale ask was not an appraisal either. It shows how easily an unusual object can be overlooked when its maker, markings, decoration and collector demand are not recognized; it cannot be used as the starting point for valuing another crock.

What to check if you own an old Red Wing crock

Use the sale as a reason to identify a piece carefully, not as a promise of a windfall. Before setting a price or accepting an offer, document the features that can help a specialist identify it and compare it with genuinely similar auction sales.

  1. Record the marks. Photograph every stamp, number, logo or other mark clearly, including its location on the crock. Do not assume that a Red Wing mark alone makes it comparable to the auction piece.
  2. Measure and describe the form. Note the capacity if known, dimensions, handles and any distinctive shape. Avoid estimating capacity as fact if you have not verified it.
  3. Document glaze and decoration. Photograph the surface, design and any color or glaze details in good light. A distinctive motif may matter, but the sale report does not assign a separate value to the butterfly or salt glaze.
  4. Describe condition honestly. Record chips, cracks, hairline fractures, repairs, repainting or other changes. The sale article cites condition as a factor but does not provide a grading standard or condition report for this crock.
  5. Gather provenance where available. Keep family history, old receipts or other documentation, while distinguishing documented history from what has simply been passed down.
  6. Seek relevant comparables or specialist advice. Compare results for pieces with similar maker, size, form, decoration and condition, rather than relying on a single headline sale. The sources here do not provide a formal valuation method or market-wide price data.

The Wisconsin Pottery Association identifies Reiss’s Red Wing Art Pottery as a primary reference for the subject. A reference can help with identification, but it is not a substitute for an appraisal of a specific object.
