SEO is the established practice of improving a website’s visibility and usefulness in search; GEO is a newer label for work aimed at visibility in generative AI answers. For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, the distinction is mainly about the search experience and how you measure discovery—not a separate set of ranking rules. Google says its generative features rely on core Search systems and indexed pages, so foundational SEO still matters.
What do SEO and GEO mean?
SEO: the broad practice
Search engine optimization (SEO) means making a website better for search engines and the people who use them. That includes helping search engines crawl and understand pages, while publishing useful content that meets readers’ needs. Google’s SEO Starter Guide explains its approach to SEO.
GEO: visibility in generative answers
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a newer term for efforts intended to improve a brand’s or page’s visibility in generative AI search experiences. Google also identifies answer engine optimization (AEO) as a term used for this kind of work. Google’s position is that optimizing for its generative search features is still optimizing for the search experience—and therefore still SEO. The terminology does not establish a universal standard for every AI assistant or answer engine. Google’s guide to generative AI features in Search describes its own scope.
What changes—and what carries over—in Google’s AI search?
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on core Search ranking and quality systems, as well as relevant pages in Google’s Search index. Its explanation includes grounding—retrieving current pages—and query fan-out, where related queries seek additional information for a response. These are features of Google’s systems, not a guarantee that any particular page will be selected or cited.

The practical SEO foundation carries over: make pages accessible to crawling and indexing, keep their technical structure clear, and publish reliable, distinctive content that serves people. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in ordinary Search to be eligible for its generative AI features. Meeting those requirements still does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve the page. See Google’s eligibility guidance.
Which GEO tactics should you treat cautiously?
Google’s recommendations address Google Search specifically; they should not be generalized to independently operated AI products. For Google visibility, it says site owners do not need an llms.txt file or special AI markup, and that those files neither help nor harm visibility. Google also says there is no required content “chunking” format, no need to rewrite pages specifically for AI, and no reason to pursue inauthentic mentions. Structured data is not required for generative AI search, though it can still help a page qualify for other Search rich results. Google’s guide sets out these points.

Be skeptical of claims that a particular formula, tool, or mention strategy guarantees an AI answer or citation. Google advises checking third-party SEO and GEO recommendations against its official guidance. Third-party tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance; their predictions are their own. Treat tool results as estimates or workflow aids, and check exactly which platforms and signals a tool measures. Google’s guidance on third-party SEO advice explains the limits.
How should you measure SEO and GEO work?
Use first-party reporting for Google’s features
Google points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console to understand how people discover a site through generative AI features on Google Search and Discover. It is Google-specific reporting, not a cross-platform dashboard of visibility across all AI assistants. See Google’s Search Console guidance.

Choose the work by surface, eligibility, and outcome
- Surface: Decide whether you want to improve traditional search visibility, visibility in Google’s AI features, or discovery through a separately operated answer product. The relevant systems and evidence may differ.
- Eligibility: Check whether the page can be crawled, indexed, and served on the platform in question, including any platform-specific conditions.
- Content value: Prioritize original expertise, a distinct point of view, and useful information that adds more than a commodity summary. Google’s guidance on helpful content for generative AI features emphasizes these qualities.
- Measurement: Use Search Console for the Google reporting it provides. If using a third-party estimate, verify its platform coverage and what it measures rather than treating it as access to Google’s internal systems.
- Business result: Evaluate whether discovery leads to qualified visits, engagement, leads, or sales. A mention or visibility estimate alone does not establish business value.
When does each matter?
SEO matters as the foundation when you need a site to be accessible, understandable, useful, and discoverable in search. Those fundamentals also affect eligibility for Google’s generative features.
GEO matters as a useful lens when you are specifically considering how people encounter your brand or pages in generative answers, or how to measure that discovery. For Google, that lens does not replace SEO with a separate optimization system. For another AI product, verify its own documentation rather than assuming Google’s guidance applies.
