SEO in 2024 was less about finding a new ranking trick and more about proving usefulness, originality, expertise, and technical reliability as search results adapted to AI. Google introduced AI Overviews, changed multiple core ranking systems, and added spam policies aimed at scaled low-value content, expired-domain abuse, and third-party content exploiting a site’s reputation. For businesses and publishers, the practical response was to improve the substance and reliability of their sites—not to assume AI replaced traditional SEO.
This is a retrospective: 2024 is over. It separates the major developments from predictions that were overstated and turns them into priorities that still make sense for content and marketing teams.
The SEO developments that mattered most in 2024
The shifts were not equally important for every site. AI search, content quality, and Google’s spam policies affected the broadest set of publishers; local, video, ecommerce, and international work depended more on the business model.
- AI changed the search-results experience. Google launched AI Overviews in 2024. That added a new way for users to encounter synthesized answers and sources, but did not make conventional SEO obsolete.
- Original, useful content became a clearer differentiator. Generic summaries had a harder case to make than pages with original reporting, expertise, testing, or data.
- Google targeted scaled and reputation-abusing content. Its March 2024 update paired core-system changes with new or expanded spam policies.
- Trust and first-hand experience mattered in practice. Publishers needed evidence behind claims—not merely an author biography or a claim of expertise.
- Technical SEO remained the foundation. Crawlability, indexability, mobile usability, and performance helped search engines and people access content, but could not rescue weak pages.
- Visibility extended beyond standard web listings. Video, images, local results, shopping features, snippets, and AI answers could all matter depending on the query.
- Measurement needed to connect search to business outcomes. Rankings alone did not show whether organic visits generated leads, sales, bookings, or revenue.
- AI was a workflow tool, not a content strategy. It could reduce production friction, but automated volume without meaningful value created risk rather than a durable advantage.
How AI changed search—and what it did not prove
AI-assisted content was not automatically prohibited
Google’s guidance distinguishes between using automation to help create useful material and using it primarily to manipulate rankings. The policy concern is manipulative or low-value output, not simply whether AI took part in drafting. See Google’s people-first content guidance.

AI can assist with research organization, outlines, editing, repurposing, data classification, or internal-link suggestions. A responsible workflow still requires a human to verify facts and sources, add subject knowledge, and make sure the finished page serves a real reader. It is a poor fit when a page depends on personal testing, specialist judgment, or advice with health, financial, legal, or safety consequences and the publisher cannot reliably verify the output.
Risk rises when a site publishes large batches of lightly reviewed pages, rephrases existing results without adding insight, invents experience or evidence, or creates near-identical location and comparison pages just to capture queries. Fluent prose does not establish accuracy or originality.
AI Overviews added a new surface, not a settled traffic rule
Google announced AI Overviews in 2024 as a feature integrated with its core Search systems, intended to help with longer and more complex queries. Google said links in the feature could lead to higher-quality visits; treat that as Google’s claim, not proof of a universal traffic increase. The announcement is at Google’s May 2024 AI Overviews update.
Effects can differ by query, country, device, industry, and how the feature appears. A simple factual query may be answered without a click; a complex decision may still send a user to sources for deeper evidence. A site may be cited, receive a visit, or influence a later branded search without that effect being captured by a conventional ranking report. The available facts do not establish that AI Overviews universally increased or decreased organic traffic.

The best defensive strategy is to publish material that is difficult to reduce to a generic summary: original data, expert analysis, useful tools, credible reviews, demonstrations, and specific experience. This is valuable whether a result appears as a blue link, a citation, or another search feature.

Measure more than rankings
Search Console and analytics answer different questions. Search Console reports Google Search impressions, clicks, queries, and indexing information; analytics helps connect visits to on-site actions. Add business measures such as qualified leads, sales, bookings, revenue, and assisted conversions. Track branded and non-branded demand separately where possible, along with topic visibility, landing-page engagement, and conversion quality.
Traditional rank tracking cannot fully show whether a brand appeared in an AI answer, whether a search ended without a click, or whether exposure influenced a later visit. Avoid treating an average-position change, a third-party authority score, or a single traffic snapshot as a complete account of performance.

Core updates are broad changes to Google’s systems, not direct penalties aimed at individual pages. A traffic decline around an update warrants diagnosis, but timing alone does not prove the update caused it or identify what to change. Google explains this distinction in its core updates guidance.
Scaled content abuse
The issue is not simply that a page was produced by a person or a machine. Google’s policy focuses on generating many pages at scale with little value, primarily to manipulate rankings. Examples include templated pages that swap locations or products without useful differences, lightly edited AI articles, and aggregated summaries without original contribution.
Programmatic pages can make sense when each one answers a genuine need, draws on accurate maintained data, and provides meaningful information beyond a changed keyword. If only the place name or product changes, the result may be a large set of near-duplicates with little value to users.

Expired-domain and site-reputation abuse
Expired-domain abuse involves using a domain’s previous reputation to publish unrelated or low-value material. Site-reputation abuse concerns third-party content published with little or no first-party oversight to exploit the host site’s ranking signals. Third-party content is not automatically spam; the concern is the combination of weak editorial oversight, a mismatch with the host’s purpose or audience, and apparent exploitation of the host’s reputation.
Publishers should review partner and outsourced content across subdirectories and subdomains, document editorial responsibility, and ensure published material meets the same standards as their own. Moving problematic content elsewhere without addressing its quality is not a meaningful remedy.
What useful, credible content looked like
Google’s guidance emphasizes original information, reporting, research, and analysis intended to benefit people. It also says SEO can support people-first content. The practical test is whether a page gives readers something reliable and useful beyond a rearrangement of what already ranks.
- Show the evidence. Use original research, data, photographs, screenshots, demonstrations, or a transparent testing method where they genuinely support the page.
- Make experience specific. Explain who tested or used something, under what conditions, and what its limitations were. Do not claim experience that did not happen.
- Make accountability visible. Identify relevant authors and reviewers, and disclose commercial relationships where they affect how readers should interpret a recommendation.
- Answer the decision, not just the headline. Cover practical follow-up questions, trade-offs, failure conditions, and the reader’s next step.
- Maintain accuracy. Update pages when facts change, and consolidate overlapping pages when they serve the same need.
For health, finance, legal, safety, and other high-impact subjects, use strong sourcing and appropriately qualified review. An author biography can help readers assess a page, but credentials alone do not establish that its claims are trustworthy.
E-E-A-T is a framework, not a ranking switch
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness—E-E-A-T—are useful concepts for evaluating quality. They are not a simple checklist or a single directly measurable ranking factor. Google says quality-rater data is not used directly in its ranking algorithms; its helpful-content guidance explains the distinction. Demonstrate trust through evidence, sound editorial practice, relevant expertise, and accurate claims rather than adding superficial signals.

Technical SEO: make good pages accessible and usable
Technical work is infrastructure. A site still needs to let crawlers discover, render, and index the right pages, and let people use them. Review technical health alongside content rather than treating it as a substitute for relevance or originality.

- Internal links: Help users and search engines find important pages through clear navigation and contextual links.
- Rendering: Confirm that important content and links remain accessible when JavaScript is involved.
- Duplication: Find near-duplicate URLs, overlapping pages, and faceted navigation that creates unnecessary crawl paths.
- Structured data: Use accurate markup that matches visible page content. It can help search engines understand a page or make it eligible for a search feature, but it does not guarantee a rich result or higher ranking.
- Mobile, images, and video: Check that pages work on mobile and that media is useful, appropriately sized, and not needlessly slowing the page.
- International SEO: Where relevant, validate language and regional targeting and hreflang implementation.
Use Core Web Vitals to find real user friction
Core Web Vitals are useful performance and experience measures, not a guaranteed ranking shortcut. Fixing poor performance can also make a site easier to use and may support conversion, but passing scores cannot compensate for weak content or a lack of trust.
- Identify the page templates with poor field performance and, where available, review real-user information in Search Console.
- Reproduce problems with PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse on representative pages.
- Address the largest bottleneck first: slow server response, render-blocking resources, oversized images, excessive JavaScript, or layout shifts from ads, embeds, and dynamic elements.
- Re-test representative templates after deployment and monitor field data over time.
Keywords still mattered; intent mattered more than repetition
Search engines still need to understand relevance. In 2024, a sound approach was to organize content around what people were trying to do, use the vocabulary readers and experts naturally use, and answer the main question and its useful follow-ups. Exact-match repetition is not a replacement for coverage or clarity.
- Informational: Learn what something is, why it happens, or how it works.
- Commercial investigation: Compare options, alternatives, or reviews before deciding.
- Transactional: Buy, sign up, book, or find pricing.
- Navigational: Reach a particular brand or product.
- Local: Find nearby services, hours, directions, or service areas.
Create separate pages when user needs materially differ. Publishing one page for every minor keyword variation can create cannibalization, thin content, and unnecessary maintenance.
Links remained useful when they were earned
Backlinks were not “dead,” but raw link volume and manipulative tactics were not a durable strategy. Links can help people discover material and can reflect reputation; the strongest approach is to give relevant publishers a reason to cite or share a page.

- Offer expert commentary and research that is genuinely useful to journalists or industry publications.
- Build relevant partnerships and industry resources.
- Avoid paid links intended to pass ranking credit, bulk guest-post networks, automated comment links, irrelevant directories, and link exchanges at scale.
Search visibility beyond standard web results
Not every business needs to invest equally in every surface. Choose based on how customers search and what the business offers.
Video and images
For video, make titles and descriptions clear, use chapters and transcripts where useful, and show real demonstrations or use cases. YouTube search and embedded video can serve needs that a text page cannot. For images, use descriptive filenames and alt text, responsive formats, compression, and original photography when it improves understanding or trust. Avoid adding heavy decorative media without a reader benefit.
Local search
Local businesses should keep business details accurate, maintain a complete Google Business Profile, respond appropriately to reviews, clarify service areas, and show credible photos of actual operations. A local landing page should contain genuine local information rather than a template with a town name swapped in.
Ecommerce
Product pages should keep titles, descriptions, availability, pricing, reviews, and returns information accurate. Maintain product feeds and structured data, handle variants clearly, and control faceted navigation so it does not create an unmanageable set of duplicate URLs.
A practical SEO plan for a small business or publisher
First 30 days: establish a baseline and find risk
- Set up or review Google Search Console and analytics; record search visibility and business conversions.
- Check indexability and key page templates, and investigate declining pages before making broad changes.
- Review outsourced and AI-assisted content for accuracy, originality, and editorial ownership.
- Map priority topics to actual business outcomes rather than search volume alone.
Days 31–60: improve the pages that matter
- Refresh the most valuable existing pages with missing evidence, useful examples, and expert review where appropriate.
- Consolidate genuinely overlapping pages with careful redirects where needed.
- Fix the most consequential technical and performance issues on important templates.
- Track topic visibility, conversions, and landing-page quality—not only individual positions.
Days 61–90: build differentiated visibility
- Develop original research, data, tools, or demonstrations that competitors cannot easily reproduce.
- Expand into video, local, image, or ecommerce surfaces when they match customer behavior.
- Test internal-link improvements and review their effect on discovery and user journeys.
- Set a documented AI-use policy covering verification, authorship, and topics that require expert input.
Predictions that needed qualification
- “AI will kill SEO.” Too broad. Search presentation changed, but Google continued to emphasize conventional content and technical fundamentals.
- “Google penalizes all AI content.” Not supported by its stated policy; the concern is manipulative or low-value automation.
- “E-E-A-T is a ranking factor you can optimize directly.” It is more useful as a quality framework than a ranking switch.
- “Core Web Vitals are the main ranking trend.” Performance matters, but cannot make irrelevant or unoriginal content valuable.
- “Keywords no longer matter.” Relevance still matters; the useful shift was toward intent and natural, complete coverage.
- “Backlinks are useless now.” This confuses manipulative acquisition with links earned through useful work.
- “Every site should publish at scale.” More pages help only when they meet distinct needs and provide meaningful value.
What the 2024 lessons mean for your next SEO decision
Prioritize the work closest to customer value: make important pages accurate and distinct, ensure search engines can reach them, and measure whether organic visibility brings qualified business. AI tools, technical fixes, and broader search surfaces can support that work, but none replaces a clear reason for a reader to trust and use your site.
