Short answer: Semrush Free is the better choice for quick, limited research on competitors and other domains. Ahrefs Free is better for recurring monitoring of a website you own and can verify. Ahrefs’ standalone free tools are useful for occasional spot checks, but they are not the same as full Ahrefs access. Neither free option replaces a paid SEO suite.

What “free” means in each platform
These products are often compared as if they were equivalent plans, but they are different.
Semrush free account
A registered Semrush account gives limited access inside the platform. It is designed for occasional reports and small experiments, with daily query and project limits.

Semrush Free Tools
Semrush also publishes individual tools that may work without a full subscription, including SEO Checker, Website Authority Checker, Keyword Tool, Backlink Checker, SERP Checker, Competitor Finder and traffic tools. Its SEO directory also includes AI-visibility checks: Semrush free SEO tools. A public checker is not an unrestricted version of the corresponding paid database.
Ahrefs Free
Ahrefs renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools as Ahrefs Free. The account is intended mainly for websites you can verify and includes limited Site Explorer, Site Audit, Web Analytics, Social Media Manager, AI Content Helper and SEO Toolbar access. See Ahrefs Free and the Webmaster Tools announcement.
Ahrefs standalone free tools
Ahrefs separately offers public utilities such as Keyword Generator, Backlink Checker, Keyword Difficulty Checker, SERP Checker and Website Authority Checker. They return limited or sample results, rather than full access to Keywords Explorer or Site Explorer. The current list is described in the Ahrefs FAQ.
Free account versus trial
Semrush’s free account is ongoing limited access; its seven-day trial is a separate test of paid functionality. Ahrefs describes Ahrefs Free as an ongoing account rather than a countdown trial, and says paid users can return to the free tier after downgrading: Ahrefs pricing.

Ownership verification is the dividing line. Ahrefs requires verification for Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics features in the free account, while Semrush’s free account and public tools are generally more open to arbitrary domains. Published account limits
Semrush’s official free-account guide lists $0 access with 10 queries per day for several domain, keyword, competitor and backlink functions, a 100-page Site Audit, 10 tracked keywords and one site audit at a time. These figures come from the guide, not a promise that every product area, account, country or later policy will expose identical quotas: Semrush free-account guide.
Where it is useful
- Check a competitor’s domain without obtaining ownership access.
- Get a quick domain, authority, traffic or backlink snapshot.
- Generate a small set of keyword ideas and inspect basic metrics.
- Run a limited technical audit or track a handful of priority terms.
- Experiment with public SERP and AI-visibility checkers.
Where the limits hurt
Ten daily queries disappear quickly when you compare several competitors or repeatedly refine a keyword list. Ten tracked keywords cannot represent a normal content site or client campaign, and a 100-page crawl may miss most URLs on a larger site. Estimated traffic and visibility are modeled data, not your actual Analytics numbers. Semrush also notes audit concurrency and troubleshooting conditions in its Site Audit documentation.
Ahrefs Free in practice
Published account allowances
Ahrefs lists these free-account limits: up to 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once in Site Explorer, 5,000 crawl credits per month per project in Site Audit, 1 million Web Analytics events per project, unlimited Social Media Manager posts and channels, one AI Content Helper document per month, and SEO Toolbar metrics limited to Domain Rating (DR) and URL Rating (UR) while other listed on-page features remain available. After you verify a property, Ahrefs Free is suited to continuing work on that site: inspect ranking keywords and backlinks, schedule technical crawls and review basic analytics. Verification details and labels can change, so follow the current setup flow rather than relying on an old screenshot.
What it does not unlock
It is not a free competitor-research suite. A public Backlink Checker does not equal unrestricted Site Explorer, and public keyword tools do not equal paid Keywords Explorer. You may inspect samples for another domain, but the strongest recurring features remain tied to properties you control.

Choose by the job you need done
“I need to check a competitor.”
Start with Semrush Free or its public tools. You can query another domain without ownership verification, subject to daily caps and report-specific limits. Treat traffic, keyword counts and authority scores as estimates that vary by country, device, date and database.
“I need to maintain my own website.”
Choose Ahrefs Free after verifying the correct property. Its recurring audit, link and ranking visibility is a better free-tier fit than a collection of one-off checks. Use Google Search Console for authoritative Google impressions, clicks, queries and average positions.

Semrush generally offers more breadth for quick discovery because its free account and public Keyword Tool can be used for research across domains. Ahrefs’ Keyword Generator is useful for occasional ideas and difficulty checks. Neither free option supports serious volume research, historical comparisons or large exports.
“I need backlinks.”
For your own site, Ahrefs Free provides the more natural ongoing workflow once verified. For a quick sample from a competitor, Semrush’s limited queries and Backlink Checker are more accessible. Counts will differ because crawlers discover and index links at different times.
“I need a technical audit.”
Ahrefs is the better recurring free choice when 5,000 monthly crawl credits are sufficient. Semrush’s 100-page allowance is useful for a small one-off check. Crawl credits are not automatically 5,000 unique pages: JavaScript, redirects, repeated resources and crawl settings can consume them differently.

“I need rankings.”
Semrush’s published allowance of 10 tracked keywords can support a small experiment. A one-time SERP check from either vendor is not a trend, and rankings change by location, device, language, personalization, SERP features and date.
“I want AI-search visibility.”
Semrush is the clearer free starting point because it publicly promotes AI Search Visibility and AI Overviews checks. Confirm the report, AI platform, country and date range before comparing results; do not assume it is equivalent to a paid monitoring campaign.

Both platforms model competitor traffic, rankings, keyword visibility and links from proprietary crawlers and databases. Their numbers are useful for comparison and prioritization, not a site’s exact traffic or revenue. For a verified property, combine Ahrefs’ crawl and link data with Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Neither Authority Score, Domain Rating nor URL Rating is a Google ranking factor.
What neither free option can replace
- Large-scale exports, API access, scheduled reports or white-label client reporting.
- Reliable daily rank tracking across many keywords and locations.
- Comprehensive historical competitor research.
- Exact traffic, conversion or revenue measurement.
- Complete backlink or keyword coverage from a public preview.
- Audit coverage for a large site when crawl quotas are exceeded.
Audits can also be incomplete because of robots.txt rules, firewalls, rate limits, authentication, noindex directives, JavaScript rendering or DNS failures. A failed crawl does not by itself prove an SEO defect.
A practical free SEO stack for 2026
- Connect Google Search Console for first-party Google search performance.
- Use Google Analytics for behavior and conversion measurement.
- Add the site to Ahrefs Free for recurring links, audits and site-level metrics.
- Use Semrush Free Tools for occasional competitor, keyword, SERP and AI-visibility checks.
- Add a specialist crawler or performance tool when a technical question exceeds either platform’s free crawl allowance.
When paying becomes reasonable
Consider an upgrade when daily limits interrupt normal research, more than a handful of keywords need monitoring, several sites or clients must be managed, or you need exports, historical data, scheduled reporting, API access or white-labeling. A larger site may also outgrow the free audit allowance.

The US-facing SEO pricing page checked for this comparison listed Pro at $139 per month, Guru at $249 and Business at $499. Displayed annual-billing equivalents were approximately $117.33, $208.33 and $416.66 per month. The same page listed 5, 15 and 40 websites respectively, with 500, 1,500 and 5,000 tracked keywords. Ahrefs paid signals
Ahrefs’ June 2026 help comparison listed Starter at $29 per month and Lite at $129. Its separate pricing page showed Starter with 750 tracked keywords, weekly updates and 100,000 monthly Site Audit crawl credits, while Lite showed 2,000 tracked keywords and 500,000 crawl credits. - Own one site: start with Ahrefs Free plus Search Console and Analytics.
- Research competitors: start with Semrush Free Tools.
- Need both workflows: keep both free options; they solve different problems.
- Need scale: test the relevant paid trial or entry plan, then choose the platform that matches the work you perform most often.
