Seattle launched the Seattle Climate Innovation Hub (SCIH) in mid-January 2025 as a downtown public-private partnership for climate-tech companies. It connects founders with incubation, commercialization support, community, workspace, mentors and funding pathways—but it is not a single city agency, a universal grant program or a guarantee of investment. The clearest structured route for an early-stage company is the CoMotion Labs Climate Tech Incubator.
What Seattle created
SCIH is a shared downtown location and network intended to help climate-focused entrepreneurs move technologies toward commercialization. The City’s announcement framed it as part of both its green-economy strategy and downtown revitalization effort. The mayor’s release is dated January 16, 2025, while CoMotion’s announcement says January 15; “mid-January 2025” captures the launch timing without implying the sources use the same date. The hub is listed at 1215 4th Avenue, 15th Floor, Seattle, WA 98101. Seattle’s launch announcement and CoMotion’s announcement describe the partnership and its purpose.
It is better understood as a coordinated ecosystem than as one all-purpose institution: partners have distinct services, eligibility rules and ways to participate.
Who runs it and what each partner contributes
| Partner | Role in the ecosystem |
|---|---|
| Seattle Office of Economic Development (OED) | Public-sector economic-development partner and initial funder of the hub. |
| UW CoMotion Labs | Climate-tech incubation, commercialization curriculum, mentoring and connections to the University of Washington innovation ecosystem. |
| 9Zero | Climate-focused community, events, networking, digital tools, member directory, coworking and private-office options. |
| VertueLab | Nonprofit climate-tech funder and accelerator offering funding pathways, technical support and ecosystem programs. |
The CoMotion hub overview, 9Zero’s community page and VertueLab’s SCIH page describe these complementary roles. UW’s Mobility Innovation Center and Alaska Airlines appear as partners in CoMotion’s current program brochure; that identifies them as program partners, not necessarily as founding operators. What founders can get through the incubator
Structured commercialization support
The current CoMotion Labs Climate Tech Incubator page describes a six-month, cohort-based program for pre-seed and seed-stage startups. It combines commercialization curriculum, entrepreneurial training and mentorship with connections intended to help companies prepare for funding, partnerships, pilots, sales, manufacturing and scaling. The launch-era announcement described the inaugural program as eight months; the current six-month description is the relevant one for founders considering the program now. See the current incubator details and application information.
Community, research and partner connections
SCIH brings together access to a climate-focused founder and professional network, investor and funder connections, events, and UW research and commercialization relationships. 9Zero offers its own community groups, digital platform and directory, while VertueLab describes funding and technical-support pathways. Those offerings are separate partner routes, not automatic benefits attached to admission to the incubator.

What the funding figures mean
For the launch, Seattle OED committed $200,000 and the Washington Department of Commerce contributed $85,000. These are initial hub-support amounts reported in the City’s launch announcement; they are not a stated permanent operating budget or a pool promised to participating startups. VertueLab’s role as a funder does not mean that every SCIH company receives funding.
Who should apply to the current CoMotion incubator?
CoMotion’s current program description says it looks for companies that meet these practical requirements:
Rank #3
- STATIC ELECTRICITY & LIGHTNING FORMATION: Discover the power of static electricity by making hair stand on end and bending water with a charged balloon. Simulate lightning just like in real storm clouds.
- CLOUD FORMATION & EVAPORATION SCIENCE: Use an air pump to create instant clouds in your palm and watch them disappear as they "evaporate." This activity demonstrates the processes of condensation and evaporation.
- GREENHOUSE EFFECT: Trap heat using CO2 produced from baking soda and vinegar in this hands-on demo of the greenhouse effect. See firsthand how global warming works and understand its impact on Earth's climate.
- WATER CYCLE & ECOSYSTEM IN ACTION: Build a desktop water cycle model featuring a cloud-covered mountain. Watch as rain forms and grows a bean plant in a self-contained ecosystem—a practical demonstration of the water cycle.
- WIND CONVECTION: Conduct eco-experiments like testing the harmful effects of acid rain on plants using vinegar. Explore wind convection by observing warm air rise and spin a paper spiral, simulating real wind patterns.
- They are at the pre-seed to seed stage.
- They have a business license.
- They have a minimum viable product ready for commercialization.
- They can attend downtown events and curriculum sessions approximately two to three times per month.
- They can commit roughly 20 hours per month to cross-functional operations and commercial-innovation programming.
The program is not primarily designed for idea-stage founders, though CoMotion says promising applied-research applications may be considered. CoMotion and VertueLab describe CoMotion support as not taking equity or intellectual property; founders should confirm the terms in the specific program agreement rather than assume every service has identical terms.
What counts as climate tech for this program?
The current incubator spans more than energy generation or electric vehicles. Its listed areas include:

What the first cohort shows—and does not show
CoMotion announced six startups in its inaugural cohort in June 2025, selected from more than 30 applicants. The companies worked across areas including biomaterials, AI for infrastructure project management, electric vehicles and aircraft, and product circularity. The original schedule placed that cohort from July 2025 through February 2026. CoMotion’s inaugural-cohort announcement.

- For a commercialization-ready startup: Review the CoMotion Climate Tech Incubator requirements and application information. Prepare to show the business license, MVP, commercialization milestone, climate rationale and ability to attend in person.
- For ongoing networking or workspace: Explore 9Zero’s community and its membership signup. Membership tiers, coworking and private-office details depend on the option and fit; standard public pricing is not stated on the cited pages.
- For funding pathways or technical assistance: Contact VertueLab through its SCIH page to identify relevant funding, accelerator or support programs. The page does not establish automatic funding for hub participants.
- For a visit or event: Check with the relevant partner before going. VertueLab lists the SCIH location as by appointment only, so it should not be treated as an unrestricted public drop-in site.
- For a UW research or commercialization connection: Start with CoMotion’s hub overview and ask which UW or partner pathway fits the technology and its development stage.
The hub’s listed address is 1215 4th Avenue, 15th Floor, Seattle, WA 98101. Seattle’s wider green-economy page also lists related local grants, incentives and accelerator resources beyond SCIH: Seattle green-economy programs.
What the hub does not promise
- Guaranteed investment or grants: The available program descriptions do not say that every participant receives capital.
- Guaranteed pilots, customers or city contracts: The program supports preparation and connections, not a stated commitment from a buyer or public agency.
- Free, permanent office space: Workspace options are associated with partner offerings and membership details; the sources do not promise free space to every incubator company.
- One application for every partner service: CoMotion, 9Zero and VertueLab have distinct programs and participation routes.
- Full production facilities: The available descriptions establish commercialization support and connections, not an on-site manufacturing line or extensive hardware production capacity.
- Verified climate results: A company’s participation does not itself demonstrate emissions reductions or other measured environmental outcomes.
How to judge whether it is a meaningful resource
For a founder, SCIH’s practical value depends on whether its mix of structured programming and partner introductions helps move a product toward customers, pilots, capital or manufacturing. It is a stronger fit for a licensed, pre-seed or seed company with a commercialization-ready MVP and enough time for recurring in-person participation than for an idea-stage founder, a remote-only team or a company seeking immediate large-scale capital.
For Seattle, the launch supports a goal of connecting the city’s research, business and climate communities while bringing activity downtown. The official material establishes the hub, its programs and early cohort participation, but does not provide a complete independent impact evaluation of jobs created, investment raised, pilots launched or climate outcomes. Those are the kinds of results that would show whether the coordination effort is translating into durable economic and environmental benefits.
