This is a 2025 buying-guide archive. Prices and promotions below are historical signals, not current August 2026 offers. The right deal depends on where you buy books, whether you borrow from a library, and which features you will actually use—not on the biggest percentage discount.
For most Amazon households, the 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite was the safest all-purpose choice. Kobo offered better value for EPUB collections, supported-library borrowing, and affordable color models. BOOX made sense only for readers willing to trade simplicity for Android app flexibility.
Quick verdict: which 2025 deal fit your reading?
| Reader profile | Best direction | Why | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mostly novels, Amazon purchases | Kindle Paperwhite (12th generation) | 7-inch display, warm light, IPX8 water resistance, USB-C and up to 12 weeks of manufacturer-claimed battery life. | Amazon Kindle Paperwhite |
| Lowest sensible black-and-white cost | Kobo Clara BW | Compact, waterproof, warm-light-equipped and suited to EPUB and supported library workflows. | Kobo Clara BW |
| Affordable color | Kobo Clara Colour | Compact color E Ink at a historically reported U.S. price of about $149.99–$159.99; verify the exact configuration before buying. | Kobo Clara Colour |
| Color plus physical buttons | Kobo Libra Colour | 7-inch color display, page-turn buttons, waterproofing and Kobo Stylus compatibility; 2025 coverage commonly placed it around $219.99–$229.99. | Kobo Libra Colour |
| Amazon color ecosystem | Kindle Colorsoft | Amazon’s first color Kindle; its roughly $249–$280 historical range made it worthwhile mainly when heavily discounted or when Amazon integration mattered. | Amazon Kindle Colorsoft |
| Handwriting and large documents | Kindle Scribe, Kobo Elipsa-class device or BOOX Note-class device | These are writing tablets, not simply premium novel readers. Include the pen and case in the real cost. | Kindle Scribe |
| Multiple bookstores, apps or complex PDFs | BOOX | Android supports more services than Kindle or Kobo, but setup, refresh modes and notifications require more management. | BOOX official store |
Historical 2025 comparisons commonly put the standard 16GB Paperwhite near $159–$160. Those figures identify the market position at the time; they are not a current price promise.
What makes an eReader deal genuinely good?
A discount is only real value after you identify the exact generation and checkout configuration. Compare the advertised price with the model’s normal list price, then check:

- Condition and age: Is it current, refurbished, discontinued or old stock? An older bargain can have a worn battery, obsolete charging port or limited software support.
- Ad status: Some cheaper Kindles include lock-screen advertisements. Confirm whether removing them costs extra.
- Included items: A case, stylus, charging dock, warranty extension or children’s subscription may be absent or temporary.
- Storage: 8GB is generally enough for novels; 16GB is the practical default; 32GB or more helps with manga, comics, audiobooks, PDFs and notes. Amazon lists approximately 11.5GB usable on the 16GB Paperwhite and approximately 25GB on the 32GB Signature Edition.
- Missing hardware: The cheaper model may lack waterproofing, warm light, page-turn buttons or a higher-quality display.
- Total ownership: Add books, subscriptions, accessories, shipping, taxes and likely replacement cost. A free trial is not permanent value.
- Protection: Verify the retailer’s return window and warranty, especially for refurbished stock.
Beware a “sale” that follows a temporary price increase or merely returns a product to its usual street price. Record the date, retailer, storage, ad status, bundle contents and expiration date whenever you compare offers.
Best deals by reader type
Best overall Kindle: Kindle Paperwhite, 12th generation
Released in 2024, the 12th-generation Paperwhite remained the balanced Kindle choice through 2025. Amazon lists a 7-inch display, adjustable warm light, dark mode, USB-C, IPX8 water resistance and up to 12 weeks of claimed battery life. The standard model has 16GB; the Signature Edition has 32GB, wireless-charging compatibility and an auto-adjusting front light. IPX8 is a rating for water resistance, not a guarantee against every liquid, drop or repair scenario. Source: Amazon device information.
Choose it when your books are mainly Kindle purchases, you already use Kindle apps, or you want the least disruptive Amazon experience. Do not pay the Paperwhite premium for color or handwriting you will not use.

Best black-and-white value: Kobo Clara BW
The Clara BW is the better value when novels are the priority and you want a compact waterproof reader with ComfortLight PRO and dark mode. Kobo’s EPUB-oriented workflow and native library borrowing in supported markets can be more important than a small hardware discount. Product details are at Kobo’s Clara BW page.

Best budget color: Kobo Clara Colour
Clara Colour was the lower-cost route to color E Ink, with 2025 U.S. coverage commonly reporting a mid-$100 price. Color helps with covers, comics, maps, diagrams, recipes, children’s books and highlighted passages. It does not look like an LCD tablet: color E Ink is muted and can appear less paper-like or lower-contrast than black-and-white E Ink, particularly indoors or in dim light. See the official product page and Tom’s Guide review.
Best color reader with buttons: Kobo Libra Colour
Libra Colour adds a 7-inch color screen, physical page-turn buttons, waterproofing, dark mode and Kobo Stylus compatibility. Buttons are useful one-handed or in bed; the stylus and case can materially raise the checkout total. Use Kobo’s comparison page to confirm the current bundle and specifications.

When Kindle Colorsoft is worth considering
Colorsoft suits an Amazon household that specifically wants a color Kindle, but its launch price was $279.99 and 2025 coverage generally placed configurations around $249–$280. That premium is difficult to justify for ordinary novels. Amazon’s device details are at this support page; historical context appears in Wired’s color-reader coverage.
Writing devices are a different purchase
Kindle Scribe, Kobo Elipsa-class products and BOOX Note-class devices are justified by handwriting, annotation or large documents. They are heavier, costlier and less pocketable than a novel reader. Buy one only if writing is a central requirement, and price the pen, cover and replacement accessories separately.
BOOX for apps and PDFs
BOOX can run multiple reading apps, web services and bookstores through Android. That flexibility helps with Kindle, Kobo, Libby, Google Play Books and varied PDF workflows, but app compatibility, notification control, refresh modes and firmware behavior demand more setup. Start at the official BOOX store and verify the exact model and generation; third-party 2026 prices are not verified 2025 deal data.

Kindle versus Kobo: the ecosystem usually decides
| Question | Kindle | Kobo |
|---|---|---|
| Best for purchased books | Amazon’s store, mature syncing and Kindle apps. | Kobo store, with a better fit for readers managing independent EPUB collections. |
| Library borrowing | Availability varies by market and service. | Native OverDrive/Libby integration is a major advantage in supported countries and participating systems. |
| File flexibility | Convenient inside Amazon; DRM-protected purchases remain tied to that ecosystem. | More comfortable for EPUB ownership and sideloading, but DRM, conversion and metadata can still matter. |
| Subscriptions | Kindle Unlimited is optional; Amazon says Prime is not required, and eligibility is title-specific. | Do not assume a Kobo subscription includes every store title. |
| Switching cost | Purchased Kindle books do not automatically become Kobo books. | Purchased Kobo books do not automatically become Kindle books. |
Kindle Unlimited is not an all-you-can-read replacement for every Kindle title. Check whether your preferred books are eligible before treating the subscription as savings; see Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited policy.
“Open EPUB support” also does not mean every EPUB, PDF or DRM-protected file will open without conversion or authorization. Library lending depends on country, library system, account setup and publisher licensing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Black-and-white or color E Ink?
Choose black-and-white when
- You primarily read novels and want maximum text contrast for the money.
- You do not need colored diagrams, comics or highlighted content.
- You prefer a lower price and potentially longer practical battery life.
Choose color when
- You regularly read comics, manga covers, cookbooks, maps, recipes, children’s books or illustrated nonfiction.
- Muted color is useful enough to justify a higher price and potentially more front-light use.
Color E Ink is reflective, low-power reading technology, not an iPad or OLED replacement. Kobo identifies color, waterproofing, dark mode, buttons and stylus support by model in its color range and comparison chart.

Specifications that actually matter
Screen size and ergonomics
Six-inch readers are easiest to carry. Seven-inch screens provide a more comfortable page layout without becoming large. PDFs, sheet music and technical documents usually need a larger device; a small reader may require constant zooming and panning.
Lighting and comfort
Adjustable warm light matters more for many night readers than maximum brightness. Dark mode is a preference, not an automatic eye-comfort improvement. Ambient light, text size, contrast and personal tolerance matter more than a single mode label. Flush glass can look premium but may reflect more than a recessed plastic screen.
Water resistance
IPX8 is useful at a bath, beach or poolside, but saltwater, chlorinated water, impact and charging-port misuse can still cause damage.
Battery and charging
Compare manufacturer battery claims only under similar assumptions. Brightness, wireless radios, Bluetooth, audiobooks and reading frequency change results. USB-C is now a practical convenience when your other devices use the same cable.
Software longevity and repair
Check update support before buying old stock. Amazon’s update page listed firmware version 5.19.5 for the Colorsoft and 12th-generation Paperwhite when crawled; software versions change, so verify Amazon’s current update page. Kobo says several recent models, including Clara BW, Clara Colour and Libra Colour, contain repairable components such as the display, battery, motherboard and covers; treat that as Kobo’s stated repairability information, not a durability guarantee. How to recognize a real eReader deal
- Identify the exact model, generation, storage capacity and color.
- Compare the offer with the normal list price, not an inflated temporary reference price.
- Confirm whether advertisements are enabled and what removing them costs.
- Add the case, stylus, dock, subscription and shipping you actually need.
- Check official software support, battery condition for used units, charging-port type and replacement availability.
- Verify library compatibility, supported file formats and DRM requirements for your country.
- Read the return policy and warranty terms; favor the manufacturer or an authorized retailer for refurbished hardware.
- Record the observation date and sale expiration because prices change.
When to buy and when to wait
Prime Day, Black Friday, back-to-school promotions and holiday sales have historically produced important eReader discounts, but no retailer is guaranteed to discount a particular model on a particular date. If the discount is small and your current device works, waiting for a major retail event can be sensible. Waiting can backfire when a model is discontinued or stock is limited, so check support status and replacement availability first.
