That was a forward-looking development target—not proof that 280 stores had opened. As of August 18, 2026, the public materials reviewed do not independently verify whether the target was met, revised, or abandoned.
The opportunity is substantial but capital-intensive. Sandbox VR reported strong company-store revenue and rapid franchise interest, while its current franchise site requires at least $1 million in liquid assets and $2 million in net worth. It does not publicly state the franchise fee, total opening cost, royalties, or expected payback period.
What Sandbox VR announced in 2024
In coverage published September 3, 2024, Sandbox VR said franchise deals had grown 60% year over year in the second quarter and that it planned to open 280 new franchise locations during the following four years. The announcement followed the opening of its 50th store on August 15, 2024, on Australia’s Gold Coast—the company’s first Australian location.
Sandbox VR said the Gold Coast opening brought its footprint to four continents and nine countries. It had opened U.S. franchise territories in April 2024 and said 33% of available U.S. territories had been claimed within four months. Those figures were company-reported and describe interest or territory allocation, not operating-store performance.

The announcement did not specify the geographic split of the 280 planned units, an opening schedule, expected cancellations, or how many signed agreements would become operating stores. It also did not clearly establish whether the 280 units were incremental to the 50 stores then open or part of a broader network objective.

What “280 locations” does—and does not—mean
The number is best read as a four-year franchise-development ambition. It is not a verified current store count, a guarantee of openings, or evidence that all locations had reached construction or launch.
- Open stores: locations operating and accepting customers.
- Signed agreements: franchise contracts that may still require financing, a lease, permitting, construction, and training.
- Claimed territories: areas reserved or selected for development, which may never produce a store.
- Pipeline locations: sites under evaluation or construction.
The 2024 announcement did not separate those categories. As of August 18, 2026, the public sources reviewed still do not provide a dated, independently verifiable progress report against the 280-unit target. The official franchise site continues to solicit franchise and real-estate inquiries but does not publish a clear total tied to that forecast.

The $1.9 million figure cannot be converted into an expected franchise profit. The public announcement does not provide rent, labor, build-out, hardware depreciation, royalties, advertising contributions, maintenance, financing, taxes, cash flow, or store-level EBITDA. It is also an average, not a median or guaranteed result for a new location.
Why Sandbox VR is using franchising
Franchising can let Sandbox VR expand across countries without funding every lease, build-out, payroll, and local marketing campaign itself. Local operators can contribute real-estate knowledge, hiring networks, event relationships, and market-specific operating experience.
A larger network could also improve brand visibility and spread the cost of developing new experiences across more venues. The trade-off is that the operator assumes much of the site, staffing, occupancy, financing, and local-demand risk. Rapid expansion can create inconsistent guest service, uneven equipment maintenance, weaker local marketing, and disputes over territories or standards.
What customers are buying
Sandbox VR is a staffed, group entertainment venue rather than a home-headset product. Its format combines full-body motion capture, haptic feedback, and virtual environments in which players’ bodies act as controllers. Experiences are designed for groups of up to six people.
At the time of the 2024 announcement, Sandbox VR said its internal studios in Hong Kong and Vancouver had developed eight experiences. Its current franchise materials also promote licensed and branded content, including experiences associated with Netflix and Paramount intellectual property. The older statement about eight internally developed experiences should not be treated as a complete description of the 2026 catalog.

What the franchisor says it provides
The current franchise site presents a turnkey support model. Sandbox VR says it can assist with:
- Site selection, design, and construction
- Technology deployment and localized-language options
- Marketing and launch planning
- Training and post-launch support
- Proprietary technology and branded content
- Potential multi-unit development packages
These are franchisor-provided claims. A prospective operator should verify each obligation, service level, fee, and exception in the current Franchise Disclosure Document, franchise agreement, technical specifications, and operating manuals.

Capital and qualification requirements
The current franchise page states that applicants should have at least $1 million in liquid assets and $2 million in net worth. Those are qualification thresholds, not the total cost of opening a store.
The public page does not state the franchise fee, total initial investment, royalty rate, advertising contribution, required working capital, equipment cost, or expected payback period. A serious applicant should request those figures before signing a lease or presenting the concept to lenders.
Published application and launch sequence
- Submit an information request.
- Meet the franchise team by video call.
- Review the Franchise Disclosure Document.
- Attend Discovery Day.
- Meet the executive team.
- Sign the franchise agreement.
- Develop a launch-marketing package.
- Complete training.
- Fit out and launch the store.
Real-estate requirements
The official site describes a four-holodeck store of approximately 4,000 to 5,500 square feet. It prefers clear ceiling height of at least 11 feet, while stating that 9 feet may be workable under certain conditions. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems must be installed above 9 feet.

Interior-center locations may require dedicated HVAC and an after-hours entrance. Sandbox VR says it prefers mixed-use entertainment centers, lifestyle districts, urban streets, regional malls, and destinations near restaurants, bars, theaters, escape rooms, tourist attractions, convention centers, or office populations.
That creates a direct trade-off: high-traffic entertainment districts can support group bookings but may bring higher rent, tenant-improvement costs, and occupancy risk. Before committing, an operator should confirm electrical capacity, cooling performance, sound isolation, parking, accessibility, permitting, and whether weekday traffic is strong enough to fill sessions.

United Kingdom and Ireland
Sandbox VR’s franchise partner VR Entertainment Group reportedly opened its first London store in July 2022 and a second location in Birmingham about a year later. The partner and company said the group surpassed $10 million in revenue, London guests were up 16.8% year to date, and London revenue was projected to exceed $5 million in 2024.
Those figures were supplied by the company or franchisee, not presented as audited financial statements. London is also a major tourism and entertainment market, so the results may not represent an ordinary territory.
Australia
The Gold Coast venue was operated by franchise partners Bao Phung and Keith Le. The franchisee described the market as attracting 13 million visitors annually. That tourism figure is an attributed statement, not an independently verified demand forecast or a guarantee of store sales.

Risks behind an aggressive rollout
Construction and capital risk
Opening 280 units would require sustained franchise recruitment, financing, leases, permitting, construction, equipment deployment, training, and technical support. The announcement did not disclose the development staff or infrastructure supporting that pace. Operators should budget for overruns, delayed openings, lease deposits, pre-opening payroll, insurance, and working capital.
Utilization risk
The format depends on groups, weekends, evenings, corporate events, birthdays, tourist traffic, and efficient session turnover. A strong ticket price does not ensure attractive returns if holodecks sit idle on weekdays or if cancellations and downtime reduce capacity.
Technology and maintenance risk
Ask who owns and services headsets, trackers, haptic equipment, computers, and networking hardware; what replacement cycle applies; whether support is included in royalties; how quickly an offline holodeck is repaired; and whether software updates or internet redundancy are mandatory.
Content and licensing risk
Proprietary and licensed experiences can drive visits, but rights may expire, release schedules can slip, and audiences can tire of a limited catalog. Confirm the content roadmap, licensing terms, required updates, and what happens if a prominent title is withdrawn.
Franchise-system risk
Successful London and Gold Coast examples do not reveal the performance of weaker, delayed, transferred, or closed stores. A prospective franchisee should ask for closure data, transfer history, underperforming-unit information, territory protections, and customer-satisfaction results across comparable markets.
Due diligence checklist for a prospective franchisee
Request complete unit economics
- Median and mature-store gross sales, not only an average
- Store-level EBITDA and cash flow
- Labor, rent, occupancy, maintenance, insurance, and royalty percentages
- Revenue per holodeck and utilization by daypart
- Average ticket price, group size, repeat visits, events, merchandise, and other revenue
- Ramp time to break-even and the full distribution of openings, closures, and transfers
Test the territory
- How exclusivity is defined and whether corporate stores can open nearby
- Whether multiple franchisees can compete in one metropolitan area
- How online bookings, national accounts, and marketing leads are allocated
- Whether protection survives a delayed opening
- Whether the territory is based on population, radius, ZIP codes, or another formula
Stress-test the site
- Verify ceiling height, MEP capacity, HVAC, sound control, parking, access, and permits.
- Model weekday, seasonal, tourist, and event demand separately.
- Price rent, tenant improvements, utilities, repairs, and insurance before relying on headline revenue.
What can responsibly be said in 2026?
The 280-location number remains a historical expansion forecast from September 2024. The public materials reviewed as of August 18, 2026 do not establish whether Sandbox VR achieved it. The official franchise site continues to market opportunities and support services, but it does not publish a dated store count or a verified progress report.
The next decisive evidence would be an updated operating-store list, a construction and opening pipeline, the current Franchise Disclosure Document, and franchisee financial disclosures that show costs and earnings rather than revenue alone.
