Samsung’s second-quarter 2025 results did not show that extended reality (XR) had become a meaningful business. They showed that Samsung had formally put XR into its second-half product plans. The later Galaxy XR launch confirmed that the company could bring a device to market, but neither the earnings release nor the launch establishes broad adoption or a significant financial contribution.
What Samsung reported in Q2 2025
Samsung Electronics announced results for the quarter ended June 30 on July 31, 2025. Consolidated revenue was KRW 74.6 trillion and operating profit was KRW 4.7 trillion. Revenue was lower than the KRW 79.14 trillion reported in Q1 2025 but broadly flat against KRW 74.07 trillion in Q2 2024. Operating profit fell from KRW 6.69 trillion sequentially and was about 55% below Q2 2024’s KRW 10.44 trillion. Samsung’s results release and its Q2 earnings guidance provide the comparisons.
Stable year-over-year revenue alongside sharply lower profit means Samsung was still selling at a similar overall scale, but earning less from those sales. The company cited semiconductor pressures, including memory inventory adjustments and costs related to export restrictions affecting China. The quarter was mixed, not a broad-based earnings breakthrough.
Mobile was stronger than the company-wide profit picture
Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) and Networks businesses recorded KRW 29.2 trillion in revenue and KRW 3.1 trillion in operating profit. Samsung attributed year-over-year improvement to Galaxy S25 and A-series phones and tablet sales, as well as resource management. Smartphone shipments declined sequentially after Q1’s benefit from new flagship launches. These figures cover a broad portfolio; they are not XR revenue or profit.

What the Q2 report actually said about XR
Samsung placed XR in its second-half outlook. It said it planned to strengthen AI capabilities across tablets and wearables and expand the Galaxy ecosystem with new form factors, including XR products and TriFold devices. Its earnings-call script also referred to an XR headset planned for 2025 and connected the effort to Samsung’s work with Google and Qualcomm. The earnings-call script gives that additional context.
The results release did not announce a finished headset, a product name, a price, shipment targets, or a separate XR financial line. As of July 31, XR was a roadmap commitment—not evidence that XR had driven Q2 sales or that Samsung had created a profitable new division.

Why Project Moohan mattered beyond one headset
Project Moohan was the codename for Samsung’s first headset built for Android XR. The strategic idea was a shared platform rather than a standalone Samsung device: Samsung would develop hardware, Google would provide Android XR and Gemini-powered software, and Qualcomm would supply the Snapdragon XR hardware platform. Samsung described the partnership in its XR and Galaxy AI announcement.
That division of work could help Samsung extend its Galaxy ecosystem into spatial computing while giving Google a route to bring Android services and developers into headsets and, potentially, glasses. It also makes the effort dependent on more than Samsung’s hardware: the platform needs useful software, developers, content and sustained support from its partners. Android app availability by itself does not mean every app is designed for spatial use.

From Project Moohan to Galaxy XR
Samsung unveiled Galaxy XR in the United States on October 21, 2025; its Korean announcement followed on October 22. The US launch price was $1,799.99. Samsung presented it as an XR device blending immersive digital environments with camera views of the physical world, rather than as a conventional gaming-only VR headset. It runs Android XR with Gemini integrated into the experience and supports voice, vision and gesture-based interaction. Samsung’s US announcement describes the launch, while Google’s overview covers the platform and apps.
Samsung’s global announcement gives approximately 2.5 hours of battery usage time and warns that features and app availability vary by country and language. That is a manufacturer-stated figure, not an independent battery test. Later Samsung business-report material lists a weight of 545 grams, 4K micro-OLED displays, a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, Android 14 and One UI XR. Those later specifications document the product as it developed; they were not details contained in the July earnings release. Google has highlighted experiences and services including YouTube, Google Photos, Google TV and Google Maps, along with selected third-party experiences. That signals an ecosystem taking shape, but the number of named services is not the same as a mature library of XR-native apps. Google’s Android XR page describes a broader roadmap spanning headsets and glasses; future devices are a roadmap, not a guarantee of launch dates or sales.

The upside: a platform, not just a product
- Shared capabilities: Samsung’s device experience, Google’s services and Gemini, and Qualcomm’s XR silicon combine complementary roles.
- A wider Galaxy ecosystem: XR could become another way to use Samsung and Google services alongside phones, tablets and wearables.
- Room to expand: Android XR is intended to extend beyond a single headset form factor. More devices could give developers a larger potential audience, if they arrive and attract users.
The constraints: price, endurance and adoption
- Premium entry price: At $1,799.99 in the US at launch, Galaxy XR is a high-end purchase, not a mainstream VR value option.
- Limited unplugged use: Samsung’s approximate 2.5-hour battery claim is a meaningful constraint for extended sessions.
- Early-platform risk: A new platform needs compelling applications and repeat use, not just compatible hardware and familiar Android services.
- Unproven commercial scale: The cited official materials do not establish Galaxy XR sales, market share, profitability, or consumer adoption.
- Usefulness must be demonstrated: Gemini and multimodal interaction are platform features; their everyday value depends on accurate, responsive experiences and apps that make sense in XR.
Samsung positioned Galaxy XR as a premium showcase for Android XR and AI, but launch specifications and demonstrations cannot settle questions of comfort, sustained use, or whether customers will return to it regularly. Nor does a plan for future glasses establish a launch date or guarantee that such products will ship.

Was Q2 2025 the start of a new XR era?
In strategic terms, yes: Samsung moved XR from a general future possibility into its official second-half roadmap, and Project Moohan became the Galaxy XR product. In financial terms, no: Q2 results did not show XR contributing materially to revenue or profit. The quarter’s XR significance was the signal of commitment; the October launch showed execution. Whether that becomes a durable business depends on follow-on devices, useful software, customer adoption and economics that the cited announcements do not yet establish.
