The Galaxy S24 Ultra launch deal advertised up to $870 in savings, but it was not a universal $870 price cut: the maximum depended on a qualifying trade-in and the seller’s offer. It ran during the U.S. pre-order window of January 17–30, 2024, and has expired. The phone launched at $1,299.99, so the often-implied $429.99 price was only a before-tax illustration for someone who qualified for the full advertised saving—not a price every buyer could get.
What the $870 headline meant
The Galaxy S24 Ultra started at $1,299.99 in the U.S. at launch, according to Samsung’s January 2024 announcement. Contemporary deal coverage described savings of up to $870 with a qualifying trade-in, including an offer on unlocked models reported by MacRumors. That maximum was conditional, and the reported Best Buy offer should not be treated as identical to Samsung.com’s package.
| Deal component | What it meant | Cash price reduction? |
|---|---|---|
| Trade-in credit | Value assigned to an eligible old device; the buyer gives up that device and must meet the seller’s conditions. | Often applied as purchase credit, subject to eligibility and inspection. |
| Retailer or Samsung promotion | An additional incentive that could differ by seller and offer. | Depends on the offer; some value may be restricted. |
| Storage upgrade | Samsung offered 512GB for the 256GB price, or 1TB for the 512GB price, during the qualifying pre-order period. | No. It provides more capacity, not cash back. |
| Accessory or store credit | Contemporary coverage reported a $150 Samsung credit as part of the launch package; that figure is reported by Droid Life. | No, unless spent on eligible items; the recovered official terms do not establish universal cash value. |
Trade-in value is not the same as a discount for owning no other phone. To judge the deal fairly, subtract the old device’s realistic resale or replacement value from the credit offered for it. A large trade-in number can be less attractive if the phone could be sold privately for a similar amount or if surrendering it means buying a replacement.
Where the offer applied—and when
Samsung’s U.S. pre-orders began January 17, 2024. Its storage-upgrade promotion ran through January 30, subject to eligibility and availability; broad U.S. availability began January 31, according to Samsung’s availability announcement. Samsung’s promotion FAQ says retailer and participating-carrier offers could vary by location. The pre-order promotion is not active in August 2026; Samsung’s current phone offers page features newer models.

- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
- Samsung.com and Shop Samsung: Samsung’s official package included the specified storage upgrade and Samsung-specific benefits. The exact combination depended on eligibility and availability.
- Best Buy: Contemporary reporting documented up to $870 off unlocked S24 Ultra models with a qualifying trade-in. Retailer incentives could be separate from Samsung’s own benefits.
- Carriers: Carrier offers could advertise large savings as monthly bill credits, potentially with plan, activation, financing, or upgrade conditions. Those are not equivalent to an immediate unlocked-phone discount.
How to work out the real cost
Use the full transaction, not the headline, to compare offers:
Real cost = phone price − instant promotional discount − eligible trade-in credit − usable accessory or store credit + sales tax + activation or upgrade fees + financing cost − the value you personally assign to the storage upgrade.

- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
For the maximum headline example, $1,299.99 − $870 = $429.99 before tax and fees. That arithmetic assumes the buyer qualified for the full $870. It does not mean the phone was available to everyone for $429.99: the old device has economic value, accessory credit may not reduce the phone checkout total, and taxes, fees, and financing are separate.
- No trade-in: Do not subtract the maximum trade-in-dependent saving. Start with the applicable price and only count incentives for which you qualify.
- Low-value trade-in: Use the actual quote for that device and condition, then compare it with the device’s realistic private-sale value and the effort or risk of selling it yourself.
- Carrier offer: Add up the bill credits you can reasonably expect to receive, then account for the qualifying plan, line or upgrade requirements, installment period, and any credits lost if you leave early.
- Storage or accessory benefit: Count it only at the value it has to you. A 1TB upgrade has little practical value to someone who would have bought 512GB, and restricted accessory credit is not equivalent to cash.
What the Galaxy S24 Ultra included
The launch model paired its price with a 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, titanium frame, integrated S Pen, and Galaxy AI launch features. U.S. storage options were 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Those specifications help explain who might value the storage upgrade, but they do not make its value interchangeable with a cash discount.

Trade-in conditions and the risk of a revised credit
Samsung’s S24 buying guide lists eligibility checks including that the old device powers on and holds a charge, has a functioning display, is not blacklisted, has no prohibited cracks or liquid damage unless a specific cracked-screen offer applies, and is owned rather than leased. Personal information must be removed and software locks disabled. See Samsung’s trade-in requirements before relying on a quoted amount.
Samsung’s current trade-in terms say the anticipated credit can be charged back if the device is not shipped within 15 days of receiving the qualifying purchase or fails inspection. That is a current program rule, not proof that every January 2024 transaction used identical terms; check the terms attached to the specific promotion. Keep the shipment receipt and remove personal data and account locks before sending a phone.

Samsung instant credit versus carrier bill credits
Samsung describes its instant trade-in discount and a carrier’s bill-credit program as different programs that generally cannot be combined. An instant credit reduces the purchase amount at checkout when eligible. Carrier credits are commonly spread across billing cycles and linked to an account or installment agreement. Before choosing a carrier deal, verify the qualifying plan, activation or upgrade requirement, installment term, when credits begin, and what happens if you cancel service or pay off the phone early. A headline such as “free” or “up to $1,000 off” does not by itself show the total cost or flexibility.
Check the return consequences before ordering
A return can be complicated if the old phone has already been shipped, the trade-in has been accepted, or promotional and accessory credits were part of a bundle. A carrier installment agreement may also continue after a device return. Samsung says trade-ins are tied to qualifying purchases and that the applicable promotion terms govern canceled or returned orders. Read those terms before placing the order, especially when buying multiple products together.

Who would have benefited most?
- Stronger fit: A buyer with a recent, high-value eligible trade-in, a genuine need for more storage, and a preference for an unlocked phone without a long carrier-credit commitment.
- Weaker fit: A buyer whose old phone had little trade-in value, would need a replacement after trading it, preferred cash over storage or accessories, or could obtain a later unlocked discount without surrendering a device.
- Location caveat: Samsung’s storage-promotion FAQ excluded purchases through Samsung.com in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; local retailer or carrier participation could differ.
For any future offer, compare the written checkout price and trade-in quote with the phone’s resale value, tax and fees, and any required plan or financing. For a current Samsung deal, use Samsung’s offers page; for S24 Ultra inventory, inspect whether a listing is new, refurbished, or open-box and confirm carrier lock, warranty, and return terms. Current offers and stock can change, and the original $1,299.99 figure is the January 2024 launch price, not a verified 2026 selling price.
