Samsung’s “60% RAM Price Hike”: Will Your Next Smartphone Cost More?

Mobile memory prices are surging, but that does not mean your next phone will cost 60% more. Here is what the data means, which models are most exposed and how to buy wisely.

Yes, smartphone memory has become dramatically more expensive, but the evidence does not show that every Samsung phone—or any other phone—will suddenly cost 60% more. The reported increases apply to supplier prices for specific DRAM products such as mobile LPDDR4X and LPDDR5X. Manufacturers can respond with higher prices, less RAM or storage, fewer budget models, smaller discounts, or lower margins.

For buyers in late 2026 and early 2027, the practical risk is worse value rather than a guaranteed 60% jump in retail prices. A discounted current-generation phone may be a better deal than waiting for a new model with a higher price or leaner specification.

What the “60% RAM increase” actually describes

RAM in a phone is volatile working memory, normally supplied as low-power DRAM (LPDDR). It is different from NAND flash storage, which holds apps, photos and files at capacities such as 128GB or 256GB. HBM is another memory type, used mainly alongside AI accelerators and data-center hardware.

The often-repeated 50–60% figure refers to broader DRAM price forecasts for an earlier quarter, not a universal increase on every smartphone memory component. TrendForce’s mobile-memory estimate for the second quarter of 2026 was more specific:

Memory product Reported or forecast change What the number means
LPDDR4X 70–75% quarter over quarter TrendForce forecast for average mobile-DRAM selling prices in Q2 2026, not a phone retail price
LPDDR5X 78–83% quarter over quarter TrendForce forecast; it does not apply identically to every capacity, contract or supplier
Conventional DRAM 55–60% quarter over quarter An earlier, broader Q1 2026 category forecast, not necessarily smartphone LPDDR
Samsung LPDDR More than 20% was reportedly sought for Q3 2026 Industry reporting about a negotiation or target, not a public blanket Samsung announcement

See the TrendForce Q2 2026 mobile-DRAM analysis, its earlier DRAM outlook and the reported Q3 Samsung negotiations.

These are contract or average selling prices negotiated between chip suppliers and device makers. They are not the shelf price of a Galaxy phone. A supplier can raise a component quote without the handset maker passing through the full amount.

Why AI demand is squeezing phone memory

AI companies are buying large volumes of HBM and server DRAM. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron have finite wafer and packaging capacity, so production is being directed toward those higher-value products. That leaves less capacity for mobile LPDDR, while older mobile parts are also being phased down as manufacturers move toward newer generations.

TrendForce previously linked LPDDR4X pressure to production reductions and a supply gap during the transition toward LPDDR5X (its mobile-DRAM supply report). Samsung’s own first-quarter 2026 interim report highlights expansion of HBM4 and other AI-related memory products amid constrained supply. That confirms the strategic direction, but it does not establish a specific 60% increase for every phone customer.

Because the memory market is concentrated among a few suppliers, phone makers have less leverage when capacity tightens. Existing contracts and inventory can delay the effect, but they cannot remove it indefinitely.

Why a 60% chip increase does not make a phone 60% more expensive

IDC estimates that memory represents roughly 15–20% of the bill of materials for a mid-range phone and about 10–15% for a flagship (IDC’s market analysis). The bill of materials excludes or only partially captures costs such as software, assembly, logistics, marketing, retailer margins, carrier subsidies and taxes.

As an illustration—not a forecast—if memory were 20% of a phone’s component cost and its price rose 60%, the direct component-cost increase would be about 12% of the original component cost (20% × 60%). The final retail effect could be smaller or larger depending on margins, promotions, exchange rates, storage capacity and the other parts in the phone.

Which phones face the greatest pressure?

Budget and entry-level phones

Phones below about $400 are the most exposed. Their margins are thin, memory is a larger share of total component cost, and buyers are highly price-sensitive. A manufacturer may cut RAM or storage, use an older LPDDR generation, reduce camera or display specifications, cancel a configuration or discontinue a model rather than raise its price sharply. Analyst projections reported by Android Central point to a substantial contraction in this segment; that is a forecast, not a guaranteed result in every country.

Mid-range phones

Likely compromises include a return to 6GB RAM, 128GB as the default storage, higher launch prices, fewer 8GB or 12GB versions and shorter promotional periods. A phone can keep the same advertised price while quietly offering less memory, so compare the complete configuration rather than the model name.

Flagships and foldables

Premium phones have more margin and a higher price base, allowing companies to absorb part of the increase. They may nevertheless receive a $50–$100 launch-price increase, lose introductory discounts, or reserve higher RAM and storage for expensive tiers. Foldables and high-RAM gaming or AI phones use more memory per unit, so their component exposure can be greater even though their selling prices provide more room to absorb it.

Will Samsung Galaxy phones specifically get more expensive?

Samsung’s memory division benefits when chip prices rise, while its mobile division still pays for components used in Galaxy devices. Internal supply helps Samsung compete for allocation, but it does not make memory free or eliminate corporate transfer pricing and capacity constraints.

Samsung may pass through only part of the increase, protect a flagship price while cutting A-series volume, alter RAM and storage configurations, or accept lower margins. Omdia reported that Samsung held an estimated 22% global smartphone share in the second quarter of 2026 even as the overall market fell 4% year over year (Omdia). That suggests better supply access than many smaller brands, not a guarantee of cheaper phones.

For context, Samsung’s US March 2026 unlocked MSRP listed the Galaxy S26 at $799.99 for 128GB, $899.99 for 256GB and $1,099.99 for 512GB; the S26+ started at $1,099.99 and the S26 Ultra at $1,299.99 (Samsung’s MSRP sheet). Those are a baseline, not evidence of a future increase or proof that memory caused any existing price change. Samsung attributed the S26 and S26+ increase publicly to broader product improvements, rather than announcing a RAM surcharge (reported comments on the launch pricing).

How manufacturers can respond without a big headline price rise

  • Reduce RAM or internal storage in the base model.
  • Use LPDDR4X or another lower-cost part where the platform permits it.
  • Raise only the 256GB, 512GB or high-RAM tiers.
  • Offer fewer colors, configurations or low-margin models.
  • Shorten launch promotions or reduce accessory bundles.
  • Prioritize premium devices and cut entry-level production.
  • Sign longer contracts or stock components before a launch.
  • Accept lower margins temporarily and optimize software for lower memory capacities.

IDC expects the market to respond through higher average selling prices, fewer shipments and concentration in premium tiers. Its 2026 forecast called for a 13.9% year-over-year decline in global smartphone shipments and an average selling price of about $550 (IDC’s forecast). These are forecasts, not finalized annual results.

Should you buy a phone now?

Buy now when your current phone is failing

If the battery is unsafe, the phone is unreliable or security support is ending, buy a model that meets your needs today. Do not panic-buy solely because of a 60% headline.

Consider a discounted current-generation model

Existing inventory may have been purchased under earlier contracts. A discounted phone with 8GB RAM, adequate storage and a long support policy can offer better value than a new model that keeps its price by trimming specifications. Check warranty, remaining software support and regional compatibility.

Wait when you want one specific upcoming model

Waiting is reasonable if you can tolerate uncertainty and the new model’s camera, processor or support policy matters more than price. Set a maximum budget before launch and compare the complete configuration, not just the base MSRP.

Use promotions carefully

Samsung’s US store advertised up to $200 off selected Galaxy S26 Ultra purchases from July 6–19, 2026, subject to availability (Samsung’s smartphone storefront). Such offers are temporary and region-specific. Compare the unlocked price with the total cost of carrier installments, required plans and trade-in conditions. You can check Samsung’s current eligibility and terms at its trade-in page.

What to check at the next Galaxy launch

  1. Read the base RAM and storage, not only the model name.
  2. Check whether the LPDDR generation is disclosed and whether capacities vary by region.
  3. Compare unlocked MSRP with the launch promotion and the total carrier installment cost.
  4. Value trade-in credits only after checking device condition, lock status and required plan length.
  5. Confirm the promised software-support period and whether the processor has enough headroom for your intended five-year use.
  6. Compare the 256GB or higher tier: a base-model price increase may be hidden in storage upgrades.

What this means for other Android brands

Apple, Google, Motorola, Xiaomi and other vendors face the same memory market, although their contracts, inventory and product mixes differ. Large vendors may secure supply earlier, while smaller brands may pass through more cost, reduce model counts or delay launches. IDC’s market-share data and Omdia’s quarterly results show industry concentration can increase during a shortage, but they do not predict a specific price for any unannounced phone.

Storage is another variable. NAND flash is not RAM, yet a separate storage-price increase could make the 256GB and 512GB versions rise more than the base model. Regional taxes, tariffs, currency movements and carrier subsidies can easily outweigh the memory effect in a particular country.

The practical verdict

The memory shock is real: mobile LPDDR prices rose sharply in 2026 forecasts, and another Samsung increase was reportedly being pursued. That makes higher prices, leaner specifications and fewer affordable models plausible. It does not support saying that every next Galaxy—or every smartphone—will cost 60% more. Buy when you need a reliable phone, favor sufficient RAM, storage and software support, and judge any new launch by its complete value after promotions and trade-in credits.
