Samsung reportedly abandoned plans to use BOE OLED panels in the standard Galaxy S27 after internal opposition, but that does not mean Samsung Electronics has ended all business with the Chinese display maker. The reports concern one proposed smartphone-panel project; separate reporting points to continued or renewed cooperation on LCD panels for Samsung TVs.
What Samsung and BOE reportedly ended
Samsung Electronics was reportedly evaluating BOE as a possible OLED-panel supplier for the standard Galaxy S27, expected in the first half of 2027. ET News reported that Samsung sent BOE a request for information and that BOE began a dedicated development project for the phone’s panel. Reports published around June 29–30, 2026, said BOE had halted that work after negotiations collapsed. ET News and SamMobile describe the reported sourcing effort and its collapse.
That account supports a narrower description: a potential Galaxy S27 OLED arrangement and BOE’s reported development project did not proceed. It does not establish that Samsung Electronics issued a comprehensive termination of its commercial relationship with BOE, or that a binding mass-production contract had been signed and then canceled.
The model scope also matters. The strongest reporting specifically concerns the standard Galaxy S27. It does not establish that the S27+ or another higher-end model was part of the proposal. SamMobile’s earlier report likewise focused on the standard model.

Why Samsung considered BOE
A BOE option could have given Samsung Electronics’ mobile business another supplier to negotiate with, reduced its dependence on Samsung Display, and potentially lowered component costs. Those goals may have mattered amid wider cost pressure from components such as memory and application processors. The proposal would also have tested whether Samsung was willing to diversify display sourcing for a flagship Galaxy S phone.
One secondary report put BOE’s quoted panel price about $5 per unit below Samsung Display’s, but Samsung and BOE have not confirmed that figure. It should be treated as a reported estimate, not an official price or a guaranteed saving on a finished phone. Neowin reported the comparison.

Why the reported deal fell through
Coverage attributed the collapse to opposition within Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display. The reported tension reflects their different positions: Samsung Electronics makes Galaxy phones and purchases components, while Samsung Display manufactures panels and is both a major supplier to Samsung Electronics and a competitor to BOE.
The precise deciding factor has not been publicly verified. Available reports do not establish that Samsung rejected BOE because of inferior image quality, poor manufacturing yields, patent concerns, pricing, or any single other cause. Android Authority’s account notes that the cancellation reporting did not establish a specific reason. Internal opposition is reported; its underlying cause remains uncertain.

Why a BOE Galaxy S panel would have mattered
If the proposal had gone ahead, it would have marked a notable change: reports described BOE’s potential supply as the first use of a third-party display supplier in the Galaxy S flagship line, where Samsung Display has been the established OLED supplier. That distinction applies to the Galaxy S series, not every Samsung product. Samsung uses outside suppliers in other product categories and in some lower-priced mobile devices. Android Authority discusses the significance, while Samsung’s first-quarter 2026 interim report provides company operating context.
What the reports mean for Galaxy S27 buyers
If the current sourcing plan holds, Samsung Display is the expected supplier for the standard S27. Samsung has not publicly confirmed final panel sourcing for the unreleased phone, so this remains a reported expectation rather than a product specification.

The supplier name alone cannot establish how the screen will look or perform. Brightness, refresh rate, color, durability, calibration, manufacturing variation, and the phone’s implementation all depend on details that have not been confirmed for the S27. There is likewise no confirmed retail-price consequence. Losing a potentially lower-cost supplier could reduce Samsung Electronics’ negotiating leverage, but it does not prove the phone will cost more; the reported $5 panel estimate is not a confirmed saving passed through to buyers.

The reported S27 OLED setback is separate from Samsung’s TV-panel sourcing. ET News said Samsung and BOE were also discussing broader cooperation, including LCD panels for Samsung TVs and a possible expansion of BOE’s supply. The same report estimated BOE’s TV LCD volume for Samsung could rise from the low-to-mid millions in 2025 to around 5 million in 2026. Those are industry estimates reported by ET News, not figures confirmed by Samsung. ET News also reported that relations had improved after a November 2025 patent-royalty agreement, following a period in which Samsung had largely halted BOE transactions after 2023.

That reported thaw should not be confused with proof that all disputes are resolved or that every product category is covered by the same commercial terms. Samsung’s historical reports listed BOE among suppliers for certain display-related purchases, but the product category and reporting period matter: those disclosures do not show that BOE supplies every Galaxy model or that past arrangements continue unchanged. See Samsung’s 2021 half-year report and 2023 half-year interim report.
Samsung’s official first-quarter 2026 report does not publicly confirm the rumored S27 sourcing decision. Its second-quarter 2026 earnings release reported Samsung Display revenue of KRW 7.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 0.7 trillion, and emphasized demand for high-end mobile OLED products; that financial commentary is context about the business, not confirmation of the S27 panel supplier. Samsung’s earnings release sets out those results.
