At the July 2024 launch of its new foldables, Samsung said it hoped to sell 10% more Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 devices than it had sold of the previous year’s Fold5 and Flip5 generation. The figure was a combined-generation growth goal, not a stated unit target for either model, and it was a forecast—not proof of sales achieved.
What Samsung’s 10% forecast meant
Roh Tae-moon, president of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience division, reportedly said the company could not give an exact sales figure but hoped to sell 10% more of the new products than the prior generation. The report was published July 12, 2024, two days after Samsung unveiled the phones. Android Headlines reported the statement.
The natural reading is that Samsung was comparing the Fold6 and Flip6 generation together with the Fold5 and Flip5 generation together. The cited statement does not establish a separate 10% target for each model, provide the previous generation’s unit sales, or define whether “sales” meant purchases by consumers, units sold into retail channels, shipments, or production. Those measures are not interchangeable.
When the forecast was made
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 on July 10, 2024. Its U.S. announcement said preorders began that day and general retail availability began July 24. The growth goal therefore came at launch, before the phones had been on sale long enough for the statement itself to demonstrate a sales outcome. Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement.

What Samsung offered to support demand
Samsung positioned the Fold6 and Flip6 as refinements to its foldable range, with Galaxy AI features, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, and strengthened materials. Samsung also announced seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. Those features and commitments explain the company’s product pitch; they do not establish that any one of them caused buyers to purchase more devices. Samsung’s global product announcement.
Why a 10% gain mattered in a tougher market
The launch-period Android Headlines report, attributing figures to Counterpoint Research, said Samsung’s share of the global foldable-phone market fell from 58% in the first quarter of 2023 to 23% in the first quarter of 2024. In the same period, it reported Huawei’s share rising from 14% to 35%, Honor’s from 3% to 12%, and Motorola’s from 1% to 11%. Market share and unit sales answer different questions. Samsung could have sold more Fold and Flip devices year over year while losing share if the overall foldable market grew faster. Nor does the market-share report show that the 10% target was a formal response to those figures.
The product trade-off behind the target
The new models brought design, software, durability, and processor updates, but contemporary coverage characterized the changes as evolutionary rather than a radical redesign. That coverage also criticized the Fold6 for retaining camera hardware used in earlier generations and Samsung for not making a major increase to wired charging. Those are criticisms of the launch generation, not evidence of a sales result or a measured defect.

For buyers, the practical decision is separate from Samsung’s forecast: the Fold6 suits people who value a large inner screen and multitasking, while the Flip6 offers a more compact folded form. Foldable buyers should also weigh the premium purchase cost, repair coverage, and local service options against those form-factor benefits.
Production plans are not proof of foldable sales
A contemporaneous SamMobile report citing TheElec described Samsung’s broader first-half 2024 production plans for Galaxy phones and tablets: 22% higher production in the first quarter, a planned 3% year-over-year increase in the second quarter, about 114.4 million devices planned for the half, and about 49.9 million planned for the second quarter. The report said second-half production might be adjusted according to foldable demand. These figures cover phones and tablets broadly; they do not show how many Fold6 or Flip6 units Samsung sold or whether its 10% goal was met. SamMobile’s production report.

What is known about the eventual result
The cited launch-period statement establishes Samsung’s expectation, not the final global sell-through or shipment total. It gives no later tally for the Fold6 and Flip6, and the broader production figures cannot be substituted for such a tally. On the available evidence, whether Samsung achieved 10% growth remains unestablished.
