Salesforce completed its acquisition of Own Company on November 18, 2024, paying approximately $1.9 billion in cash after accounting for Salesforce’s existing roughly 10% stake. Own’s backup, recovery, archiving, sandbox-seeding, discovery and governance tools are now being developed and sold as part of Salesforce’s broader data-protection portfolio.
What Salesforce bought
Own, formerly known as OwnBackup, built cloud data-protection and management software initially focused on SaaS backup and recovery. Salesforce said Own had nearly 7,000 customers when the deal was announced on September 5, 2024.
The platform extends beyond copying data. Its capabilities include:
- Automated and granular backup and recovery for records, files and metadata
- Archiving of older or less frequently used information
- Sandbox and test-data seeding, including controlled or masked data sets
- Security monitoring, data discovery and historical analytics
- Retention, audit and governance workflows
Salesforce already offered Salesforce Backup, Shield and Data Mask. The acquisition therefore adds breadth and integration rather than creating Salesforce’s first backup or security product.

|---|---|
| September 5, 2024 | Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to acquire Own Company. |
| Announced consideration | Approximately $1.9 billion in cash, net of Salesforce’s existing approximately 10% ownership stake and subject to customary adjustments. |
| November 18, 2024 | Salesforce announced that the acquisition had closed. |
The $1.9 billion figure is not a per-share offer price and should not be read as an unadjusted standalone valuation. Salesforce said at announcement that it expected the transaction to become free-cash-flow accretive beginning in the second year after closing; that was management guidance, not a guaranteed result. Salesforce’s SEC-filed announcement explains the consideration and expected timing.
Why data protection matters in Salesforce
A highly available SaaS service is not the same as a customer-controlled recovery copy. Records can still be deleted accidentally, changed by faulty automation, corrupted by an import, exposed through compromised credentials or affected by a cyberattack. Organizations may also need historical data for retention, investigations or regulated processes.
Salesforce linked Own to the need for trustworthy, governed data for artificial-intelligence applications. That positioning does not guarantee accurate or safe AI results; it means that recovery, lineage, access controls and retention become more important as companies use CRM data in analytics and AI systems.

These terms are different
- Backup: Recoverable copies of data and metadata.
- Recovery: Restoring records, files, relationships or metadata after loss or corruption.
- Archiving: Moving older data out of production while preserving access and retention controls.
- Data seeding: Supplying selected, often masked, production-like data to sandboxes for testing or training.
- Security and discovery: Finding exposure, suspicious changes, access issues and historical trends.
- Governance: Applying roles, audit trails, encryption, retention and compliance procedures.
What customers get under Salesforce
Salesforce documentation now uses names such as Own from Salesforce and Own by Salesforce. The product family includes Backup & Recover, Archive, Seed and Salesforce Discover, with related security and analytics functions. Salesforce describes these products as connected through platform processes and APIs; they are not all functions embedded in the core CRM runtime. See the Own product FAQ for current naming and scope.

What Salesforce Backup includes
Salesforce says its Backup product is available in Lightning Experience for Professional, Enterprise, Performance and Unlimited Editions when the Salesforce Backup & Recover add-on license is purchased. It is not automatically included with every Salesforce edition.

Salesforce’s Backup documentation says file-storage billing uses 10% of actual gigabytes as effective storage for the documented product. For example, 100 GB of Salesforce files produces 10 GB of effective charged storage under that calculation. This is not a complete product price. Salesforce says overall pricing is tailored to customer needs rather than published as one universal list price; see its pricing help.
Implementation is more than buying a license
Salesforce’s setup guidance describes a typical onboarding sequence:
- Create a dedicated authenticated Salesforce user.
- Provision an Own from Salesforce Platform account.
- Configure network access or allowlisting where required.
- Add a Salesforce backup service in Own.
- Authenticate that service with the dedicated user.
- Monitor the initial full backup; later runs are generally incremental or scheduled according to configuration.
- Configure SSO or MFA, IP restrictions, customer-managed keys, business units and user roles.
The first backup can take longer than later runs, and data and file backups are handled as separate processes. Salesforce recommends configuring BYOK before the first production backup when customer-managed encryption keys are required. Its setup guide lists these controls.

Questions buyers should ask
Recovery scope
- Which objects, metadata, files and relationships are covered?
- Can the service recover individual records and fields as well as large data sets?
- What happens after mass deletion, bad automation, a failed integration or compromised credentials?
- Are backups logically isolated from the production org?
Governance and compliance
- What retention, legal-hold and deletion controls are available?
- Are audit logs, role-based access and BYOK supported?
- Where are copies stored, and which regional or government-cloud terms apply?
- Which certifications and contractual commitments are relevant to the customer’s industry?
Cost and operations
- What are the license, storage, retention, implementation, API and support costs?
- How many Salesforce orgs and business units are included?
- Can data be exported if the contract ends?
- What recovery testing and reporting are included?
Salesforce-owned protection versus an independent provider
Owning the backup platform can simplify procurement, support and Salesforce integration. It may also make it easier to align backup, archiving, seeding and CRM administration under one relationship.
The trade-off is greater dependence on Salesforce and less separation between the primary application and the protection vendor. Buyers may prefer an independent provider when they need multi-platform coverage, stronger procurement separation, specialized resilience controls or a backup copy outside Salesforce’s corporate ecosystem. Neither model is automatically safer; the decision depends on isolation, governance, recovery performance and contract terms.
Organizations commonly compare Own from Salesforce with Salesforce-focused providers such as Gearset, Odaseva and Spanning, or broader enterprise vendors such as Veeam. Features, regional availability and prices change, so vendors should be evaluated against the same coverage and recovery requirements.

Risks that a backup product does not remove
Backup is one component of disaster recovery, not the whole plan. Recovery-time and recovery-point objectives also depend on integrations, identity systems, external files, custom code, third-party packages, operational runbooks and testing.
A restore can overwrite valid updates, recreate records that should stay deleted, violate retention rules or break relationships and automation. Salesforce documents different paths for restoring records and files and for exporting complex recoveries; it does not promise that every scenario is a one-click operation. Test restores in a controlled environment and document who can authorize production changes. See Salesforce’s restore guidance.
Bottom line for Salesforce customers
Salesforce bought Own to make data protection a broader platform capability, not merely to add a basic backup button. The completed $1.9 billion transaction brings recovery, archiving, sandbox seeding, discovery and governance alongside Salesforce Backup, Shield and Data Mask. Customers should still verify edition and entitlement limits, pricing, data residency, administrative separation and restore performance—and prove recovery through regular testing before treating the system as a disaster-recovery plan.
