RTX 5070 vs. RTX 4090: Did Nvidia Really Deliver 4090-Class Performance for $549?

The RTX 5070 can approach RTX 4090-like displayed FPS in selected DLSS 4 games, but it is not an RTX 4090 equivalent in raw gaming performance.

Short answer: no—not in the ordinary meaning of “performance.” Nvidia launched the GeForce RTX 5070 at a $549 US MSRP and demonstrated RTX 4090-like displayed frame rates in selected games using DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. But independent testing found the RTX 4090 dramatically faster when both cards had to do comparable rendering work. The RTX 5070 is best understood as a 1440p Blackwell GPU with advanced AI-assisted features, not a $549 replacement for the RTX 4090.

What Nvidia actually claimed

Nvidia announced the RTX 5070 on January 6, 2025, with a US launch MSRP of $549. Its messaging connected the card’s Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4 features with performance comparable to an RTX 4090 in selected demonstrations. The announcement is available in Nvidia’s newsroom release, while the product family’s specifications and features appear on Nvidia’s RTX 5070 family page.

That was a feature-enabled comparison, not a claim that the two GPUs had equal raw rendering capability in every game. Nvidia’s comparison relied heavily on DLSS 4—especially Multi Frame Generation—which can create multiple AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. The distinction matters because a higher displayed frame rate does not necessarily mean the GPU rendered an equivalent number of complete frames.

The RTX 5070 was ultimately released on March 5, 2025, rather than the February availability suggested in Nvidia’s initial launch messaging. Its $549 figure was the official US launch MSRP, not a guarantee that every board-partner model would sell for that amount.

For comparison, the RTX 4090 is a former flagship with substantially more conventional rendering resources and 24GB of VRAM. Specifications alone do not determine gaming performance, but the large difference in memory capacity and GPU resources makes a literal, all-purpose equivalence implausible. Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture documentation provides the technical background for the RTX 5070 design.

Why DLSS 4 changes the numbers

To understand Nvidia’s claim, separate four different technologies and measurements:

  • Native rendering: The GPU renders each displayed frame directly at the selected resolution.
  • DLSS Super Resolution: The game renders internally at a lower resolution, then AI reconstructs the image for output at a higher resolution.
  • Frame Generation: AI creates an additional frame between traditionally rendered frames.
  • Multi Frame Generation: On supported RTX 50-series cards, DLSS 4 can create multiple generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame.

Suppose a GPU renders 50 base frames per second and generates two intermediate frames for each one. The display may show approximately 150 frames per second, depending on the game and implementation. That can make motion appear substantially smoother, but it does not mean the GPU performed the same amount of original rendering work as a card that natively rendered 150 frames per second.

It also does not make latency identical. Input is primarily reflected through the traditionally rendered frames, while generated frames fill in motion between them. Frame-time consistency, base FPS, visual artifacts and input responsiveness therefore remain important alongside the headline displayed-FPS number.

Independent tests found a large raw-performance gap

In conventional gaming, the RTX 5070 is nowhere near the RTX 4090. TechSpot’s 16-game testing measured the RTX 4090 as averaging 63% faster at 1440p than the RTX 5070. That result directly contradicts the idea that the RTX 5070 is generally as fast as the former flagship.

The precise gap varies with the game, resolution, graphics settings and review suite. Tom’s Hardware’s review placed the RTX 5070 as a meaningful step above RTX 4070-class products, but not as a conventional high-end replacement. Its analysis also found that the card’s theoretical shader-compute improvement over the RTX 4070 was relatively modest compared with the enormous performance implied by Nvidia’s most aggressive AI-assisted comparisons.

The practical rule is simple: in games without the relevant DLSS features, the RTX 5070 exposes its midrange positioning. In games that use only traditional rendering—or where you compare base FPS before frame generation—the RTX 4090 remains in a different performance class.

Ray tracing helps the RTX 5070, but does not erase the gap

Blackwell brings newer ray-tracing hardware and makes the RTX 5070 more capable in demanding ray-traced games than its conventional specifications alone might suggest. Even so, ray tracing does not turn it into an RTX 4090. Tom’s Hardware’s ray-tracing testing and TechSpot’s results both show that the higher-end card retains a substantial advantage.

Ray tracing can also increase memory pressure. At 4K, with high-resolution textures, path tracing or extensive modifications, the RTX 5070’s 12GB capacity may become a constraint. When VRAM is exhausted, lowering the output frame-rate target is not always enough; the game may exhibit stuttering, texture problems or inconsistent frame times.

The narrow scenario where Nvidia’s claim has merit

The comparison is most defensible in carefully selected DLSS 4 demonstrations. Ars Technica reported that, in Cyberpunk 2077, an RTX 5070 with DLSS Multi Frame Generation could reach a similar average displayed frame rate to an RTX 4090 using the older form of frame generation.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

That is a meaningful demonstration of what DLSS 4 can do, but it is not evidence that the RTX 5070 renders like an RTX 4090. The comparison depends on the game supporting the technology, the selected image-quality and ray-tracing settings, and whether the numbers refer to base rendered frames or the final output after generated frames are included.

A responsible comparison should therefore report at least:

  • Base or traditionally rendered FPS;
  • Displayed FPS after frame generation;
  • 1% lows and frame-time consistency;
  • Input latency and responsiveness;
  • Resolution, ray-tracing settings and upscaling mode.

Using only the final DLSS 4 frame counter can make a slower GPU appear equivalent to a much faster one. The result may still look smoother, but it should not be described as identical rendering performance.

What 12GB of VRAM means in practice

The RTX 5070’s 12GB of GDDR7 is fast, but capacity and speed are different issues. Twelve gigabytes can be sufficient for excellent 1440p gaming, including many ray-traced games with sensible settings and DLSS. It can become limiting in particular 4K titles, path-traced scenes, heavily modded games and workloads using very large texture or geometry assets.

DLSS can reduce the amount of work required to render an image, but it does not eliminate the need to store textures, buffers and scene data in video memory. Likewise, Multi Frame Generation can increase displayed FPS without solving a VRAM shortage. This is one reason an RTX 5070 may be attractive for a 1440p buyer but a less comfortable long-term choice for someone targeting native 4K.

Is the RTX 5070 worth $549 in 2026?

Buy it when

  • You can find it at or near the $549 US launch MSRP.
  • Your main target is 1440p at high or ultra settings.
  • You play many titles with mature DLSS support.
  • You value Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem, creator software support, NVENC workflows or broader DLSS availability.
  • You understand that generated FPS is not the same as base rendering performance.

Think twice when

  • You want native 4K performance with minimal upscaling.
  • You play demanding path-traced games or heavily modded titles.
  • You expect to keep the card for years while using maximum textures and ray tracing.
  • The card costs substantially more than MSRP.
  • You play competitive games where base FPS and latency matter more than a boosted frame counter.

At the original price, the RTX 5070 is a reasonable Nvidia-focused 1440p option. Nvidia’s Marketplace listed the card at $549, and Best Buy showed a Founders Edition listing at $549.99 in the August 18, 2026 pricing snapshot. These are time-sensitive US observations: inventory, taxes, shipping and board-partner premiums can change the final price. Check the Nvidia Marketplace listing or Best Buy listing before purchasing.

The RTX 5070 Ti is also worth considering if the budget allows. Nvidia launched it at $749, and its 16GB of VRAM gives it more memory headroom. That does not make it automatically better value, but the extra capacity is relevant for buyers concerned about 4K, ray tracing and longer ownership.

A used RTX 4090 offers genuine high-end native rendering and 24GB of VRAM, but it also brings used-card risks, higher power consumption and potentially greater size and cooling requirements. Its value depends on the specific seller, condition, warranty and current price; the $549 RTX 5070 should not be marketed as an equivalent substitute.

Verdict

Nvidia’s $549 price was real, and its RTX 5070 could approach RTX 4090-like displayed frame rates in selected DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation demonstrations. But independent testing shows that the RTX 4090 was 63% faster on average at 1440p in TechSpot’s 16-game conventional test sample, and the older flagship has much more VRAM and raw rendering capability.

So the accurate conclusion is not “the RTX 5070 is an RTX 4090 for $549.” It is: the RTX 5070 is a midrange 1440p GPU whose AI-assisted features can make it look unusually competitive in supported games. Buy it near MSRP for its feature set and 1440p performance—not for the promise of RTX 4090-class native rendering.
