President Donald Trump granted Ross William Ulbricht a full and unconditional pardon on January 21, 2025, ending the federal sentence he had been serving for his Silk Road convictions. Ulbricht had been sentenced to life imprisonment and lifetime supervised release on May 29, 2015. The pardon was not a commutation: the official warrant identifies it as a pardon for his federal convictions.
What happened to Ross Ulbricht?
The U.S. Department of Justice’s clemency register records that Trump pardoned Ulbricht on January 21, 2025. The accompanying presidential warrant describes the action as “A Full and Unconditional Pardon” for Ulbricht’s convictions in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
That wording matters. A pardon is the action documented here; the warrant does not call it a sentence commutation. The federal record establishes the grant and its stated scope, but the materials cited here do not set out every possible collateral legal consequence.
Why was Ulbricht serving a life sentence?
Ulbricht was convicted in connection with Silk Road, an online marketplace. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York described the site as a hidden website where users could anonymously buy and sell illegal drugs and other unlawful goods and services. The office said it operated from January 2011 to October 2013.

A jury found Ulbricht guilty on all counts in February 2015, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The DOJ clemency register lists the offenses as aiding and abetting distribution of drugs over the internet, continuing criminal enterprise, computer-hacking conspiracy, fraud with identification documents, and money-laundering conspiracy. The case therefore involved more than drug sales alone.
On May 29, 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced to life imprisonment and lifetime supervised release. That sentence date and the pardon date are recorded by DOJ.

What led up to the pardon?
In May 2024, Trump said he would help Ulbricht during a speech at the Libertarian Party National Convention, according to the Associated Press. After signing the pardon, Trump announced it on Truth Social. AP reproduced his statement: “It was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross.”
Those public remarks document a campaign-period commitment and the announcement, but they do not establish every reason behind the decision. The official warrant and DOJ clemency register establish the pardon itself.

What does “10 years into a life sentence” mean?
It is a rounded description, not an exact elapsed interval. DOJ dates the sentence to May 29, 2015, and the pardon to January 21, 2025—less than ten years apart. The pardon therefore came nearly ten years after sentencing, not after a precisely completed decade of the sentence.
