At Roblox Developers Conference 2024, Roblox announced new ways for creators to earn and previewed an open-source, multimodal 3D foundation model. The September 6, 2024 announcement covered paid desktop experiences, Shopify-powered merchandise, automated pricing tools and a longer-term generative-3D system—not a released feature that builds a finished game from one prompt.
By August 18, 2026, parts of that plan had become a broader creator economy: Creator Rewards, subscriptions, Creator Store sales, UGC, advertising, commerce APIs, regional pricing and DevEx. The original paid-experience percentages and AI preview should still be treated as historical announcements unless current Roblox terms say otherwise.
The short version
- Paid experiences: TechCrunch reported desktop revenue shares of 50% at a $9.99 price, 60% at $29.99 and 70% at $49.99.
- Physical products: Roblox announced a Shopify partnership for selected creators, brands and commerce partners, initially planned as a 2024 pilot.
- Pricing: Price Optimization and regional-pricing recommendations were intended to test what players in different markets would pay.
- Generative AI: Roblox previewed a multimodal 3D foundation model that could generate spatial content from text, video and other inputs, with creators expected to edit and integrate the results.
Roblox framed these moves as part of an ambition to capture 10% of global gaming-content revenue, an objective rather than an achieved market-share result. (TechCrunch, September 6, 2024)
What Roblox announced at RDC 2024
Paid access to desktop experiences
The reported revenue tiers applied to a player paying for access to an experience on desktop. They were not the same as the percentage a developer receives from an ordinary in-experience purchase.

The figures above are the event-reporting figures, not a current 2026 payout schedule. Roblox described the change as future-facing, and the announcement did not establish that the same terms applied to mobile or console purchases. A developer considering a paywall should check the applicable Roblox policy and platform terms before setting a price.
Paid access may suit a complete premium game with a clear value proposition. It also removes the free trial that helps most Roblox experiences earn discovery, so a paywall does not replace marketing, updates, support or compliance work.
Shopify-powered physical merchandise
Roblox said selected creators, brands and e-commerce partners would be able to sell physical merchandise inside experiences through Shopify, with a pilot planned for later in 2024. The current Creator Hub describes Roblox Commerce APIs and identifies Shopify as the first integrated partner. The same documentation describes an Approved Merchandiser Program that can connect qualifying physical purchases with digital Roblox items. (Roblox Creator Hub monetization documentation)
An integration does not remove normal commerce obligations. Inventory, fulfillment, returns, customer service, taxes, product safety and geographic availability remain the seller’s responsibility. It is therefore most useful to a creator with an established audience and an operation capable of shipping reliably.

Price Optimization and regional pricing
Price Optimization was announced as a way to test prices and find a balance between conversion and revenue per buyer. A lower price can produce more transactions; a higher price can produce more revenue from each transaction. Automated tests do not guarantee a lasting lift, especially when a live event, traffic source or item placement changes during the test.
Regional pricing was intended to recommend prices for local markets. Roblox’s current documentation says Regional Pricing can automatically determine local prices for in-game items and reports early testing with increased spending in markets including Mexico, Brazil and the Philippines. A lower local Robux price may improve conversion while reducing nominal revenue per sale, so developers should track total revenue, payer conversion and retention—not the displayed price alone. These current in-game-item rules should not be read as confirmation of the 2024 paid-access tiers.
What the generative-AI project actually was
Roblox described an open-source, multimodal 3D foundational model. The intended inputs included text prompts, video and other modalities, with the goal of producing spatially coherent 3D content. The event example involved a stylized world with environmental details and a creature.
That is different from generating a flat image or a linear video. A usable Roblox asset must work from multiple viewpoints, fit a scene, respect scale and materials, and function inside an interactive experience. Roblox also said creators would need to review, modify and integrate generated output.

The 2024 announcement was not evidence of a public “make an entire polished Roblox game from one prompt” product. Generated meshes, scripts or behaviors can still be inconsistent, repetitive, insecure, inefficient or unsuitable for moderation and copyright requirements. Human design, testing, optimization and publishing decisions remain necessary.
From the 2024 preview to Cube and Studio’s AI direction

Roblox’s 2025 annual-report materials identify the 3D work as Cube or Cube 3D. At RDC 2025, the company described functional assets and APIs for text generation, text-to-speech, speech-to-text and real-time voice-chat translation. (Roblox RDC 2025)
In its Q1 2026 shareholder letter, Roblox described Planning Mode, procedural and mesh generation, NPC testing agents and an AI-native Studio. It also said nearly half of its top 1,000 creators used Studio Assistant or MCP-related tools; that figure is Roblox’s own report, not an independently audited measurement. How creators can earn on Roblox in 2026
Roblox now presents monetization as a portfolio rather than one payout formula. The available route depends on the audience, product and eligibility requirements.

Creator Rewards eligibility is not automatic
Roblox’s current Creator Rewards documentation lists two distinct programs:
- Daily Engagement Rewards: 5 Robux when an eligible Active Spender spends at least 10 minutes in an experience, subject to the first-three-experiences-per-day rule. An Active Spender must have spent at least $9.99 on Roblox during the previous 60 days.
- Audience Expansion Rewards: 35% of the first $100 in qualifying Robux purchases made by a qualifying new or reactivated user attributed through an eligible share link, direct link or search path.
Audience Expansion also requires the experience to maintain an average of at least 100 daily active users for 60 days. The creator needs an ID-verified account in good standing and a valid DevEx account. Roblox documents a 60-day holding period for Creator Rewards. (Roblox Creator Rewards documentation)
Those conditions mean the 5-Robux figure is not a payment for every player or every session. It is a conditional engagement reward, and Audience Expansion is a separate, capped acquisition incentive.
DevEx is a conversion mechanism, not a purchase split
At RDC 2025, Roblox announced that creators would receive 8.5% more when converting Earned Robux through DevEx, subject to the Developer Exchange terms. The announcement was made September 5, 2025. “8.5% more” describes the announced cash-out-rate increase; it is not an 8.5-percentage-point increase in every creator revenue share. (Roblox RDC 2025)

Choosing a route: practical trade-offs
When paid access makes sense
- The game offers a complete, premium experience that players can understand before purchase.
- The team can fund updates, support and marketing without relying on a large free-to-play funnel.
- The team has checked the current desktop, mobile and console rules rather than relying on the 2024 reported tiers.
When Creator Rewards are more realistic
- The experience retains players for meaningful sessions and attracts new or returning users.
- Analytics can separate qualifying Active Spenders from casual visitors.
- The creator can sustain the required audience and attribution practices.
When physical merchandise is worth testing
- Characters or events have a recognizable brand and evidence of fan demand.
- Inventory, shipping, returns, taxes and support are already planned.
- The creator can start with a limited, measurable product run rather than assuming virtual popularity guarantees sales.
How to use AI without treating it as passive income
- Prototype environments, assets and behaviors quickly, then inspect geometry, scripts, performance and security.
- Test generated content with real players for usability, moderation and originality.
- Keep a human approval step for copyright, attribution, safety and policy compliance.
- Expect easier production to increase competition and content volume; it does not guarantee discovery.
What creators should measure
Monetization decisions should be based on a small set of comparable metrics: conversion from visitor to payer, revenue per visitor, retention after purchase, session length, regional payer behavior and the cost of acquiring a new user. Price tests can be misleading when the sample is small or when a promotion, seasonal event or algorithmic traffic change overlaps the experiment.
For physical products, add fulfillment time, refund rate, support workload and contribution margin. For AI-assisted production, add cleanup time, bug rate, moderation incidents and server or asset-performance costs. A faster first draft is valuable only if it reduces the cost of shipping a reliable experience.
Bottom line
Roblox’s September 2024 announcements connected two strategies: make it easier to build richer 3D experiences and give successful creators more ways to monetize them. The paid-access percentages were a reported desktop proposal, Shopify commerce began as a planned pilot, and the AI reveal was a foundation-model preview. By 2026, Cube-related systems and Studio tools had become more concrete, while monetization had expanded into rewards, subscriptions, stores, UGC, ads, commerce and DevEx.
None of those options is automatic income. The durable advantage still comes from a compelling experience, repeat engagement, measured pricing, audience growth and the operational ability to handle content, commerce and compliance.
