Rivian has recalled 14 potentially affected 2027 R2 SUVs because a high-voltage battery-pack fastener may not have been tightened correctly. If the fastener is loose, the vehicle could lose drive power while moving, increasing crash risk. Owners should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) and arrange Rivian’s no-cost remedy if their vehicle is included.
What the Rivian R2 recall covers
The recall is listed as NHTSA campaign 26V625000 and Rivian campaign FSAM-1888. It concerns a fastener in the high-voltage battery pack, not every R2. The NHTSA record identifies 14 potentially affected vehicles. NHTSA recall lookup and TechCrunch’s report describe the campaign and its safety issue.
According to TechCrunch’s account of Rivian’s filing, a manufacturing operator at the company’s Normal, Illinois factory discovered an under-torqued fastener on September 17, 2026. Rivian investigated and reprogrammed the automated assembly station to reject fasteners that are not tightened to specification. At the time of the filing, Rivian said it was not aware of customer reports, crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the condition.
How to check whether your R2 is affected
- Find your vehicle’s 17-character VIN. It is typically shown on vehicle documents and on the vehicle itself.
- Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup. The campaign record says VIN search availability is expected November 28, 2026; if the lookup does not yet show this campaign, contact Rivian or check again after that date.
- Contact Rivian or an authorized Rivian service location to confirm whether your vehicle is included and what service is needed.
NHTSA’s campaign record also lists November 28, 2026, as the expected date for owner notification letters. The recall affects a small identified population, but do not assume a vehicle is clear based only on model year or a general description; use the VIN check and Rivian’s confirmation.

What the repair involves and whether it costs you
Rivian’s remedy is to inspect and correctly torque the fastener. If components were damaged, the repair may involve repairing or replacing them. Rivian says the remedy is provided at no cost to customers. NHTSA explains that manufacturers provide safety-recall remedies without charge.
Rivian told TechCrunch that all affected vehicles were at service centers for inspection and correction. If you believe your R2 may be affected, contact Rivian rather than attempting to inspect or tighten a high-voltage battery fastener yourself; the campaign concerns a high-voltage system and the official repair is handled through Rivian service.

Why a battery fastener can create a driving risk
The safety concern identified in the recall is possible loss of drive power while driving. A vehicle that unexpectedly stops providing power can create a crash risk, particularly in traffic. The recall materials do not say that every potentially affected vehicle will lose power; they identify a defect condition that could lead to that outcome.
Rivian’s reported corrective action addresses production by reprogramming the automated assembly station to reject improperly torqued fasteners. That manufacturing change is separate from the owner remedy: potentially affected vehicles still require the inspection and any needed repair through Rivian.
