A Model Y can also be configured with a small third row, while the R2 is a five-seater. Which is the better buy depends on the exact trim, when it is available, and the costs you can confirm for your household. Pricing and specifications below were checked against the cited manufacturer pages and the September 23, 2026 Edmunds comparison reported by AP; they can change.
Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y: trims and starting prices
The figures below do not all use the same price basis. Rivian’s product page lists starting prices; AP’s Edmunds comparison reports prices including destination. Rivian labels its R2 range estimates preliminary and subject to change, and says they are based on the EPA test cycle but are not official EPA values.
| Vehicle and configuration | Published range | Price and basis | Drive, seating and timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rivian R2 Standard | 275 miles, preliminary estimate | $44,990 starting price on Rivian’s page; $46,485 including destination in AP’s Edmunds comparison | Single-motor rear-wheel drive; five seats; Rivian page labels timing 2027 |
| Rivian R2 Premium | 330 miles, preliminary estimate | $53,990 starting price on Rivian’s page; destination-included trim price not stated by the cited source | Dual-motor all-wheel drive; five seats; Rivian page labels timing late 2026 |
| Rivian R2 Performance | 330 miles, preliminary estimate | $57,990 starting price on Rivian’s page; $59,485 including destination in AP’s Edmunds comparison | Five seats; Rivian page says available now |
| Tesla Model Y configurations in the comparison | 294–357 miles across the cited lineup | $41,380–$63,380 including destination, from base Model Y to three-row Model Y L in AP’s Edmunds comparison | Configurations include a base AWD, RWD Premium and three-row versions; seating varies by configuration |
Rivian’s live page says prices and options may change. Its Standard and Premium schedule labels are manufacturer timing statements, not confirmation that every configuration is available to order in every market. The AP/Edmunds comparison said only the most expensive R2 Performance was available at the time of its September 23, 2026 report, with lower-priced trims expected later. Check the live configuration and delivery information before comparing final quotes. Sources: Rivian R2 and AP’s Edmunds comparison.
Which has more range?
On published figures, the comparison gives the Model Y a higher top range: 357 miles for the RWD Premium, compared with 345 miles for the R2 Standard Long Range and 330 miles for most other R2 versions. The R2 Standard is listed at 275 miles. Edmunds/AP reports 294 miles for the base AWD Model Y. These are configuration-specific figures, and the R2 estimates on Rivian’s page are preliminary rather than official EPA ratings.

What Edmunds’ range test found
In Edmunds’ EV Range Test, the R2 Performance traveled 304 miles against its 330-mile estimate. The tested base rear-wheel-drive Model Y traveled 337 miles, while the Model Y L traveled 358 miles. These are test results for the named vehicles, not a guarantee for every trim or driver. Route, weather, speed, temperature and other conditions can affect real-world range. The comparison does not establish a controlled, trim-matched result for every version. Source: AP’s Edmunds comparison.
Can the R2 use Tesla Superchargers, and how fast does it charge?
Rivian says every R2 has a NACS charge port and can use Tesla Superchargers. The company advertises up to 150 miles of range added in 15 minutes and a 10%–80% DC fast charge in under 30 minutes. Rivian qualifies these as variable figures: the 15-minute claim assumes optimal conditions, and charging speed depends on factors including battery capacity, state of charge, temperature, charger capacity, weather and site conditions. Tesla advertises up to 162 miles added in 15 minutes for the Model Y. That figure is based on constant-speed highway efficiency, and Tesla says actual performance varies with Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, charge state, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. In Edmunds’ reported test, the Model Y charged slightly quicker than the R2. The two brands’ miles-added claims are not a like-for-like promise: they may reflect different vehicles and conditions. Which SUV has more cargo room and passenger utility?
Rivian lists 90.1 cubic feet of total R2 storage, including 79.4 cubic feet behind the front row with the rear seats folded and 28.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. The R2 is listed with five seats. Edmunds/AP reports 75.5 cubic feet of total storage for the five-seat Model Y. These are each manufacturer’s or comparison’s published capacity figures; they should not be assumed to share an identical measuring method.

| Utility measure | Rivian R2 | Tesla Model Y |
|---|---|---|
| Published total storage | 90.1 cubic feet | 75.5 cubic feet for the five-seat version, per AP/Edmunds |
| Behind rear seats | 28.7 cubic feet, per Rivian | not stated in the cited comparison |
| Maximum listed storage with seats folded | 79.4 cubic feet behind the front row, per Rivian | not stated in the cited comparison |
| Seating | Five seats | Five seats, with a third row available in some Premium and Model Y L configurations; the extra seats reduce cargo room when raised |
| Maximum towing | 4,400 pounds with Rivian’s Tow Package | 3,500 pounds, per AP/Edmunds |
Edmunds/AP describes passenger space as similar, with somewhat more rear headroom in the R2. It characterizes the Model Y’s ride as smoother and the R2’s as firmer; these are the comparison’s impressions, not a universal comfort verdict. The Model Y’s optional third row adds flexibility, but Edmunds/AP says it is better suited to children and smaller adults. R2 dimensions published by Rivian are 185.9 inches long, 84.7 inches wide, 66.9 inches high and a 115.6-inch wheelbase. Sources: Rivian R2 and AP’s Edmunds comparison.

The available figures do not establish a universal ownership-cost winner. A lower starting price does not by itself settle the comparison: destination, options, financing, insurance, taxes, charging and resale all affect what an individual household pays. Rivian notes that charging expense varies with local electricity rates and network pricing, while off-peak home charging may reduce costs. Tesla likewise points to lower-cost home electricity and makes general claims about lower maintenance than a comparable gasoline vehicle. Neither is a direct R2-versus-Model-Y household cost study. Tesla’s maintenance information estimates annual Model Y maintenance at $316–$643 and says costs vary with driving habits and model. That is Tesla’s estimate, not an independent comparison, and no corresponding R2 figure is established in the cited sources. It should not be treated as a like-for-like ownership-cost result. Build a fair comparison for your household

- Limited Edition: Part of the Matchbox series, numbered 3/100 in the collection.
- Vibrant Color: Striking blue finish that captures the eye and adds a touch of vibrancy.
- Compact Size: Measuring approximately 3 inches long, perfect for display or playtime.
- Purchase price after destination charges and selected options.

- Insurance for the exact trim and driver.
- Taxes, registration and other location-dependent fees.
- Tires, maintenance and expected resale value or depreciation over the chosen ownership period.
Changing the annual mileage, public-charging share or insurance quote can change the result. A useful comparison makes those inputs visible instead of presenting one vehicle as cheaper for every buyer.
How to choose between the R2 and Model Y
Favor the Model Y if the higher range figures in the cited lineup, its slightly quicker charging in Edmunds’ test, smoother ride as assessed in that comparison, or optional third-row seating matter most. Favor the R2 if its published cargo capacity, five-seat layout or higher maximum tow rating with the Tow Package better matches your needs. Before committing, compare the exact configurations available in your market, confirm final prices with destination and options, and use personalized insurance and charging-cost estimates.
