A fire in the parking lot at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, plant late on August 24, 2024, damaged more than 50 R1T pickups and R1S SUVs. Rivian said the factory building was unaffected and nobody was injured. The cause was not established in the reports available at the time.

What happened at Rivian’s Normal plant?

The Normal Fire Department received a call shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, after a fire broke out in a parking lot at Rivian’s Illinois plant. Firefighters extinguished the blaze before midnight and remained at the scene to monitor the area, according to InsideEVs’ August 26, 2024, report.

The vehicles were described as mostly R1T pickups and R1S SUVs, reportedly awaiting shipment. Rivian spokesperson said, “The plant itself is unaffected. There were no injuries.” The statement was quoted in the same InsideEVs report.

How many Rivians were damaged?

Reports gave different totals and used different descriptions of the damage. InsideEVs reported that more than 50 vehicles were damaged. An Associated Press report carried by Yahoo News in August 2024 said 55 vehicles were destroyed. The figures should be attributed to their respective reports: they do not establish one company-confirmed total for vehicles damaged versus destroyed.

Did the factory catch fire?

No. The fire was in the plant’s parking lot, not the factory building. Rivian said the plant itself was unaffected, and the reports cited above said no injuries were reported. Calling it a fire at the factory can be useful shorthand for the location, but it should not be taken to mean the building burned.

What caused the fire?

The cause was not known in the reports. Rivian said it was investigating, and the Associated Press report said the fire department turned the investigation over to the company. The available reporting does not establish a final investigative finding, so it does not support attributing the fire to a battery fault, a particular vehicle, or the way vehicles were parked.

Rivian’s emergency-response information

Rivian’s official emergency-response page links to separate R1T and R1S guides covering topics including high-voltage disconnection, fire response, towing, and storage. These are technical materials for emergency responders, not instructions for owners to fight an EV fire.

For example, Rivian’s May 2025 R1T Emergency Response Guide describes hazards associated with high-voltage battery fires, specifies protective equipment and tools for professional response, and directs that fire-damaged vehicles be stored away from other vehicles and buildings. It should be used as responder guidance, not as do-it-yourself firefighting advice.
