The best retirement trip is the one that fits your interests, budget, preferred pace and access needs—not a destination chosen because it is supposedly right for every retiree. Consider a road trip through public lands, a longer stay in one place, a city break, a planned group itinerary or a personally meaningful bucket-list journey. Then compare the actual travel time, costs, season, lodging and activity demands for your dates.
How to choose a retirement trip that fits
Start with the kind of experience you want, then work through the logistics before settling on a destination. A practical comparison should include:
- Total budget and cost volatility: Account for transport, lodging, meals, admission, local transit and a cushion for changes. Costs vary by destination and dates.
- Travel time and connections: Consider the full journey, not just the distance on a map. A direct drive or flight may suit you better than several transfers.
- Activity intensity and access: Check walking distances, stairs, terrain, seating and available alternatives for activities that are strenuous or inaccessible.
- Season and closures: Verify weather and operating schedules for the precise place and dates. Conditions and access can change seasonally.
- Lodging and services: Compare location and accessibility, and consider how close you want to be to medical services.
- Planning style: Decide whether you want to handle transport and reservations yourself or prefer a guided or curated itinerary.
Recent AARP Research suggests that travel is a priority for many surveyed adults age 50 and older, but the findings are not retiree-only statistics. In its 2026 study, 64% expected to take at least one leisure trip, and 86% ranked travel among their top three discretionary spending priorities. The survey covered 2,051 U.S. adults age 18 and older who met travel-related screening criteria: they had taken a qualifying leisure trip and used an online travel site in the prior two years, and intended personal travel in 2026. AARP Research’s 2026 travel trends also found that 49% reported taking shorter trips as an adjustment, 48% reported traveling by car more than before, and 39% reported choosing a single destination rather than multiple destinations. These are options to weigh, not rules for every older traveler.

National park or public-lands road trip
A road trip can combine scenery, outdoor time and control over how each day is paced. Choose a manageable route, leave room for breaks and avoid packing too many distant stops into one day. Look for lodging near the places you plan to visit, and check whether there are scenic drives, visitor facilities or less strenuous activities alongside hikes.

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident age 62 or older, compare the federal Senior Pass with the entrance and standard day-use fees on your particular itinerary. The National Park Service says the pass is accepted at participating sites operated by agencies including the NPS, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The NPS Senior Pass page, last updated January 7, 2026, lists a Senior Lifetime Pass for $80 and a Senior Annual Pass for $20. The pass covers entrance and standard day-use recreation fees at participating federal sites and may discount some expanded amenities; it does not mean every activity or service is included.
Where fees are charged per noncommercial vehicle, the pass admits its holder and vehicle occupants. Where fees are charged per person, it admits the holder and up to three adults; children under 16 are admitted free. The pass is nontransferable and cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. NPS lists in-person, mailed and digital purchase options; mail delivery may take up to three weeks. Check the official page and the fee schedule for your planned sites before buying.

Stay in one place and explore at a slower pace
Choose a town, city or region as a base and take day trips rather than changing hotels frequently. This can reduce packing and travel between stops while still leaving room to explore. Before booking, compare local transport, walkability, accommodation access and the time required for day tours. Check the season for your destination and leave unplanned time for rest or a change of plans.
City, culture and food break
A city trip can bring museums, performances, historic sites, neighborhoods and restaurants together in one itinerary. Look at transit options and walking demands for each planned day, and choose lodging with convenient access to the activities you care about. Build in rest periods rather than assuming every attraction can fit into a tightly scheduled day.

Organized group or curated itinerary
A group trip may suit travelers who want a prearranged route, shared activities or less independent planning. AARP Research found that 40% of the adults age 50 and older in its survey expressed interest in organized group trips. After respondents were introduced to a curated-trip concept, 55% expressed interest in a personalized itinerary. These survey results indicate interest, not that a group trip is right for everyone or that any particular provider has been vetted.
Before booking, review the specific itinerary, group size, expected walking and mobility demands, what is included, cancellation terms and whether the program is currently operating. Do not assume that a trip described as curated will match your pace or access needs without checking the details.

Domestic or international bucket-list trip
Let personal meaning guide the choice: a place tied to family, history, nature, food or a long-held interest can be more rewarding than a destination selected to meet an age-based idea of travel. For international trips, begin checking travel documents, health and access needs, transport connections and trip-protection terms well ahead of departure. Requirements and costs depend on the destination and dates, so verify them for your specific itinerary.
