Renesas’ RA2T1 is an active family of 64-MHz Arm Cortex-M23 microcontrollers designed to control one motor in compact products such as power tools, fans, vacuums and appliances. Its distinguishing features are motor-control peripherals—simultaneous three-phase current sampling, complementary PWM generation and hardware overcurrent shutdown—not high-end processing power. It is a control component, not a complete motor drive.

What Renesas introduced

Renesas announced the RA2T1 group on July 9, 2025, as its first motor-control application-specific standard product (ASSP) in the RA2 Series based on Cortex-M23. The company named power tools, fans, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, printers and hair dryers as target applications. Renesas said the devices and its Flexible Software Package (FSP) were available at launch; that announcement does not establish current stock or delivery times. The family is listed as active, with product longevity shown through 2037. Renesas’ announcement and its RA2T1 product page provide the product details.

Why a motor-control MCU is different

A single electronically commutated motor still needs carefully timed switching, current feedback and fault response. In a cordless tool, for example, firmware must manage startup, changing load, speed regulation and stall conditions while respecting battery, inverter and motor limits. “Single motor” describes the number of controlled motors, not a simple control problem.

RA2T1 integrates peripherals that can reduce the need for separate timing and protection logic in some designs. The benefit is a more purpose-built control platform; it does not guarantee fewer components, better efficiency or lower system cost. Those outcomes depend on the motor, power stage, sensing circuit, board design and firmware.

What the RA2T1 integrates

Three-phase current sampling

The 12-bit ADC has three sample-and-hold circuits, allowing three phase-current measurements to be captured simultaneously instead of sequentially. When currents change quickly during a PWM cycle, measurements taken at the same instant can provide more coherent feedback to the control algorithm. The feature alone does not guarantee lower torque ripple, improved efficiency or quieter operation: shunt arrangement, amplifier response, layout, sampling point and firmware all matter. Renesas describes this feature in its motor-control application brief.

PWM generation and dead time

The timer supports complementary PWM outputs, automatic dead-time insertion and asymmetric PWM generation. In a three-phase inverter, dead time helps prevent a high-side and low-side switch in the same leg from conducting at once. Too little risks shoot-through; too much can distort current and complicate low-speed control. The feature reduces implementation work, but engineers still need to validate timing against the chosen gate driver and power devices.

Hardware overcurrent response

High-speed comparators can feed a POEG (Port Output Enable) path that disables PWM outputs when an overcurrent condition is detected. This provides a local hardware response path; it is not a complete safety system. Firmware still needs defined behavior for fault logging, restart or lockout, and user notification. The wider product also needs appropriate protection for conditions such as excess bus voltage, overheating, gate-driver faults and mechanical stalls.

Core, memory and electrical characteristics

Renesas lists these family-level characteristics. Confirm the exact ordering code and datasheet before designing around a feature, since specifications and available pins can vary by device and package.

Characteristic RA2T1 family information
CPU 64-MHz Arm Cortex-M23
Program flash Up to 64 KB
SRAM Up to 8 KB
Data flash 2 KB
ADC 12-bit, with three sample-and-hold circuits
Supply voltage 1.6–5.5 V

Packages 24-pin QFN through 48-pin LQFP/HWQFN variants
Interfaces SCI/UART, simple SPI/I²C, SPI and I²C
Product status and longevity Active; longevity shown through 2037

These figures describe the MCU, not the motor supply. The 1.6–5.5 V operating range is not a motor-bus rating; the inverter and its components must be chosen for the product’s bus voltage and current. See the RA2T1 part information and verify the individual device documentation.

Package size is only one part of board size

The family includes a 24-pin QFN option and larger 32- and 48-pin packages. A smaller package can save MCU board area, but it may leave fewer pins for sensors, communications, controls and debugging. QFN assembly and inspection can also be more demanding than LQFP. The package does not set the footprint of the inverter, heatsinking, isolation, EMI filtering or connectors, which may dominate the finished board.

How to evaluate RA2T1

Renesas supports the family through FSP and motor-control tools including Renesas Motor Workbench and QE for Motor. The MCK-RA2T1 page lists sample projects for 120-degree conduction and sensorless vector control. These are different control approaches, not interchangeable guarantees of suitability for every motor: select based on the motor, sensing, performance target and application requirements.

  1. Choose the device: compare ordering codes, package, pin count, memory and required interfaces using the RA2T1 product page and device documentation.
  2. Get the hardware materials: use the documentation and design files linked from the MCK-RA2T1 evaluation-kit page. The MCB-RA2T1 CPU board is an alternative starting point for teams with separate motor-control hardware.
  3. Bring up a known motor conservatively: set safe voltage and current limits before enabling the inverter, and check current-sense polarity and gain.
  4. Verify timing and shutdown: confirm ADC sampling occurs at the intended point in the PWM cycle, validate dead time with the actual power stage, and test that an overcurrent event disables switching as intended.
  5. Tune and test under varied conditions: use Motor Workbench as appropriate, then test startup, stalls, load changes, rapid deceleration, thermal behavior and fault recovery before optimizing sound, efficiency or runtime.

This is a hardware-specific engineering evaluation, not a plug-and-play setup. A reference project cannot by itself establish that a production design is validated.

What the MCK-RA2T1 kit includes

Renesas describes the MCK-RA2T1 as an evaluation kit for permanent-magnet synchronous motors, including BLDC motors. Its listed equipment includes an RA2T1 CPU board, a three-phase inverter board rated at 48 V/10 A, an on-board debugger for programming RA2T1 flash, one- and three-shunt current-sensing support, overcurrent detection, support for Hall sensors, encoders and inductive position sensors, and a motor with accessories. The kit is compatible with Motor Workbench. The 48-V/10-A figure describes the evaluation inverter board—not the RA2T1 MCU or a universal rating for a production design. Details are on the official kit page.

What the MCU does not replace

An RA2T1 design still needs a suitable power stage and, where applicable, gate drivers; current and voltage sensing; power management; board-level protection; and a motor-control algorithm. Engineers must also address regenerative energy that can raise the DC bus during deceleration, thermal limits, electromagnetic compatibility, and product-specific certification. A hardware PWM shutdown can respond to a detected event, but it does not establish system-level safety compliance or ensure every fault is covered.

How to judge the fit

RA2T1 may fit when

  • The product controls one BLDC or PMSM motor and is constrained by cost or board area.
  • Simultaneous phase-current sampling and hardware-timed PWM protection are useful to the design.
  • The selected device has enough memory, pins and interfaces for control, diagnostics and product logic.
  • The team is prepared to develop with Renesas’ software and tools and validate its own motor, inverter and fault behavior.

Consider another approach when

  • The design needs several independently controlled motors, demanding servo or robotics performance, or substantially more compute, memory or communications.
  • The application needs extensive graphics, connectivity or machine-learning workloads on the same MCU.
  • The team requires a second-source ecosystem or a toolchain unrelated to Renesas.
  • A more integrated motor-driver IC better matches a simple application where minimizing external circuitry matters more than algorithm flexibility.

A general-purpose MCU may offer a broader ecosystem or more compute but can require additional circuitry and firmware for motor timing and protection. Renesas also identifies RX and RL78 motor-control families as alternatives within its portfolio; existing code, performance requirements and design history may make those more suitable. Higher-end motor-control MCUs or DSPs may serve more demanding control workloads, at the cost of potentially greater software complexity and resource use. Choose by evaluating the whole control system, not the processor in isolation.

Questions to settle before committing

  • Motor and control method: Is the motor a BLDC/PMSM, and will the design use sensored, six-step or sensorless control?
  • Power stage: What bus voltage and phase current must the inverter handle? These are not specified by the MCU’s supply range.
  • Sensing and timing: Does the chosen one-, two- or three-shunt arrangement work with the amplifier, ADC timing and PWM strategy?
  • Compute and package: Is 64 MHz and the available memory sufficient, and does the selected package expose enough pins?
  • Protection: Does the hardware fault path meet the product’s needs, and are safe firmware recovery and system-level protections defined?
  • Lifecycle and total cost: Check current package availability and supply terms, and account for the inverter, sensors, development, validation and certification—not only MCU cost.
