Reddit’s International Growth Plan: Why the UK, India, Brazil and Philippines Matter

Reddit already had nearly as many international daily users as U.S. users in Q3 2024, but international revenue was far lower. Its strategy focused on translation, local communities and country-level advertising.

Reddit’s international challenge was not finding an audience. In the third quarter of 2024, the platform reported 49.0 million international daily active uniques (DAUq), slightly more than its 48.2 million U.S. DAUq. The problem was monetization: international revenue was $60.4 million, compared with $288.0 million in U.S. revenue.

That gap explains Reddit’s focus on the United Kingdom, India, Brazil and the Philippines. The company was trying to make Reddit more locally relevant through translation, recommendations, community development and local advertising infrastructure, then convert substantial non-U.S. usage into advertising revenue.

The 2024 strategy in context

The four-market focus came from a November 28, 2024 TechCrunch report based largely on comments from Reddit COO Jen Wong. It described an acceleration of an existing internationalization effort, rather than a brand-new overseas expansion.

Reddit’s earlier company update said people from more than 150 countries had used the platform during the preceding year. It also described international offices, local sales teams, an entity in Singapore and a London office that had already been open for three years by November 2023.

Wong said more than half of Reddit’s user base was outside the United States during the period discussed. That audience scale did not translate into a comparable share of revenue, making international monetization the strategic objective.

Why Reddit selected these four markets

Market Strategic rationale What Reddit publicly disclosed
United Kingdom Large English-speaking online population, mature digital advertising market, cultural similarities with the U.S. and a practical base for European operations. Reddit had an established London office and treated the UK as an early international base. No specific claim that it was the company’s fastest-growing market was established.
India Very large internet population, extensive language diversity and strong interest communities around cricket, Bollywood and other locally salient subjects. Wong singled India out as an important opportunity. Reddit cited Bollywood and the Cricket World Cup as examples of relevant discovery. No India-specific DAU or revenue figure was disclosed in the cited coverage.
Brazil A major Latin American internet market and a Portuguese-language opportunity requiring locally relevant communities, moderation and advertising. Brazil was named as a priority market, but the available public comments did not provide country-specific user, revenue, office or advertiser figures.
Philippines English capability, high social-media engagement and potential for community participation and local advertiser demand. The Philippines was identified as a priority, although public comments supplied less market-specific detail than for India.

The evidence therefore supports a strategic rationale, not a ranking of Reddit’s four largest international markets. India received the most specific executive commentary; Brazil and the Philippines were named priorities without equivalent operating detail.

How Reddit planned to grow outside the U.S.

Machine-learning translation

Reddit said it planned to extend its machine-learning translation feature to more than 30 countries through 2025. Translation can help users discover posts outside their primary language, join communities, use search and recommendations more effectively, and give advertisers a way to reach local-language audiences.

It is not a complete localization solution. Machine translation may struggle with slang, humor, political or religious context, safety-sensitive language and moderation decisions. Availability and quality can vary by language, product surface, market and app version, and the cited announcement did not establish that all four priority markets received identical support at the same time.

Localized discovery

Reddit described a Communities tab that could recommend communities using local and country trends, culturally relevant subjects, popular subreddits and major events. Examples included Bollywood, cricket and European football.

This addresses a problem that language support alone cannot solve. Someone may understand English yet still find Reddit unhelpful if the product does not surface communities connected to local sports, entertainment, culture or daily life.

Local teams and sales coverage

International growth required two parallel investments:

  • Audience infrastructure: translation, local recommendations, community experiences and language-aware support.
  • Commercial infrastructure: local sales teams, advertiser relationships and country-specific campaign support.

Local sales coverage matters because a global advertising product does not automatically create local demand. Agencies and businesses need sales contacts, suitable creative guidance, measurement and confidence that Reddit can reach relevant audiences in their markets.

Local advertising

Wong said Reddit planned to expand local advertising into additional countries. The logic is straightforward: more local users create more local inventory, community context can improve relevance, and local teams can recruit advertisers that may not buy a global campaign.

However, audience growth does not guarantee U.S.-level advertising yields. Advertising-market maturity, purchasing power, campaign measurement, advertiser familiarity and available local-language inventory can all affect revenue per user.

The audience–revenue gap

Reddit’s third-quarter 2024 results show the central business problem:

Q3 2024 measure United States International Total or comparison
DAUq 48.2 million 49.0 million 97.2 million globally
Revenue $288.0 million $60.4 million $348.4 million total
Year-over-year revenue growth 70% 57% Not stated as a single geographic rate

International DAUq represented approximately 50.4% of global DAUq, while international revenue represented approximately 17.3% of total revenue. Reddit also reported $315.1 million in advertising revenue for the quarter, confirming that advertising was the dominant economic lever.

A simple derived comparison produces approximately $5.98 of quarterly revenue per U.S. DAUq ($288.0 million divided by 48.2 million) and $1.23 per international DAUq ($60.4 million divided by 49.0 million). The U.S. figure is therefore roughly 4.9 times higher on this limited comparison.

These are approximate calculations, not Reddit-reported ARPU figures. Revenue geography is not perfectly equivalent to user geography: Reddit says advertising revenue is assigned according to where ad impressions are delivered, while other revenue is based on the customer’s billing address.

Reddit’s November 2023 international update said about 20% of advertising revenue came from advertisers outside the U.S. That was meaningful international demand, but still a minority contribution.

Why international usage may monetize differently

  • Local advertiser depth: A large population may contain relatively few businesses actively buying Reddit campaigns.
  • Sales maturity: New country teams need time to build agency relationships, educate advertisers and support renewals.
  • Measurement and targeting: Advertisers may prefer platforms with more established local reporting, audience tools or attribution.
  • Traffic mix: Search-driven or logged-out visitors may generate impressions without becoming registered, participating members.
  • Pricing dynamics: Ad demand, purchasing power and competition can produce different CPMs and campaign economics across countries.
  • Inventory and context: Translation and discovery must produce healthy, locally relevant communities before advertisers have enough context-rich inventory to buy.

These are possible explanations for the observed gap, not individually disclosed causes. The reported numbers establish that international reach was much larger than international revenue in Q3 2024.

The operational risks

Translation without cultural fluency

Technical comprehension does not ensure natural or safe communication. Poor translation can distort humor, harassment, political discussion or crisis-related content, creating both user and moderation risks.

Community growth without community health

Reddit needs active local-language communities, not merely visitors who read English-language posts. Growth that relies on one major sporting or entertainment event may create a temporary traffic spike rather than durable membership and retention.

Moderation across more languages

More languages increase the need for language-specific moderators, faster abuse response and reliable enforcement. Safety systems can underperform when machine translation obscures context or when local political, religious and cultural disputes do not fit existing workflows.

Regulation and operating cost

Country-specific privacy, online-safety, content and advertising rules can raise costs or constrain product design. Local teams must balance consistent platform policies with legitimate regional differences.

Local advertising adoption

Advertisers may test Reddit without renewing if targeting, creative support or measurement does not match alternatives. A local sales presence is necessary but not sufficient to create a durable advertising market.

How to judge whether the strategy worked

Raw international users are only one measure. A credible scorecard should track:

  • International DAUq and WAUq, with logged-in and logged-out usage separated.
  • Retention, session frequency and participation rates in local-language communities.
  • The number, activity and health of local subreddits.
  • International revenue, revenue per DAUq and the share of revenue from non-U.S. advertisers.
  • Active local advertisers, campaign renewal and performance.
  • Translation usage, quality indicators and language coverage.
  • Moderation response times, spam rates, abuse reports and safety incidents by language.

Reddit’s investor-relations archive contains later 2025 and 2026 earnings materials. Any assessment published in 2026 should use those filings to verify outcomes rather than treating the 2024 plan as proof of success.

What this means for advertisers

Advertisers evaluating Reddit internationally should separate paid reach from organic community work. Reddit Ads is the relevant starting point for paid campaigns, while Reddit for Business provides business-facing guidance and case studies. Reddit Pro is aimed more at monitoring conversations and participating organically than at buying guaranteed distribution.

None of these products guarantees performance in a particular country. Campaign eligibility, targeting, budgets and measurement should be confirmed in the current business account and sales materials. Reddit may be useful for interest- and community-based campaigns, but broader networks can still offer greater mass reach or more mature cross-platform attribution.

Bottom line

Reddit’s 2024 international push was an effort to convert existing global reach into locally relevant communities and a more balanced advertising business. The UK offered an established English-speaking commercial base; India offered scale and culturally distinctive demand; Brazil offered a major Portuguese-language opportunity; and the Philippines offered an English-capable, highly social market.

The decisive test was not whether Reddit could attract people in those countries. It already had substantial international usage. The test was whether translation, discovery, local teams and advertising infrastructure could narrow the large gap between international audience share and international revenue.
