Raspberry Pi Shares Soared in Its 2024 IPO: What Happened

Raspberry Pi Holdings priced its June 2024 IPO at 280p a share. On June 11, during conditional trading on the London Stock Exchange, shares reached 392p and closed at 385p—38% above the offer price. The company was formally admitted to the LSE Main Market on June 14, 2024, so the “soar” was a specific historical debut, not a current market move.

What happened in Raspberry Pi’s IPO?

Raspberry Pi Holdings plc listed on the London Stock Exchange Main Market under the ticker RPI. The IPO price was 280p per ordinary share, implying an admission valuation of about £541.6 million. The London Stock Exchange said the placing raised £166 million; it also noted that the offer could reach £178.9 million if the over-allotment option were fully exercised. Those figures describe different outcomes, not interchangeable totals. Raspberry Pi’s IPO documents and the LSE listing announcement set out the terms.

The IPO was reported as oversubscribed. The LSE also awarded the company its Green Economy Mark, an exchange designation based on qualifying green revenues or products; it does not mean every Raspberry Pi product or the company as a whole has been certified as environmentally beneficial.

How much did the shares rise?

The reference point matters. The 392p intraday high was about 40% above the 280p offer price. Bloomberg reported a first-day close of 385p, about 38% above the offer price. Earlier reports quoted increases of roughly 31% or 32% while shares were trading around 365p–370p. They refer to different moments, rather than contradicting the closing figure. Sky News covered the intraday move; Bloomberg reported the close.

Trading on June 11 was conditional dealing ahead of formal admission and settlement, not the same stage as ordinary unconditional trading. A price gain from the offer price measures the market’s initial response to the IPO pricing; it does not establish the company’s intrinsic value or predict its longer-term share performance.

What does Raspberry Pi Holdings sell?

The listed company develops and sells small, low-cost computers, compute modules, accessories and semiconductor products, including its RP2040 microcontroller. Its products serve hobbyists and educators, but also commercial product developers and industrial and embedded-computing customers.

That commercial mix is important: Raspberry Pi was not simply a consumer hobbyist-board maker at the time of the IPO. In 2023, industrial and embedded applications accounted for 72% of unit sales, while enthusiast and education markets together accounted for 28%, according to FCA-hosted registration material. The company said it had sold more than 60 million computers and compute modules since commercial trading began and sold about 7.4 million units in 2023, according to the LSE announcement.

Contemporary coverage reported 2023 revenue of approximately $266 million and gross profit of approximately $66 million. Those are reported figures, not a substitute for checking the company’s prospectus for reporting currency, definitions and full financial statements. TechCrunch’s IPO coverage provides that contemporaneous reporting; the company’s IPO documents contain the formal financial information.

Why did investors respond positively?

The offering was priced at the top of its previously indicated range and was oversubscribed, both signs of strong demand during the IPO process. The company also brought a recognizable global brand, a large developer and enthusiast community, and substantial industrial and embedded-market exposure. Contemporary reporting described Raspberry Pi as profitable, which gave investors a different growth story from speculative technology listings without established profits.

Arm agreed to buy $35 million of shares as a cornerstone investor, subject to customary conditions, according to Arm’s filing. That participation indicated strategic interest, but it did not guarantee the stock’s performance. The debut also drew attention because London’s IPO market had been quiet: Sky News reported that 23 companies came to the UK market in 2023. That is contemporaneous context for the 2024 listing, not a measure of the market today.

How are the public company and Raspberry Pi Foundation different?

Raspberry Pi Holdings plc is the commercial company whose shares trade publicly. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is the educational and charitable organization associated with the brand and mission. The IPO did not turn the Foundation itself into a conventional for-profit listed company.

Raspberry Pi said the transaction generated proceeds for the Foundation as well as capital for the operating business. The Foundation retained a significant interest after the transaction, but the exact post-IPO ownership split should be read from the final prospectus rather than inferred from summaries. The company’s explanation is in its IPO announcement; the IPO documents contain the formal transaction details.

What was the IPO money intended to fund?

The LSE said net proceeds for the company were intended for engineering capital expenditure, supply-chain resilience and other general corporate purposes. Raspberry Pi described public-market access as a way to develop and produce more products faster. The Foundation’s share of proceeds was intended to support its longer-term educational and global-impact ambitions.

Keep the terms distinct when comparing figures: gross IPO proceeds are before fees; net proceeds are after fees; primary capital raised goes to the company; and secondary sales are shares sold by existing shareholders. The £166 million placing figure and the possible £178.9 million offer size with a fully exercised over-allotment option should not be treated as the same amount of net cash received by the company.

What should investors take from the first-day rise?

The pop showed strong initial demand at the offer price. It did not prove that the company was fairly valued at 385p, or that the shares would continue rising. Someone buying at the first-day close paid 105p more per share than the IPO price, before considering any transaction costs. A first-day move can reflect demand and the amount of stock available to trade as well as expectations about the business.

Business and execution risks

  • Industrial exposure: Commercial and embedded demand can support repeat business, but projects may be delayed and semiconductor demand can move with inventory and economic cycles. Customer concentration is another factor to assess in company filings.
  • Supply chain: Products depend on semiconductor manufacturing, components, logistics and capacity planning. The stated use of proceeds for resilience indicates why execution matters.
  • Community and commercial priorities: The enthusiast community helped build the brand, while public investors expect sustainable growth and returns. A stronger enterprise focus or pressure to improve margins could put tension on affordability, availability or the needs of individual users.
  • Popularity is not a financial forecast: A widely used product does not by itself establish future revenue, margins, cash flow or shareholder returns.

Trading and access considerations

RPI is a smaller company than major US technology stocks, so liquidity, spreads and price volatility may differ. Investors outside the UK also need to account for sterling exposure, broker access to the LSE, foreign-exchange charges and their own tax treatment. Broker availability, fees, account eligibility and fractional-share support vary by country and platform.

What the listing meant for London—and what it did not

Raspberry Pi was a recognizable British technology company choosing a domestic listing, and its strong debut offered a positive signal after a weak year for UK IPOs. It showed that a technology listing could attract substantial investor attention in London. One successful offering, however, cannot establish that London’s broader IPO challenges were solved or that other companies would receive the same reception.
