Rad Power Bikes Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 15, 2025, and initially said it planned to sell the business while continuing normal operations. That sale is no longer merely prospective: Life Electric Vehicles Holdings (Life EV) announced it completed a court-approved acquisition of the Rad brand and certain assets on March 5, 2026. The acquisition does not establish that every liability of the former company transferred to Life EV.

What happened to Rad Power Bikes?

Rad Power Bikes Inc., the Seattle-based electric-bike retailer, wholesaler and direct-to-consumer seller, filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Washington on December 15, 2025. The petition identifies the company and its business. Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy process that can allow a company to reorganize or pursue a sale under court supervision; in this case, Rad said it was seeking a sale while operating in the ordinary course.

“Rad Power Bikes filed for Chapter 11 protection as part of a process to complete a sale of the company within the next 45–60 days,” a Rad spokesperson said in a statement reported by GeekWire on December 16, 2025. That was the company’s stated aim at the time, not the final transaction result.

Who bought Rad Power Bikes?

Life EV was reported as the winning bidder at the January 2026 auction, with Retrospec (Xander Bicycle Corp.) named as the backup bidder. The winning bid still awaited court approval at the time of GeekWire’s auction report. Life EV later announced that it completed the court-approved acquisition on March 5, 2026.

According to Life EV’s announcement, the purchased assets included the Rad Power Bikes brand, intellectual property, inventory and certain operating assets. Life EV said U.S. retail operations would continue under the Rad brand. A brand and asset acquisition does not by itself show that all debts, obligations or other liabilities of Rad Power Bikes Inc. passed to the buyer.

What the bankruptcy filing disclosed

The petition estimated Rad’s assets at $10 million to $50 million and liabilities at $50 million to $100 million. GeekWire reported more specific figures from the filing of approximately $32 million in assets and nearly $73 million in liabilities. The petition’s broad ranges and the reported figures are estimates, not a statement that creditors will recover a particular amount.

Rad’s filing reported gross revenue of $129.8 million in 2023, $103.8 million in 2024 and $63.3 million through the 2025 filing period. These are figures disclosed by Rad in its bankruptcy filing; the 2025 figure covers only the period through the filing, not a full year.

What happens to Rad warranties and gift cards?

Life EV said it planned customer programs honoring “certain warranties and gift cards” under the purchase agreement. Its March 2026 announcement does not specify which products, purchase dates or claims qualify, or how customers should submit a claim. It therefore does not establish that every warranty or gift card issued by the former company will be honored.

For a specific warranty or gift-card question, contact the current Rad customer-support channel and ask for the applicable eligibility terms and claim process. Do not assume that ownership of the brand alone determines whether a particular obligation transferred.

Which Rad Power Bikes batteries should consumers stop using?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a safety warning dated November 24, 2025, concerning lithium-ion battery models RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y and HL-RP-S1304. The agency associated those batteries with RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, RadCity Step Thru 3, RadRover Step Thru 1, RadRunner 2, RadRunner 1, RadRunner Plus and RadExpand 5. The warning is specific to the listed battery models: do not assume every battery or every Rad bike is affected. Check the label on the battery and the CPSC notice.

CPSC says consumers should immediately remove and stop using the named batteries, dispose of them through local hazardous-waste procedures, and not sell or give them away. The agency warns against putting them in curbside or general battery recycling bins and advises contacting a local household hazardous-waste center first. CPSC reported 31 fire reports, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500. Some fires reportedly occurred when a battery was not charging, the e-bike was not being used, or the product was in storage.

The CPSC notice also reproduces Rad’s response that its Safe Shield batteries and semi-integrated batteries were not subject to the agency’s statement. That is Rad’s position as quoted by the regulator; check the battery’s actual model number against the CPSC notice rather than relying on the bike’s brand or a general battery description.
