Qualcomm had acquired HaloIPT, the technology’s original developer, in 2011 and pursued commercialization through automotive-supplier licensing deals before the sale. The transaction transferred Halo technology to a specialist in wireless EV charging; it did not establish that a consumer Halo charger was broadly available.
What Qualcomm sold—and who bought it
WiTricity acquired Qualcomm’s Halo wireless EV-charging technology in February 2019. The consideration was reported as an unspecified minority stake in WiTricity; the available reporting does not state the deal’s valuation or the exact size of that stake.
Halo was more than a pad placed on the garage floor. EE Times described it as an end-to-end wireless charging system encompassing power conversion, tuning, wireless power transfer, magnetics, control, communications and safety systems. Its intended use was to charge an electric vehicle after the driver parked over a wireless ground pad.
That distinction matters: the sale concerned a technology and intellectual-property portfolio, not a reported retail charger purchase. The transaction reporting does not establish current ownership of every related patent or identify a consumer Halo product that buyers can purchase.

How Halo moved from HaloIPT to Qualcomm and WiTricity
| Year | What happened | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | Qualcomm announced that it acquired substantially all of HaloIPT’s technology and other assets. It brought the HaloIPT team into Qualcomm’s European Innovation Development group. (Qualcomm announcement, 2011) | Qualcomm obtained the technology and team behind Halo. |
| 2016 | Qualcomm announced Halo wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC) licensing and technology-transfer arrangements with Lear and Preh. (Qualcomm announcements, 2016) | The suppliers were to develop and supply Halo-based systems to plug-in-hybrid and electric-vehicle manufacturers. |

| February 2019 | Qualcomm sold the Halo wireless EV-charging technology to WiTricity for an unspecified minority stake. (EE Times report, 2019) | Halo moved from Qualcomm to a company focused on wireless charging. |
What the supplier agreements show about commercialization
Lear and Preh
Qualcomm’s 2016 arrangement with Lear was a royalty-bearing license to develop, make and supply Halo-based WEVC systems, with Qualcomm providing technical and engineering support. The 2016 Preh announcement described a similar plan to develop, make and supply systems for plug-in-hybrid and electric-vehicle manufacturers.
Nichicon
The 2017 Nichicon license was directed at development, manufacture and supply for Asian electric-vehicle and plug-in-hybrid manufacturers. Together, these agreements show that Qualcomm pursued an automotive supplier route to market before selling Halo; they do not by themselves establish how many vehicles received the technology or whether it reached mass-market production.

Why WiTricity wanted Halo
EE Times reported that WiTricity said the acquisition would take its portfolio to more than 1,500 wireless-charging patents and patent applications. That figure is WiTricity’s portfolio claim as reported by EE Times in 2019, not a count of Halo patents alone.
The report also said WiTricity viewed the combined portfolio as a way to simplify interoperability for automakers. For vehicle makers and suppliers, alignment among technologies and systems can matter as much as the presence of a charging pad: a wireless charging system has to work as a coordinated package of power transfer, control, communications and safety functions.

How parking over a pad can charge an EV
In the Halo use case, a ground-side wireless pad and vehicle-side equipment form a charging system. After the driver parks over the pad, the system transfers power wirelessly to the vehicle. Halo’s described scope included the conversion and tuning of power, the transfer hardware and magnetics, plus control, communications and safety systems. The cited accounts describe that system concept; they do not specify a single universal parking tolerance, charging rate or efficiency figure.

- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
For anyone evaluating wireless EV charging today, Halo’s history is best read as an automotive technology and intellectual-property transaction. A product-level comparison would need current information on vehicle integration and compatibility, charging power and efficiency, alignment tolerance and safety controls, interoperability, installation needs, supplier or automaker deployment, and infrastructure cost; the transaction sources do not provide a current comparison on those measures.
