Qualcomm Q1 FY2024 Revenue Rises 5% to $9.935 Billion as Handsets Rebound

Qualcomm reported $9.935 billion in revenue for its fiscal first quarter of 2024, up 5% year over year, with revenue and earnings above the high end of its prior guidance. The quarter ended December 24, 2023, and the results were released January 31, 2024. The improvement was led by handset sales and record automotive revenue, while Internet of Things (IoT) and licensing revenue declined.

What Qualcomm reported for fiscal Q1 2024

Qualcomm’s “Q1 2024” was its fiscal quarter ended December 24, 2023—not the January-to-March calendar quarter. Its January 31, 2024 earnings release reported the following results compared with the year-earlier quarter:

Measure Q1 FY2024 Year-over-year change
GAAP revenue $9.935 billion +5%
GAAP net income $2.767 billion +24%
Non-GAAP net income $3.101 billion +16%
GAAP diluted EPS $2.46 +24%
Non-GAAP diluted EPS $2.75 +16%

The prior-year comparable revenue was $9.463 billion. Qualcomm said revenue and earnings exceeded the high end of its own guidance; that is not the same as a comparison with analyst consensus estimates. The reported $9.935 billion is the precise GAAP revenue figure behind rounded headlines of $9.9 billion. Qualcomm’s SEC-filed earnings release provides the results and comparisons.

Handsets drove most of the immediate improvement

Qualcomm’s QCT semiconductor business recorded $6.687 billion in handset revenue, up 16% year over year. Handsets were by far its largest reported product category and the principal driver of the quarter’s improvement. That rebound is meaningful, but it also leaves the result exposed to smartphone demand, product mix, and the timing of large customers’ launches and orders.

Automotive grew quickly from a smaller base

Automotive revenue reached $598 million, up 31% year over year. Qualcomm described it as a record quarterly automotive result. The growth supports the company’s effort to expand beyond phones, but automotive remained much smaller in absolute dollars than handset revenue.

IoT weakness kept the result from being broad-based

QCT’s IoT revenue was $1.138 billion, down 32% year over year. That decline is a significant counterpoint to the handset and automotive gains: diversification is a strategic direction, not proof that every business line was growing in this quarter.

QCT and QTL reflect different businesses

Qualcomm reports two principal segments. QCT is its semiconductor operation, selling Snapdragon platforms, processors, modems, radio-frequency and power-management components, wireless-connectivity products, and related technology into handset, automotive, and IoT markets. QTL is its technology-licensing business, based on its cellular patent portfolio and licensing arrangements. Chip revenue is more directly exposed to shipments, inventory, and device demand; licensing revenue follows a different model tied to licensing activity and licensees’ sales. Qualcomm’s Form 10-Q for the quarter describes its businesses.

Reportable segment Q1 FY2024 revenue Q1 FY2023 revenue Year-over-year change
QCT semiconductor $8.423 billion $7.892 billion +7%
QTL licensing $1.460 billion $1.524 billion -4%
Total Qualcomm $9.935 billion $9.463 billion +5%

The segment figures are reported segment revenues; they should not be treated as a simple exact addition to consolidated revenue. QCT’s growth more than offset QTL’s decline in the reported total.

Earnings rose faster than revenue

Revenue increased 5%, while GAAP earnings before taxes rose 25%, net income rose 24%, and diluted EPS rose 24%. In QCT, earnings before taxes increased 19% and the EBT margin expanded from 28% to 31%. QTL’s EBT fell 3%, even as its EBT margin edged up from 73% to 74%. The gap between sales and profit growth shows that the quarter’s improvement was also reflected in profitability and segment mix, not just higher revenue.

Q2 guidance pointed to a step down from Q1

For fiscal Q2 2024, Qualcomm forecast total revenue of $8.9 billion to $9.7 billion. Its segment and diluted EPS ranges were:

Fiscal Q2 2024 guidance Range

QTL revenue $1.2 billion–$1.4 billion
GAAP diluted EPS $1.73–$1.93
Non-GAAP diluted EPS $2.20–$2.40

The revenue range was below Q1’s actual revenue. Qualcomm cited normal quarterly seasonality and expected changes in product and customer timing; the guidance did not imply a straight-line acceleration from the December quarter.

Strategic diversification was an opportunity, not the quarter’s revenue mix

Management highlighted automotive, PCs, extended reality, industrial IoT, connectivity, low-power computing, and on-device generative AI as areas for expansion. Those priorities describe the company’s strategic ambitions; they should not be confused with evidence that these categories already outweighed handset sales in Q1. The reported numbers still show handsets as the dominant QCT business, with automotive growing strongly and IoT contracting. Qualcomm’s earnings announcement sets out management’s framing.

Capital returns and business risks

Qualcomm said it returned approximately $1.7 billion to stockholders during the quarter: $895 million in cash dividends, or $0.80 per share, and $784 million in share repurchases representing approximately 6 million shares. These distributions are relevant to shareholders, but do not change the operating mix behind the revenue result.

The company’s stated risk factors include dependence on a limited number of customers and licensees, premium-tier device demand, customer vertical integration, China concentration and U.S.–China trade or national-security tensions, third-party supplier reliance, patent and licensing disputes, intense competition, rapid technological change, and semiconductor-cycle volatility. These risks help explain why one quarter of handset recovery is not enough to establish a durable, broad-based turnaround.

How to read the result

Qualcomm’s fiscal Q1 2024 was a handset-led improvement, strengthened by continued automotive growth and faster profit than revenue growth. It was not a uniform expansion: IoT fell sharply, licensing revenue slipped, and management’s next-quarter revenue range anticipated a sequential slowdown. The fairest reading is a meaningful sign of recovery in the core handset business, not proof that Qualcomm had exited its cycle or that its diversification strategy was already delivering broad growth.
