Puppet Labs raised $5 million in a Series B venture round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers on July 19, 2010. True Ventures and Radar Partners also participated. Puppet Labs said the financing brought its total funding to more than $7 million and would help it expand its engineering team.

How much did Puppet Labs raise from Kleiner Perkins?

The 2010 Series B was a $5 million round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. The announcement identified True Ventures and Radar Partners as participating investors. Puppet Labs reported that the new financing put its total funding above $7 million. Puppet Labs’ July 19, 2010 announcement is the primary source for those figures.

When did Kleiner Perkins invest, and what was the money for?

The company announced the investment on July 19, 2010. Puppet Labs said it would use the proceeds to build out its engineering team as it addressed demand for more consistent management of growing data centers and distributed or cloud infrastructure.

At the time, Puppet Labs described Puppet as an open-source configuration-management and data-center automation framework. It was intended to replace repeated, manually written configuration scripts with reusable automation. Puppet 2.6, which the company described as a major upgrade focused on enterprise environments, was announced on the same day.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

The financing announcement documents the round’s size, named investors, the company’s stated use of proceeds, and how Puppet Labs characterized its software. Comments in the release from Kleiner Perkins and Radar Partners praising the company’s opportunity were investor views, not independent evidence of market position or customer results.
