It lets users control their own keys, offers web and mobile access, and allows Proton Wallet users to send Bitcoin using an email address. The wallet is free to create according to Proton’s current support documentation, but self-custody means Proton cannot reverse a payment or restore Bitcoin when recovery credentials are lost.
What Proton released
Proton introduced Proton Wallet as its first cryptocurrency product on July 24, 2024. The launch supported Bitcoin only and described availability for web, iOS and Android. Proton positioned it as a privacy-focused wallet within the same ecosystem as Proton Mail, VPN, Drive and Pass—not as an exchange or hosted balance.
Proton had accepted Bitcoin during its 2014 crowdfunding campaign, but the wallet does not create a new type of Bitcoin transaction. Its main consumer distinction is combining conventional self-custody with Proton’s encrypted account infrastructure and an email-based sending workflow.
Launch coverage is available from TechCrunch. Proton’s current product page describes the wallet as open source and end-to-end encrypted at proton.me/wallet.

What self-custody means
In a self-custodial wallet, the user controls the private keys and wallet seed phrase. Proton does not hold a pooled customer balance like a centralized exchange and cannot authorize a transaction for you. Bitcoin can generally be restored in another compatible wallet with the wallet’s seed phrase.
That control is also the principal risk. A confirmed Bitcoin payment is normally irreversible. Proton cannot recover coins sent to the wrong address, and it cannot act as a custodian if both your account-recovery options and wallet seed phrase are gone.
Self-custody is not anonymity. Bitcoin transactions remain visible on a public blockchain. Address reuse, exchange records, device compromise and transaction patterns can still connect activity to a person.
How Proton’s recovery methods differ
Proton documents two separate recovery mechanisms. Confusing them can result in a wallet that appears restored while the underlying Bitcoin remains inaccessible.

| Credential | What it restores | Critical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Proton account recovery phrase | Encrypted Proton account data, including wallets stored in that account, after a forgotten account password | It is not a substitute for the wallet’s on-chain seed phrase |
| Wallet seed phrase | The Bitcoin wallet and its on-chain funds in another compatible wallet | Anyone who obtains it can control the funds |
| Optional wallet passphrase | An additional secret for a wallet created with that option | Proton says it is not stored and cannot be recovered; it cannot be changed after creation |
Write recovery information down and protect it from fire, theft and unauthorized access. Do not enter a seed phrase into a support form, unsolicited website or message. A screenshot, ordinary email or cloud note can expose the keys to an account compromise.

How “Bitcoin via Email” works
Bitcoin via Email is a convenience layer, not Bitcoin traveling through email. The email identifies the recipient; the actual transaction settles on the Bitcoin network.
- Open Proton Wallet on the web or mobile app.
- Select the gear icon beside the relevant wallet.
- Open the Bitcoin account settings.
- Enable Receive Bitcoin via Email.
- Choose an eligible email address.
A Proton Wallet user can then select that address when sending BTC. Eligible addresses can include a Proton Mail address, a custom-domain address or the external address used to create the Proton account. The recipient must remain logged in and active in Proton Wallet for the address pool to continue generating new addresses. Proton says creating a new Proton Mail address specifically for this feature is a paid-plan feature.

If the recipient has not enabled the feature, Proton may send an invitation. Anyone who does not use it can continue sending to a normal Bitcoin address. Proton’s current instructions are at proton.me/support/wallet-bitcoin-via-email.
What privacy benefit the email feature provides
Proton says each Bitcoin via Email transaction uses a different address from a pool of unused addresses. That reduces address reuse and makes it harder to connect every payment to one publicly posted address. Proton also says email-linked addresses are signed with the email address’s PGP private key so the receiving wallet can verify the address, while private messages attached to transactions are end-to-end encrypted within Proton’s system.
These measures do not hide the resulting Bitcoin transactions from the public blockchain. An exchange, merchant, recipient or blockchain-analysis company may still link activity through identity checks, timing, amounts, address transfers or other information. Verify the recipient carefully: a familiar email interface does not make a Bitcoin payment reversible.
How to create and secure a wallet
- Create or sign in to a Proton account.
- Open the app or wallet.proton.me, choose a display currency and select Create new wallet. The documented creation path is described at proton.me/support/wallet-create-delete-wallet.
- Use a strong, unique account password and enable two-factor authentication.
- Back up both the Proton account recovery phrase and every wallet seed phrase before depositing meaningful funds.
- Optionally enable Bitcoin via Email for the Bitcoin account you will use.
- Receive a small test amount, then verify the balance and transaction before moving a larger sum.
- Before sending, check the recipient, address, address format, network fee and amount on the device you trust.
Proton says new Bitcoin accounts default to Native SegWit, with an option to change the address type for compatibility. Confirm that the destination service supports the chosen format; when uncertain, use a test transaction. Wallet deletion is permanent unless you retain its seed phrase and recreate or import it. Multiple wallets and accounts are available subject to Proton plan limits. Details are documented at proton.me/support/wallet-create-btc-account and proton.me/support/wallet-create-delete-wallet.

Buying Bitcoin inside Proton Wallet
Proton’s current support page lists Banxa and Ramp as third-party on-ramp partners. Proton provides the wallet connection; those providers control their own identity checks, payment methods, limits, exchange-rate spreads, fees, regional availability and settlement times. The final quote—not the mere presence of an on-ramp in the app—is the amount to compare.
Provider information is available at Banxa and Ramp Network. Availability can vary by country and by payment or compliance profile.

| Proton can provide | Proton cannot provide |
|---|---|
| Wallet software, encrypted account infrastructure and security tools | Reversal of a confirmed Bitcoin transaction |
| Bitcoin via Email address generation and verification | Recovery of funds when the seed phrase and recovery options are lost |
| Support, account recovery features and third-party on-ramp connections | Protection if a user discloses a seed phrase or approves a fraudulent payment |
| Open-source code and the documented wallet interface | Guaranteed confirmation speed regardless of fee or network congestion |
Proton says wallet keys, seed phrases, wallet and account names, and transaction metadata are encrypted on the device so its servers cannot decrypt them. That design does not protect a compromised phone, computer, Proton account or browser session.

Who Proton Wallet suits
- Proton users who want a simple Bitcoin self-custody interface.
- Beginners who value an email-based transfer option and integrated account-security tools.
- Users who want open-source software and the ability to restore on-chain Bitcoin in another compatible wallet.
- People holding a spending balance rather than all of their long-term savings online.
When another option may fit better
- Hardware wallet: Ledger (ledger.com) or Trezor (trezor.io) can isolate signing keys in dedicated hardware, at the cost of purchase, setup and another recovery process.
- Advanced Bitcoin software: Electrum (electrum.org) offers a Bitcoin-focused interface with granular controls that may suit technical users.
- Another mobile or desktop wallet: Blockstream Green (blockstream.com/green) provides a different Bitcoin wallet and security model.
- Exchange: Coinbase (coinbase.com) may be more convenient for buying, selling and trading multiple assets, but the exchange generally controls the underlying private keys.
Proton Wallet is not documented here as a multi-asset, Lightning-focused, trading, lending or institutional-custody platform. Readers needing those functions should evaluate a product designed for them rather than assuming Bitcoin self-custody covers every use case.
Common failure modes
Wrong email or address
Send a small test amount first and verify the destination through a trusted channel. Bitcoin’s email-style presentation does not add a chargeback or undo function.
Compromised Proton account
Use a unique password, two-factor authentication, recovery methods, phishing-resistant habits and device security. Never provide a seed phrase to support staff or a website. Proton lists additional controls such as biometrics, amount masking and Proton Sentinel in its protection guidance.
Importing an old wallet
Importing is primarily a recovery method. If another service exposed the old seed phrase, importing it does not make that seed trustworthy; when the goal is simply to fund Proton Wallet, Proton recommends sending BTC to a new receive address. See proton.me/support/wallet-import-wallet.
On-ramp delays or unexpected cost
Identity checks, rejected payments, regional restrictions, provider fees and exchange-rate spreads can reduce the amount received or delay settlement. Compare the provider’s complete final quote.
Verdict
Proton Wallet is a credible, privacy-oriented way to begin Bitcoin self-custody, especially for existing Proton users. Its email workflow reduces address-copying friction and Proton’s address rotation can improve privacy against simple address-reuse tracking. The trade-off is unchanged by the polished interface: you still control the keys, the blockchain remains public, and losing the right recovery credential can mean losing the Bitcoin. Treat Proton Wallet as a convenient software wallet—not a replacement for an exchange when trading, or for dedicated cold storage when protecting a substantial long-term reserve.
