Proton Pass Plus Price Cut: What Changed and Is It Still a Deal?

Proton Pass Plus’s announced annual price fell by about 50% in January 2024, but conflicting Proton pricing signals mean buyers should verify the current and renewal price.

Proton announced a roughly 50% cut to Proton Pass Plus’s annual-plan price on January 25, 2024: from $3.99 to $1.99 per month when billed annually. That made the plan’s annualized cost $23.88 instead of $47.88. It is a historical price announcement, not confirmation of today’s price: Proton’s public pages show inconsistent figures, so check the checkout total and renewal price before subscribing.

What changed in the Proton Pass Plus price cut?

Proton said the reduction applied to annual Proton Pass Plus subscriptions and covered both new and existing customers. Existing subscribers may have needed to follow Proton’s instructions to switch to the updated price; the announcement does not mean past charges were automatically refunded. The figures below are the monthly equivalents of annual billing, not month-to-month prices.

Annual-plan price Before Announced January 25, 2024
Monthly equivalent $3.99 $1.99
Annualized cost $47.88 $23.88
Annual saving — $24
Reduction — About 50%

The arithmetic assumes the quoted monthly-equivalent rate applies for a full year: $3.99 × 12 versus $1.99 × 12. Proton’s announcement described this as a new annual-plan price reduction, rather than a limited-time coupon.

Why did Proton say it lowered the price?

Proton attributed the cut to rapid adoption of Pass, economies of scale, and lower server costs as its user base grew. The company also said it owns and operates its infrastructure instead of relying primarily on third-party cloud providers. These are Proton’s explanations for the pricing change, not independently verified cost findings. Proton’s price-change announcement has the company’s account.

Is $1.99 still the current price?

That is not established by the available public pricing signals. Proton’s Pass pricing page did not expose a dependable numeric price in the retrieved page text, while a Proton comparison with Bitwarden lists Pass Plus at $35.88 per year. That conflicts with the $23.88 annualized price in the 2024 announcement; the available pages do not resolve whether the comparison reflects a later price or outdated copy.

Before buying, check the amount charged today, the billing interval, taxes or currency shown at checkout, and the renewal price. Prices can also differ by country, app-store billing, purchase channel, or promotion. Do not assume that a signup discount will recur at renewal, or that an existing subscription will change without action.

What does Proton Pass Free include?

For many people, the free plan is enough. Proton lists unlimited logins, notes, credit cards, and devices; password import and generation; passkey support across devices; weak- and reused-password alerts; and access through browser, mobile, and desktop apps. Free also includes ten hide-my-email aliases. Proton’s pricing page says free and paid plans share the same basic privacy protection, including end-to-end encryption. Paying is not a requirement for safe password storage.

What does Pass Plus add?

Proton lists these Plus features in addition to its free offering. Availability and plan details should be confirmed on the current pricing page before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Unlimited hide-my-email aliases, custom-domain aliases, additional alias mailboxes, and the ability to initiate emails from aliases.
  • A built-in 2FA authenticator.
  • Secure vault sharing and secure link sharing.
  • Dark Web Monitoring, which can alert you to relevant exposure but does not prevent breaches, guarantee complete breach coverage, or fix compromised accounts.
  • File attachments, Emergency Access, and advanced account protection through Proton Sentinel.
  • Command-line interface access.

The practical reasons to pay are chiefly the added identity and account tools—not a claim of stronger basic encryption than the free plan. Proton lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Brave, plus web access and a command-line interface. See Proton’s download page.

When aliases are worth paying for

Unlimited hide-my-email aliases can help separate accounts for shopping, newsletters, and individual services, reducing the need to expose a primary address. Custom-domain aliases are most relevant if you already own a domain and want more control over address portability. If ten aliases are enough, this upgrade may not justify a subscription.

When built-in 2FA and sharing help

The integrated authenticator and secure sharing can simplify password and access management for a household. There is a trade-off: keeping passwords and authentication codes in one provider concentrates dependence on that account. Protect the Proton account with strong recovery methods and maintain a backup plan for critical accounts.

What to know about Emergency Access and downgrading

Emergency Access can support account-continuity planning. If you later downgrade to Free, Proton’s support page says only the first three 2FA items, ranked by creation date, will display codes. Check which authenticator entries matter most before changing plans. See Proton’s explanation of Pass plans.

How does Pass Plus compare with alternatives?

Prices below are the figures on the linked official pages, not a guarantee of what a buyer will see at checkout. In particular, Proton’s own pages disagree about Pass Plus pricing, while country, currency, taxes, purchase channel, and renewal terms can change the amount charged.

Service Official price signal Distinguishing point Trade-off
Proton Pass Plus 2024 announcement: $1.99/month equivalent, billed annually ($23.88 annualized). Proton’s comparison page lists $35.88 annually; current price needs checkout verification. Native hide-my-email aliases and integration with Proton services. Conflicting public price signals make the current cost uncertain.
Bitwarden Premium $19.80 annually on Bitwarden’s personal plans page. Low-cost premium option. Proton’s comparison says alias workflows generally use third-party services such as SimpleLogin or Addy.io rather than the same built-in Proton workflow.
1Password Individual $2.99/month billed annually, or $35.88 annualized, on 1Password’s pricing page. Password-management experience and family options. Costs more than Bitwarden Premium at the listed prices; Proton-specific services and alias integration are not its focus.

Bitwarden’s page also lists Families at $47.88 annually for up to six users; 1Password lists Families at $4.49 per month billed annually, or $53.88 annualized. These are useful household comparisons, but they do not establish that every plan has the same features or terms. Proton’s own comparison page is the source for its stated alias distinction: Proton’s Bitwarden comparison.

Which plan or service fits your needs?

Stay with Free for basic password management

Free is a sensible choice if you need unlimited password storage and device syncing, do not need more than ten aliases, and already have any authenticator or sharing tools you want. It is also the low-risk starting point if you are unsure whether Plus features will become part of your routine.

Choose Plus when its added tools solve a real need

Plus is most compelling if unlimited aliases are central to your workflow, you need secure sharing or Emergency Access, or you want Proton’s integrated 2FA and monitoring. It may also suit people who already use Proton services and value managing them within one privacy-focused account. Compare the live annual charge with alternatives rather than relying on the historical $1.99 figure.

Consider Proton Unlimited only if you will use the bundle

Proton Unlimited includes premium access across services such as Mail, VPN, Drive, Calendar, and Pass. It is worth comparing if you are already considering more than one Proton subscription. Check the current bundle and standalone checkout prices; the bundle is not automatically better value for someone who only needs a password manager.

Choose Bitwarden for a price-first decision

If minimizing ongoing cost is the priority and you do not need Proton’s native alias workflow, Bitwarden Premium’s listed $19.80 annual price is a lower official price signal. Be prepared to configure a third-party alias service if that feature matters to you.

Consider 1Password for its own workflow and family options

1Password may suit readers who prioritize its password-management and family-sharing experience and are comfortable with its listed annual-billing price. It is not the lowest-priced choice among the figures compared here.

Check the terms before subscribing

  • Confirm whether the price is annual or monthly billing and inspect the renewal amount.
  • Compare the web checkout with an app-store offer if you are purchasing through iOS or Android.
  • Look for taxes, currency conversion, and any promotional period in the final total.
  • Proton’s pricing page states that Pass Plus and Proton Unlimited premium subscriptions include a 30-day money-back guarantee; review the current terms at checkout.
