Proton launched Born Private on March 16, 2026. The program lets a parent or guardian reserve an available Proton Mail username for a child for up to 15 years, starting with a minimum $1 voluntary donation to the Proton Foundation. The crucial limitation is that the reservation is not an active inbox or email account: the child—or another authorized claimant—must activate it later with Proton’s certificate or voucher and the original reservation details.
Reserve an address through Proton’s official Born Private page. Check the live page immediately before paying because availability, wording and program details can change.
What Born Private is—and is not
Born Private is a Proton Mail username-reservation program, not a separate child email service or parental-control product. Proton says it is designed to help families preserve a future online identity before a child regularly needs email for school, games, apps, account recovery and other services. That is Proton’s stated rationale, not a guarantee that reserving one address will protect a child’s broader digital life.
The reservation keeps the selected username out of public registration for a maximum of 15 years. It does not give the family legal ownership, intellectual-property rights or a permanent entitlement to the name.

How to reserve an address
- Open the reservation page. Go to proton.me/mail/born-private/email and check whether the desired username is available.
- Enter the reservation information. Proton requires the email address used for the reservation. Keep access to it for the entire reservation period.
- Make the contribution. The minimum is $1. Proton describes this as a voluntary, non-refundable contribution to the Proton Foundation—not a Proton Mail subscription payment.
- Save the certificate or voucher. Proton issues the activation credential after reservation. Store it in a reputable password manager and, ideally, a secure offline location. Do not post the code or QR information publicly.
- Record the dates. Note the reservation date and the latest possible expiration date in a family records system.
What happens when the child is ready?
The reservation remains dormant until an authorized claimant starts activation. The claimant uses the certificate or code and the original reservation email address to create an eligible Proton account. Proton may request identity verification or review the certificate before allowing a claim.
Only after successful activation does the address become a normal Proton account governed by the Terms of Service, product rules and service tiers in effect at that time. The reservation does not guarantee a particular plan, storage allowance, feature set or price 15 years from now.
Is it an active inbox?
No. Proton’s legal terms state that reserving a username does not create or activate an account. Before activation, the address cannot function as an ordinary mailbox or receive messages. Proton’s campaign materials describe the reservation as sealed, with no messages, activity logs or profiling generated through use of the dormant inbox.

- FAST WITH LONG LASTING BATTERY - Features all-day up to 13-hour battery life, powerful hexa-core processor, with up to 4 GB RAM (2X more than 2022 release), 64 GB of internal storage for content, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately) for even more. It’s great for downloading games, videos, books, and music for their on-the-go educational entertainment.
That distinction matters financially and practically: the $1 does not buy email hosting for 15 years. It buys a time-limited reservation right and the process for a later claim.
What the program can protect—and what it cannot
What it can do
- Keep a selected Proton Mail username unavailable for public registration during the reservation period.
- Provide a future activation path without operating a mailbox during childhood.
- Support a family preference for Proton’s privacy-focused email ecosystem.
What it cannot do
- Prevent schools, apps, games, browsers, phones or websites from collecting data under their own policies.
- Prevent identity theft, account compromise or information that parents and children voluntarily publish.
- Guarantee that every future service accepts Proton Mail.
- Erase data already collected elsewhere.
- Provide parental controls, content filtering or family-management tools.
- Guarantee that a specific Proton plan, storage limit, feature or policy will still exist at activation.
Proton says Proton Mail uses end-to-end and zero-access encryption and that its applications are open source. Those are Proton’s product claims; they do not make Born Private a complete child-privacy strategy.
Risks parents should understand before paying
The name may become unsuitable
A child may later prefer a different name, nickname or identity. A reserved username is generally non-transferable, so speculative reservations can create unnecessary administrative work and donations.
Lost credentials can delay or prevent activation
Proton says a replacement can be requested if a voucher is misplaced, but its agreement preserves verification and refusal rights. Protect both the voucher and the original reservation email account.

Reservations expire
If the address is not claimed within 15 years, the reservation automatically expires and Proton may release the username. Renewal is not guaranteed, and Proton is not required to send renewal reminders unless applicable law requires it.
Proton can revoke or change the program
The agreement allows Proton to refuse, suspend, revoke or cancel a reservation for issues such as impersonation, infringement, fraud, abuse, policy violations, legal requirements or threats to service integrity. Proton may also modify, suspend or discontinue Born Private. The terms say active reservations remain valid for their already-purchased duration if the program is discontinued, subject to the agreement.
The child may not be the eventual claimant
“Authorized claimant” is a legal status, not simply whoever receives the voucher. Proton can review identity and eligibility when activation is attempted.
Is Born Private worth the $1?
It can be sensible when a specific username matters, the child is likely to need email within 15 years, and the family accepts a non-refundable contribution for a reservation rather than a working service. It is also more attractive to families who prefer a privacy-oriented provider and can reliably preserve credentials.

- SAVE UP TO $70: Get a full-feature tablet (not a toy) made for big kids ages 6–12, 6-month subscription Amazon Kids+ and a slim Kid-Friendly Case, versus items purchased separately.

It’s great for downloading games, videos, books, and music for their on-the-go educational entertainment.
It is a poor fit if the child needs an inbox now, the family wants parental controls, the address may later be inappropriate or misleading, or the household is unlikely to maintain access to the reservation email and voucher. Treat the $1 as a small, one-time contribution—not as the future cost of email.
Alternatives and their trade-offs
| Option | Best suited to | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Proton Mail account | A family needing an active mailbox now | Creates a live account immediately; it is not a dormant 15-year reservation. |
| Gmail and Google Family Link | Households prioritizing Android, school and Google integration | Emphasizes ecosystem and family-management tools, not username reservation. |
| Outlook and Family Safety | Windows, Microsoft 365, Xbox or school-managed environments | Strong ecosystem integration rather than Born Private’s reservation model. |
| Tuta Mail | Families seeking another privacy-focused provider | Conventional privacy email; the reviewed material does not establish an equivalent 15-year reservation. |
| Custom domain or domain registrar | Families wanting provider portability | More control, but recurring renewal costs and ongoing administration. |
What Proton’s survey shows
In a Proton-commissioned Toluna survey of 1,216 U.S. parents or legal guardians of children under 18, conducted between February and March 2026, Proton reported that 50% would be likely to reserve an encrypted email address and 56% would recommend such a tool. Proton also reported that 32% of children received a dedicated smartphone or tablet by age five and 71% had their own device by age 10.
These are company-commissioned survey results, not independent population estimates, and they do not demonstrate that Born Private improves privacy outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a reserved Born Private address receive email before activation?
No. Proton’s legal agreement says the reservation does not create or activate an account, so it is not an operational inbox until the authorized claimant completes activation.

Is the $1 a Proton Mail subscription?
No. It is a voluntary, non-refundable contribution to the Proton Foundation associated with reserving the username. Future email service is governed by the plans and policies available when the address is activated.
Does the child permanently own the reserved username?
No. Proton describes the reservation as a limited, non-exclusive, time-bound right. It does not confer ownership or a permanent entitlement.
The Bottom Line
Born Private is best understood as a low-cost, 15-year reservation for a Proton Mail username—not a preactivated child account, permanent ownership or complete privacy solution. Reserve one when the name has real long-term value and your family can safeguard the voucher and original reservation email.
