Proton Drive for Business launched on August 27, 2024—not in 2026. It has since grown from encrypted business storage and sharing into a service that also includes Proton Docs and Sheets, business administration, and a command-line interface for Linux. It is a credible option for teams that prioritize provider-blind file privacy, but it is not an automatic replacement for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
What Proton Drive for Business is
Proton introduced dedicated business plans in 2024, rather than simply asking companies to share personal accounts. The business offering includes organization-level user administration and business plans for storage, sharing, and collaborative work.
Proton distinguishes Drive Professional, which centers on Drive, from Workspace plans that bundle Drive with other Proton services. Enterprise arrangements are customizable. These are separate from Proton’s personal and family plans.
Plans at a glance
| Plan | What it includes | Who it may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Drive Professional | 1 TB per user, Drive storage and sharing, Proton Docs and Sheets, and 365-day version history, according to Proton’s business-plan guide. | Teams primarily seeking business file storage and collaboration. |
| Workspace Standard | Drive Professional plus Proton Mail, Calendar, Pass, VPN, and Meet; Proton lists video meetings for up to 100 people. | Businesses considering a broader privacy-oriented service bundle. |
| Workspace Premium | Workspace Standard plus 3 TB per user, Lumo AI, up to 20 custom email domains, and meetings for up to 250 people, according to Proton’s plan guide. | Teams needing more storage and the expanded bundle. |
| Enterprise | Custom arrangements; Proton does not provide a fixed feature list or price in its general plan guide. | Larger organizations that need a tailored arrangement. |
Proton’s pricing page advertises a 14-day free trial. Exact current prices are not stated here: amounts can depend on billing cycle, currency, region, tax, promotion, and team size, and Proton’s displayed price fields were incomplete when checked for this article. The 2024 launch post listed a limited-time annual-billing offer of $5.99 per user per month, reduced from $7.99; that is historical pricing, not a current quote.

What the encryption does—and does not—mean
Proton says Drive encrypts file contents, file names, and folder names before data leaves a user’s device, and that it cannot read the protected contents. This end-to-end encryption is meaningfully different from encryption at rest and in transit alone: it is intended to keep the storage provider from reading files, not simply to protect data while stored or being transferred. See Proton’s explanation of Drive encryption and supported platforms.
Encryption does not mean that no one within the company can access a file. Proton’s business documentation says an organization administrator can use “Sign in to a user” to access a team member’s account and view its folder structure, open or download files, share them, and delete or restore them. This can help with employee departures and business continuity, but it is also a material privacy and governance consideration. Set expectations in internal policies and decide who should hold administrator privileges.
Encryption also cannot protect a file from a compromised device or an unlocked session: malware or someone using an employee’s authenticated device may access the file before it is encrypted or after it is decrypted. Pair the service with two-factor authentication, managed devices, careful recovery procedures, least-privilege sharing, and prompt offboarding.

Storage, sharing, and collaboration
Files and links
Proton lists secure file and folder sharing, public links, password protection, expiration dates, and access management. Recipients can be people without Proton accounts. The business-plan guide says users can share files of any size and lists no file-size limit; practical upload and download conditions can still depend on the app, connection, or recipient’s environment.

In Proton’s documented web workflow, sign in at account.proton.me, open Drive from the app switcher, and choose New upload. To share, use the link control on a file or folder; use Additional settings for options such as passwords and expiration dates. Labels may differ among app versions. Review the link’s access settings after sending it, and revoke access when it is no longer needed.
Version history, Docs, and Sheets
Drive Professional includes 365-day version history, according to Proton’s business-plan guide. Proton Docs supports collaborative document editing, including collaboration with invited people who do not have Proton accounts. Proton Sheets adds encrypted spreadsheet collaboration. Proton’s release notes describe ongoing Sheets work, including improved XLSX handling and ODS import and export in beta in 2026.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
- 3-year limited warranty
Those features do not establish feature parity with Microsoft Word and Excel or Google Docs and Sheets. If your work depends on complex formulas, macros, scripts, add-ons, charts, comments, advanced workflows, or exact Office formatting, test representative files and collaboration tasks before migrating. Export fidelity and offline behavior also matter if employees routinely work away from a connection.
Administration and employee access
Administrators can manage users, invitations, account access, permissions, and organization settings. Proton also describes reminders for enabling two-factor authentication. To view the user-management area, Proton documents this path: sign in to drive.proton.me, select Settings, then All settings, Organization, and Users.
Other team members do not automatically see a user’s files; access depends on sharing. That default separation is distinct from administrator access to a user’s account. Before adoption, decide who owns work files created by departing employees, how administrators will retrieve or transfer them, and what happens to external links, sessions, deleted files, and version history during offboarding.

Apps and Linux access
Proton lists web, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS/iPadOS access for Drive. In June 2026 it also announced Proton Drive CLI for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Proton describes command-line uploads and downloads, folder management, sharing, invitations, scripts, backup jobs, and cron-based workflows. The Linux offering described there is a CLI, not confirmation of a full graphical Linux sync client.
Migration, compliance, and operational fit
Test a representative migration
Proton documents migration tools for some Google Workspace data, but that does not establish a one-click transfer of every Drive file and collaboration setting. A TechRadar report says Drive files may require export and re-upload rather than the same Easy Switch process. Treat that as a workflow to verify for your particular repository, not a universal prohibition. Pilot with representative folders, permissions, Office files, and external shares before committing.
Validate compliance for your use
Proton says its business service is ISO 27001 certified and aligned with SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, CCPA, and GDPR requirements. Those statements do not make every customer’s deployment automatically compliant. Confirm contracts and data-processing terms, access controls, retention and deletion practices, employee procedures, data type, and applicable jurisdiction with your compliance advisers. See Proton’s business security and compliance information.

When Proton is a fit—and when another suite may be better
Proton’s central trade-off is provider-blind encryption versus ecosystem depth. Its Workspace positioning emphasizes encrypted services and privacy; that is Proton’s own comparison, not independent proof that it is better for every business.
- Consider Proton Drive if limiting the provider’s ability to read stored file contents is a priority, your team mainly needs secure storage, sharing, and ordinary document collaboration, or you want Drive alongside Proton’s other business services.
- Consider Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 if your workflows depend on their productivity apps, integrations, identity and administration tooling, or advanced collaborative features. Their standard storage models are not the same as Proton’s default end-to-end-encryption model.
- Consider Dropbox if your main need is familiar file synchronization and sharing rather than Proton’s broader privacy-oriented bundle.
- Compare Tresorit if you want to assess another business file-storage provider with a privacy-oriented position.
For confidential client, legal, financial, medical, or intellectual-property files, encryption can be a meaningful reason to evaluate Proton, but it does not remove endpoint, access-policy, or compliance responsibilities. For a business built around complex Office workbooks or Google integrations, the cost of retraining and lost workflow features may outweigh that privacy advantage.
