Proton announced Lumo for Business on October 30, 2025, offering teams a hosted AI assistant designed not to train models on company chats or retain server-side conversation logs. Since then, Proton has added Lumo 2.0 and folded Lumo access into some Workspace plans. The result is a privacy-focused option for drafting, document questions and research—not automatically a replacement for the broader administration and integrations of Microsoft, Google, or other enterprise AI platforms.
What Lumo for Business is
Lumo for Business is Proton’s team-oriented AI plan. Proton said at launch that organizations of any size could subscribe without a minimum number of users. It is separate from Lumo Plus, the individual paid plan, and from Proton’s broader business bundles.
- Lumo for Business: a standalone team AI service focused on confidential use.
- Workspace Standard and Premium: Proton collaboration suites that combine services such as Mail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, VPN and Pass with different levels of Lumo access.
- Lumo 2.0: the product generation released June 30, 2026, adding advanced reasoning, image generation, deep web search and long-term memory.

How the privacy model works
No training on business chats
Proton says Lumo does not use customer conversations to train its AI models. That is a policy promise about model training, not a claim that prompts never leave the customer’s device during a request.

No retained server-side chat logs
Proton says it does not keep a record of conversations: prompts are processed to produce a reply and plaintext is then erased. This differs from an offline model. Temporary plaintext processing is still necessary to generate an answer, and customers remain responsible for what employees submit.
Zero-access encryption for chat history
Proton says chat histories are encrypted so that only the relevant user’s devices can decrypt them. Proton’s launch explanation describes this as zero-access encryption. It should not be confused with a guarantee that every optional feature follows an identical processing path.
No third-party sharing, according to Proton
Proton says it does not share queries with third parties and cannot share chat contents it cannot access. Administrators should still review current subprocessors and terms, particularly before enabling web search or other features that may involve external services.
Swiss and European positioning
Proton markets Lumo as built in Europe and operated by a Swiss-headquartered company. That jurisdictional setting may matter to buyers concerned about data-sovereignty exposure, but it is not immunity from every lawful request or a substitute for a customer’s own transfer and disclosure analysis.

What “open source” does and does not prove
Proton says Lumo’s code and models are open source. Inspectable client or model components can improve transparency, but that does not automatically expose the complete production infrastructure, model-serving stack, operational controls or every data flow.
Useful business workflows
Lumo is most defensible when it assists people rather than making unsupervised decisions.
- Drafting and revising proposals, reports, policies and internal documentation.
- Summarizing long business material and extracting named facts or action items.
- Asking questions about PDFs and Docs supplied from Proton Drive.
- Creating first drafts for client communications, knowledge-base entries and meeting follow-ups.
- Brainstorming, outlining and performing structured analysis on non-final work.
- Working with confidential intellectual property or client information under an approved data-classification policy.
Generated text can be wrong, incomplete or based on outdated source material. Legal, medical, financial, compliance and security outputs need qualified human review before use.
How Proton Drive integration works—and what remains unclear
Proton says users can add PDFs or Docs from Proton Drive to a conversation for additional context. The original file remains governed by Drive’s storage and permission system; Proton says Drive uses end-to-end encryption and that Proton cannot access customer files (Drive security details).

The published launch material does not establish whether Lumo can search an entire Drive account, whether organization-wide shared folders are indexed automatically, or whether Drive permissions are re-evaluated inside every AI conversation. It also does not fully document administrator controls over referenced files, supported formats beyond the stated PDFs and Docs, or team-wide knowledge bases. Treat file selection as explicit unless Proton’s current documentation says otherwise, and verify these points before deployment.
What Lumo 2.0 changed
Proton’s June 30, 2026 Lumo 2.0 update added:
- Advanced reasoning.
- Image generation.
- Deep web search.
- Long-term memory.
- A newer interface and broader capabilities.
Those additions create governance questions that the available product update does not answer. Before enabling them, ask Proton whether memory is on by default, whether administrators can disable it, how users delete or export memories, and whether memories receive the same encryption and retention treatment as ordinary chats. For web search, confirm which providers receive queries, whether prompts or snippets are retained, and whether search can be disabled for sensitive work. Verify how image requests are processed and whether business accounts have different limits from individual accounts.
Administration: privacy can reduce visibility
Proton says the business plan includes administrative tools to manage team access. The public material confirms that general capability but does not enumerate a full enterprise control set. Obtain current documentation for:
- User provisioning, removal, centralized billing and domain verification.
- Role-based access controls and identity-provider or SSO support.
- Usage visibility, audit logs, retention settings and exports.
- Account recovery, employee offboarding and preservation of business-critical work.
- Shared projects, shared knowledge and restrictions on Drive references.
No retained chat logs is attractive for confidentiality, but it can complicate investigations, compliance review, knowledge transfer and recovery when an employee leaves. A company should define where approved outputs are stored rather than assuming private chats are an archive.

Compliance and regulated information
Proton says Lumo is designed to support GDPR and HIPAA requirements and cites ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications for its business services (Proton Drive for Business). Those statements do not make every customer deployment automatically compliant.
For HIPAA, confirm the exact configuration, access controls and contractual terms, including a business associate agreement where applicable. For GDPR, assess roles, lawful basis, purpose limitation, retention, transfers and subprocessors. Request current compliance reports, data-processing terms, regional-processing information and support commitments before uploading regulated records.

Pricing has changed in presentation since launch. Contemporary coverage of the October 30, 2025 announcement reported $14.99 per user per month on annual billing for Lumo for Business, with a launch price of $11.99. The same report listed a Proton Business Suite price of $27.98, discounted to $22.98. These are historical launch figures, not confirmed September 2026 prices (contemporary launch coverage).
Proton’s current comparison pages emphasize Workspace tiers. The retrieved pricing page contained incomplete or placeholder numeric fields, so check the live checkout for your country and billing term. Its listed feature structure is:

See the live business pricing page before purchasing. A Workspace Premium comparison should include the value of email, storage, VPN, password management and meetings—not just the AI allowance. Proton’s pages have also advertised a 14-day trial for listed plans and a 30-day money-back guarantee; confirm current regional terms at checkout.
Lumo compared with mainstream business AI
The meaningful comparison is not a blanket claim that one model is “best.” It is whether the product matches your governance and workflow requirements.

Relevant alternatives include ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Workspace with Gemini and Claude for Work or Enterprise. Self-hosted or locally run open models avoid sending content to a hosted provider, but shift hardware, maintenance, updates and security operations to the customer.
Who should consider Lumo?
Strong fit
- Small and midsize organizations where avoiding model training on company chats is a priority.
- Existing Proton customers that want AI alongside Drive and Proton communications.
- Teams mainly needing drafting, summaries, document Q&A and general research.
- Organizations that value Swiss or European jurisdictional positioning.
Proceed cautiously
- Companies dependent on Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Jira, Slack or proprietary connectors.
- Organizations requiring mature DLP, e-discovery, security-operations integrations or centralized prompt auditing.
- Buyers needing a documented API, custom deployment, dedicated environment or on-premises option.
- Regulated workflows where contractual controls have not been confirmed.
Deployment checklist
- Confirm the current plan, price, billing region, prompt limits and contract terms in Proton’s live checkout.
- Obtain current subprocessors, data-processing terms, certifications and regional-processing documentation.
- Document whether memory, deep web search and image generation are enabled, and identify available administrator controls.
- Pilot with low-risk documents before allowing confidential or regulated material.
- Define which Proton Drive folders and file types employees may reference; review permissions regularly.
- Train staff about hallucinations, prompt injection in uploaded files and accidental disclosure through web searches.
- Require human approval for legal, financial, medical, security and customer-facing outputs.
- Specify where approved results are stored and how business-critical work is preserved during offboarding.
Bottom line
Lumo for Business deserves consideration when privacy-first hosted AI and Proton’s ecosystem matter more than maximum integrations. Its differentiator is Proton’s stated no-training, no-retained-chat and zero-access-encryption model—not proof that it matches every enterprise capability of Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude. Lumo 2.0 makes the service more capable, while memory and web search make careful policy review more important. Verify current pricing, permissions, subprocessors and administrative controls before putting confidential business work into production.
