On August 26, 2025, protesters entered Building 34 at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, and occupied offices in the area used by company President Brad Smith. Microsoft temporarily locked down the building and called police; seven people inside were arrested. The protesters did not take over the entire campus or permanently seize the building.
What happened inside Building 34?
A group of activists entered Building 34, reached Smith’s office area, and staged a sit-in. They chanted and displayed banners; some locked themselves in offices or tried to barricade themselves there. Microsoft imposed a temporary lockdown and summoned police. Officers removed and arrested seven people inside. Roughly 20 additional protesters outside dispersed when police instructed them to leave, according to contemporary accounts.
The wording “seize a building” can suggest control of the whole structure. In this case, reports describe a brief occupation of executive offices within Building 34, not a takeover of Microsoft’s campus. The Associated Press’s account and TechCrunch’s report on the lockdown identify Smith’s office area as the focus.
Who organized the protest, and what did they want?
The campaign was associated with No Azure for Apartheid, a group involving current and former Microsoft workers as well as other technology-sector activists. Participants should not all be described as Microsoft employees: coverage of the demonstrations includes former workers and people from outside the company.

Protesters alleged that Microsoft technology had been used in Israeli military surveillance and targeting operations in Gaza and the West Bank. The Guardian’s coverage describes the campaign and allegations reported by investigative outlets concerning Azure and Israel’s Unit 8200. Those reported allegations are not, by themselves, proof that a particular Microsoft service was used in a specific military operation.

What did Microsoft say?
Microsoft President Brad Smith reiterated the company’s human-rights commitments and said Microsoft was reviewing allegations about military use of its technology. Smith also said the company had investigated claims and found no evidence that Azure or other Microsoft products were being used illegally, and described Israel’s use of Microsoft technology as primarily related to cybersecurity. Those are Microsoft’s stated findings and characterization, not an independent resolution of every allegation.
Microsoft also said it would maintain campus security and would not tolerate trespassing, property damage, disruption of business, or threats to employees. Bloomberg Law reported on Microsoft’s renewed pledge to review the claims; Thurrott quoted Smith’s account of the company’s investigation.

What happened to the people arrested?
Seven protesters were arrested inside Building 34 on August 26. Reports listed suspected or reported offenses including trespassing, obstruction, and resisting arrest. An arrest or reported allegation is not a conviction; the contemporary coverage cited here does not establish final charges, pleas, or case outcomes. GeekWire’s local account and The Spokesman-Review’s report describe the arrests and reported allegations.
How did the occupation follow earlier August protests?
The August 26 office action came after separate demonstrations at Microsoft’s Redmond campus on August 19 and 20. The August 19 protest centered on an outdoor plaza; protesters left after warnings about possible arrest. On August 20, police arrested people after Microsoft said demonstrators refused to leave and became aggressive, with property damage or threats also cited in coverage. Accounts differ on the arrest total for that event:

|---|---|---|
| August 20 campus protest | 18 | AP reported 18 arrests: AP account. |
| August 20 campus protest | 20 | GeekWire reported 20 arrests: GeekWire account. |
| August 26 Building 34 occupation | 7 | Seven people inside the building were arrested; this is a separate incident. |
The available reports do not resolve why the August 20 totals differ. The figures may reflect different counts or updates, but that explanation is not established in the cited accounts. The August 26 action was a further escalation in location and tactic: from outdoor campus demonstrations to entry into executive offices.
Why was the FBI mentioned?
Bloomberg reported that Microsoft had asked the FBI for help tracking or identifying people involved in protests against the company. That report formed part of the context around the August 26 action. It does not establish that the FBI surveilled peaceful protesters or opened a criminal investigation into protest activity. The scope of any assistance is not established in the contemporary coverage. Bloomberg’s report is the source for the request.

How does the action fit into the wider employee campaign?
The August demonstrations followed earlier protests at Microsoft events, including disruptions around the company’s 50th-anniversary celebrations and Microsoft Build, as well as demonstrations outside executives’ homes. AP reported that Microsoft fired one employee after an interruption involving CEO Satya Nadella and fired two others after disruptions at anniversary events. These actions are part of a longer campaign, but that does not mean every protest in it involved unlawful conduct. The office occupation drew a distinct response because demonstrators entered an executive work area and were accused of refusing to leave or obstructing removal.
