Those were announced goals, not proof that the full amount had been spent or that all planned facilities were operating.
What is Project Stargate?
Stargate is an AI-infrastructure venture announced at the White House on January 21, 2025. Its proposed buildout combines data-center campuses, computing systems and the electricity generation needed to support them. The facilities are intended to supply computing capacity for AI development and use; this is not a consumer product or a government program that individuals can sign up for.
OpenAI described the project as a way to strengthen U.S. AI capacity, create jobs, support re-industrialization and provide a strategic capability for national security. Those are the sponsors’ objectives, not independently verified outcomes.
Did Trump announce a $500 billion AI project?
Yes. In his January 21, 2025 remarks, President Donald Trump called Stargate “a new American company” that would invest at least $500 billion in U.S. AI infrastructure and said it would create more than 100,000 American jobs “almost immediately.” OpenAI and SoftBank’s announcement specified an intended $500 billion investment over four years and $100 billion for immediate deployment. The statements describe plans and projections, not audited spending, completed construction or confirmed job totals.

The announced scale should be read against later milestones. In its July 22, 2025 update, OpenAI said an Oracle partnership would add 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of U.S. data-center capacity. Including Stargate I in Abilene, Texas, OpenAI said more than 5 GW were under development, with systems expected to run over 2 million chips. On September 23, 2025, OpenAI described nearly 7 GW of planned capacity and over $400 billion in planned investment over the next three years, calling this a path toward the full 10-GW commitment by the end of 2025.

These dated company updates document announced development and progress, but do not independently audit total investment, operating capacity or completion against the target.
Who is funding Stargate?
The January 2025 announcement named SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX as initial equity funders. SoftBank was assigned financial responsibility, OpenAI operational responsibility, and SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son was named chairman. This describes the initial announced structure; it does not specify each funder’s dollar contribution or establish that every later site uses the same financing arrangement.

Several other companies were named as key initial technology partners: Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle and OpenAI. Oracle’s role has included data-center and cloud infrastructure; OpenAI later said the Abilene flagship was operating on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. OpenAI also reported that Oracle began delivering the first NVIDIA GB200 racks in June 2025, and that early training and inference workloads had started. Microsoft was named among the technology partners, in the context of its Azure relationship with OpenAI; the announcement did not assign it the same stated financial or operational responsibilities as SoftBank and OpenAI.

The announcement presented the investment as private-company funding. Trump separately said his administration would help through possible emergency actions to accelerate electricity and construction. That proposed government support is distinct from the announced company investment; it does not mean the $500 billion was announced as federal spending.
Where will Stargate data centers be built?
OpenAI identified Abilene, Texas, as the flagship project and said construction was already underway there at launch. It also said it was evaluating additional U.S. campuses. In September 2025, OpenAI named five additional sites or expansions, alongside Abilene and ongoing CoreWeave projects:

OpenAI said the first three of those sites, together with a possible 600-megawatt Abilene expansion, could deliver more than 5.5 GW. Lordstown was described as on track to become operational in 2026, while the Milam County project was being developed with SB Energy. These descriptions are dated company statements; a planned site, possible expansion or stated schedule does not by itself show that a facility has been completed or energized.
The physical scale matters: a data center needs suitable land, construction, computing equipment and dependable electricity. In January 2025, Oracle chairman Larry Ellison said the first Texas buildings under construction were each about half a million square feet, with ten then planned to expand to twenty. That was a statement at the announcement, not an independently audited account of completed buildings. OpenAI’s January 31, 2025 infrastructure outreach invited firms in land, power, construction and equipment, and included requests for proposals for land and power and qualifications for architecture and engineering site design. The outreach indicates that siting and power supply are central requirements, not incidental details.
How many jobs will Stargate create?
There is no verified final job count in the announced figures. Trump said at the January 21, 2025 announcement that Stargate would create more than 100,000 American jobs almost immediately. OpenAI’s launch statement projected hundreds of thousands of jobs, while its July 2025 update estimated that building, developing and operating the additional 4.5-GW Oracle partnership would create over 100,000 jobs. In September, OpenAI said the first three additional sites and a possible Abilene expansion could create over 25,000 onsite jobs plus tens of thousands of other U.S. jobs.

These are projections attributed to Trump or OpenAI, not confirmed hires or an independently measured employment total. Their scopes differ: one is a broad announcement claim, another concerns a specific capacity addition, and the September estimate separates onsite work from additional jobs elsewhere in the U.S. The available statements do not provide a common method for comparing or adding those estimates.
What should a personal-finance reader take from Stargate?
Stargate is relevant to household finances mainly as a large business and infrastructure investment, not as a direct consumer offer. The announced releases do not quantify an effect on household electricity bills, taxes, investment returns or consumer prices. They also do not establish a guaranteed financial benefit for people who live near a proposed site. A reader considering any personal investment connected to AI infrastructure would need company-specific financial information and risk disclosures beyond these project announcements.
For businesses, OpenAI’s outreach points to potential procurement opportunities in land, electricity, construction, equipment and site design. It is not evidence of an affiliate program or a guarantee that any supplier will win work.
