Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows 10 standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached their support deadline the same day. Your computer and applications will not suddenly stop working, but Windows 10 no longer receives normal security, feature, or technical updates. Microsoft’s practical choices are to move to a supported Windows 11 device, replace the computer, use Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) temporarily if eligible, and move unsupported Office software to a current configuration.
Microsoft 365 Apps are a limited exception: Microsoft says their desktop applications can receive security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028. That does not extend support for the Windows 10 operating system.
The deadlines that matter
| Product or configuration | Status as of August 16, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Windows 10 Home, Pro and ordinary supported editions | Standard support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Windows 10 version 22H2 with Consumer ESU | Critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027 |
| Office 2016 | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Office 2019 | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Office 2021 | Support ends in October 2026 |
| Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 | Security updates through October 10, 2028, according to Microsoft |
| Office LTSC 2024 | Commercial fixed-lifecycle support through October 9, 2029 |
Microsoft’s Windows 10 notice explains the operating-system deadline and recommended paths at its support page. Office 2016 and 2019 have separate lifecycle policies documented here.
What end of support means for your PC
End of support is not a shutdown, license expiration, or automatic deletion of files. Existing programs and documents may continue to work. The problem is the deteriorating security baseline: Microsoft no longer supplies ordinary Windows 10 security and quality updates, feature improvements, or general technical support.
#1 Best Overall
ESU is narrower than normal support. It supplies specified critical and important security updates, not new features, general bug fixes, compatibility work, or technical assistance. An antivirus product cannot patch an uncorrected Windows kernel, driver, networking component, or system service.
Identify your Windows and Office versions
Check Windows
- Open Settings > System > About and read Windows specifications.
- On Windows 10, also open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install any available updates.
- Record the edition and version. Consumer ESU eligibility requires Windows 10 version 22H2.
Menu wording can vary by language, edition, and administrator policy. Microsoft documents upgrade checks and paths at Windows 11 installation methods.
Check Office
Open Word or Excel, choose File > Account, and record the product name, update channel, and account or license shown. Distinguish Microsoft 365 Apps from Office 2016, 2019, 2021, Office Home 2024, and Office LTSC 2024; their support commitments are different.

Can the computer run Windows 11?
Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app rather than guessing from processor age. Windows 11 eligibility includes a supported processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, sufficient memory and storage, and an appropriate firmware configuration. The published minimum requirements are in Microsoft’s hardware requirements document.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot disabled: a firmware setting may be the cause; consult the manufacturer before changing UEFI settings.
- Unsupported processor: a firmware change normally will not make it eligible.
- Legacy BIOS mode: conversion may require careful backup and manufacturer-specific steps.
- Memory, storage, driver, manufacturer, or corporate-policy block: resolve the specific reason rather than assuming every failure has the same remedy.
If Windows Update offers Windows 11, use that supported route after backing up. Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on hardware that fails its requirements; such a device can be unsupported and may encounter servicing or driver problems.
Your four realistic Windows choices
1. Upgrade an eligible PC
This is usually the lowest direct-cost option. Back up first, confirm that critical applications and peripherals work on Windows 11, then use Windows Update or Microsoft’s supported installation method.
Rank #3
2. Replace an old or unreliable PC
A new Windows 11 computer is usually the strongest long-term answer for an unsupported processor, failing storage, a weak battery, or a device that cannot tolerate downtime. Compare the purchase price with repairs, ESU, migration labor, and lost productivity. Confirm printer, scanner, VPN, accounting, accessibility, and other required software before decommissioning the old machine.
3. Use Consumer ESU as a bridge
Microsoft lists Consumer ESU for eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices through October 12, 2027. On its United States page, enrollment is listed at no additional cost when PC settings are synced, or through 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a $30 one-time purchase plus applicable tax. One license can cover up to 10 devices. Terms, availability, and prices can differ by country and may change.

ESU fits a reliable computer whose owner needs time to migrate or buy a replacement. It is a deadline, not a new Windows 10 lifecycle: keep automatic updates enabled and set a replacement date before October 12, 2027. Enroll through Microsoft’s official ESU page.
4. Choose another operating system
Linux or another alternative can work for technically confident users with straightforward browser, office, and media needs. Test every essential workflow first. Microsoft Access, VBA-heavy workbooks, Adobe or industry applications, Windows-only peripherals, device-management systems, enterprise identity, and compliance tools can make migration impractical.
Choose the right Office path
Office 2016 or Office 2019
These editions no longer receive Microsoft’s normal security updates, bug fixes, or technical support after October 14, 2025. Plan a replacement or migration. Office 2019 also has a separate cloud-compatibility concern: Microsoft documentation says connections to some Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online and SharePoint Online, are no longer supported for Office 2019 as of October 2023. See Microsoft’s Office suites documentation.
Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft says Microsoft 365 desktop apps on Windows 10 can receive security updates through October 10, 2028. This is app coverage only; it does not make Windows 10 supported. A subscription also does not override a business administrator’s update channel, licensing, or device policies. Details are in Microsoft’s Office and Windows end-of-support guidance and configuration matrix.
Best Value
Office 2021
Office 2021 support ends in October 2026. Buying it in 2026 therefore creates a short remaining support window rather than a long-term solution.
Office Home 2024
Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac. It avoids recurring billing but does not provide the continuously updated Microsoft 365 service model. Microsoft says perpetual purchases do not include an automatic upgrade to the next major release. Product-page prices observed in the United States have included $149.99 and $179.99 listings, so verify the live page before purchase at Microsoft’s comparison page.
Office LTSC 2024
Office LTSC 2024 is a commercial, fixed-feature edition for organizations with controlled deployment requirements, supported through October 9, 2029. It is not the ordinary consumer recommendation. See Microsoft’s Office 2024 and LTSC FAQ.

Before changing anything
- Back up documents, photos, browser data, email archives, license keys, installers, and configuration files.
- Confirm that a test restore actually works.
- List macros, Access databases, add-ins, external links, VPN clients, printers, scanners, and specialized applications.
- Check cloud synchronization and make files available offline where necessary.
- Record Office accounts, activation details, Outlook data files, and email archives.
For a Windows 11 upgrade
- Run PC Health Check and save the result.
- Resolve TPM or Secure Boot settings only with reliable manufacturer instructions.
- Do not treat an unsupported CPU as a problem that a registry bypass will officially solve.
- Use Windows Update when Microsoft offers the upgrade.
- Afterward, test sign-in, backups, Office files, macros, email, printers, scanners, VPN, and the most important work process.
For temporary Windows 10 use
- Update to Windows 10 version 22H2 if possible.
- Install all available Windows updates.
- Enroll through Microsoft’s ESU flow and confirm enrollment status.
- Keep automatic updates enabled.
- Set a firm replacement or migration deadline before October 12, 2027.
Costs, security, and fit at a glance
| Choice | Security position | Cost pattern | Best fit | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 upgrade | Supported if hardware qualifies | Usually lowest direct cost | Compatible PCs | Driver or application migration issues |
| New Windows 11 PC | Strongest long-term option | Highest upfront cost | Old or unreliable computers | Hardware and migration expense |
| Windows 10 ESU | Limited security updates to October 12, 2027 | Sync settings, 1,000 Rewards points, or $30 US purchase, depending on method | Short transition period | No features, general fixes, or technical support |
| Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 | App security updates through October 10, 2028 | Subscription | Existing subscribers | Does not support Windows 10 itself |
| Office Home 2024 | Perpetual Office support under its lifecycle | One-time purchase | One user avoiding subscriptions | No continuous feature stream or included future upgrade |
| Office LTSC 2024 | Fixed commercial lifecycle through October 9, 2029 | Commercial licensing | Controlled business deployments | Not designed as the standard consumer edition |
| Unsupported Windows 11 installation | Uncertain and unsupported | Potentially low direct cost | Experimental users only | Possible update and driver problems |
| Linux or another OS | Depends on the distribution and applications | Often low software cost | Flexible, technically confident users | Windows-only workflow incompatibility |
Common mistakes to avoid
- “My antivirus keeps updating, so Windows 10 is safe.” Antivirus does not replace operating-system patches.
- “I have Microsoft 365, so Windows 10 is supported.” Microsoft 365 Apps have a limited app-update extension; Windows 10 does not.
- “Office 2024 solves everything.” It can address an Office lifecycle issue, not an unsupported operating system.
- “PC Health Check said no, so nothing can be fixed.” TPM or Secure Boot settings may be correctable; an unsupported processor generally is not.
- “ESU means Microsoft will fix anything.” ESU is limited security coverage, not full support.
- “A bypass makes Windows 11 supported.” Technical installation and Microsoft-supported eligibility are different.
Households and businesses need different plans
The Consumer ESU terms, Microsoft-account enrollment, Rewards points, and $30 United States price are not universal enterprise terms. Businesses and schools may have commercial ESU, LTSC, managed-update, licensing, compliance, and procurement options. Consult your licensing administrator before applying consumer guidance to organizational devices.
