What “lifetime” meant under the terms
“Lifetime” was not an unconditional promise that storage and access would exist forever. Polar Backup’s terms limit the license and reserve the ability to modify, suspend, or discontinue the service. They say a lifetime license may end if the product is no longer available, Polar Backup cancels the license, or the user’s computer has not accessed Polar Backup’s server for more than 90 calendar days. The 90-day rule is a serious risk for archives
An archive is often left untouched for months—the very pattern that can put a license at risk under the inactivity condition. The terms tie the rule to the user’s computer accessing the server, so do not assume that merely having old files stored online keeps an account active. Confirm what activity counts and how the requirement is monitored before uploading anything you may need later.

Termination can put stored data at risk
The terms say access to backup data may end upon termination or expiration and that data may be automatically deleted. That means the end of a license can become a data-recovery problem, not just a billing or account issue. Maintain another independent copy rather than treating the provider as the permanent custodian of irreplaceable files.
Maintenance and restoration language is not straightforward
The terms describe lifetime status as covering storage, while support, restoration assistance, and enhanced services may require an active maintenance plan. They also say that canceling a maintenance plan can terminate the lifetime storage license. Those provisions leave an important practical question: whether someone can keep storage without paying for maintenance, and what restoration help remains available. Get a written answer that applies to the exact plan before relying on it.

Cold storage is not the same as sync or fast recovery
Cloud sync keeps files convenient to access or edit across devices. Cloud backup is intended to preserve recoverable copies. Cold or archive storage is generally aimed at data accessed infrequently: it may cost less, but retrieval can be slower. Polar Backup’s 2021 promotional description said restoration could take at least several hours; it does not establish a current guaranteed recovery time.
- Potentially suitable: completed projects, old photos, and other files you rarely need on short notice, provided you have another copy.
- Poor fit: active work, urgent recovery, or a full computer restore when downtime matters.
- Practical consequence: a full restore may depend on service availability and take substantially longer than opening a synced file.
AWS infrastructure, as described in the promotion, is not itself a guarantee about Polar Backup’s account support, retention, or restoration obligations.

It may suit a secondary archive only if

- You keep independent local and off-site copies, so losing access to this account would not be catastrophic.
- You understand any inactivity, maintenance, device, restoration, and data-retention conditions.
Avoid relying on it if
- It would be the sole copy of family photos, financial records, business files, or other irreplaceable data.
- You need quick recovery or contractual guarantees for uptime, retention, and support.
- You cannot monitor account activity or maintain another backup.
A safer way to protect important files
Use a 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies of important data, on two different storage systems or media, with one copy off-site. For example, retain the working files on your computer, make a separate local copy on an external drive, and keep an off-site backup with a provider whose current plan, recovery process, and retention terms you have reviewed. No single cloud account should be the entire backup plan.
Before buying any lifetime storage offer, check the provider’s current operating status and official checkout; define what “lifetime” means; look for inactivity and discontinuation clauses; verify deletion and export rules; confirm whether support or restoration costs extra; and test that your operating system and devices are supported. Also ask about bandwidth, file-size, device, user, version-history, and ransomware-recovery limits. If you need regular computer backup, compare current recurring backup services such as Backblaze Personal Backup or IDrive; check their current prices and terms directly, since they are not established here. Consumer sync and storage services such as Google One or Dropbox are not automatically substitutes for full-device backup.
