Pokémon GO Has a New Owner: What Niantic’s $3.5 Billion Scopely Deal Means

Pokémon GO was not sold alone or shut down. Scopely acquired Niantic’s games business in 2025, while the former Niantic games team now operates as Scopely Explore.

Pokémon GO was not shut down, and Niantic did not sell the game as a standalone product. Niantic agreed to sell its games business to Scopely for a transaction value of $3.5 billion on March 12, 2025. The deal closed on May 29, 2025.

The transaction transferred Pokémon GO and several related products to Scopely. The former Niantic games organization now operates within Scopely under the name Scopely Explore. Niantic itself continues as Niantic Spatial, a geospatial-technology company that retained Ingress Prime and Peridot.

The short answer: Pokémon GO changed owners, but it did not end

For players, the most important distinction is this: it is goodbye to Pokémon GO as a Niantic-owned game—not goodbye to Pokémon GO itself.

Scopely continues to operate and publish Pokémon GO as an active live-service game. Its official product page still lists the game and its features, including raids, Routes, trading, Gyms, and live events.

Scopely and the former Niantic games teams also said that existing games and long-term roadmaps would continue. That is not a promise that every price, event, feature, employee, or business policy will remain unchanged forever. It does mean the acquisition was structured as a change of ownership and operating control, not as a shutdown.

See Pokémon GO’s current Scopely product page.

What did Scopely actually buy?

The $3.5 billion transaction covered Niantic’s broader games business, not Pokémon GO alone. The package included:

  • Pokémon GO
  • Pikmin Bloom
  • Monster Hunter Now
  • Campfire, Niantic’s social and community platform
  • Wayfarer, the platform used for location nominations and related contributions
  • Associated live events, community experiences, operating infrastructure, and game personnel

More than 400 Niantic gamemakers joined Scopely as part of the transaction, according to Scopely. The companies presented the deal as a transfer of a functioning games operation, with its teams and products, rather than a purchase of a single mobile application.

That makes the common headline “Scopely bought Pokémon GO for $3.5 billion” directionally understandable but technically incomplete. Scopely bought the games business that included Pokémon GO and its connected services.

Read Scopely’s acquisition announcement.

When did the acquisition happen?

There are two important dates:

Date What happened
March 12, 2025 Niantic and Scopely announced the agreement.
May 29, 2025 The acquisition closed and the games business formally moved to Scopely.

Articles describing the deal as merely proposed or pending are outdated. As of 2026, Scopely is the operator and publisher of the transferred games, while the former Niantic games team is known as Scopely Explore.

What does the $3.5 billion figure mean?

The headline amount refers to the value of the transaction for Niantic’s games business. It does not mean that Pokémon GO alone was independently valued at $3.5 billion.

Niantic separately said that the transaction included $350 million in cash distributed as part of the deal, resulting in approximately $3.85 billion in total value for Niantic equity holders. The distinction matters:

  • $3.5 billion: the announced transaction value for the games business.
  • Approximately $3.85 billion: Niantic’s description of the total value delivered to equity holders when the additional cash distribution is included.

Neither figure should be treated as a standalone sale price for the Pokémon franchise. Scopely did not buy the Pokémon intellectual property. It acquired the relevant games business and operating rights covered by the agreement.

Why did Niantic sell its games business?

Niantic’s stated strategy was to separate its games operation from its technology business.

Under the plan, Scopely would provide a specialist mobile-games publisher with experience in live-service operations, publishing, community management, and large-scale events. Niantic could then focus on geospatial technology, mapping, and artificial intelligence.

Niantic’s remaining company became Niantic Spatial. It describes its work as building geospatial-AI technology and a next-generation map intended to help devices and machines understand and interact with the physical world.

This official rationale should be separated from speculation. The sale does not, by itself, prove that Pokémon GO was failing, that Niantic had run out of ideas, or that the company was abandoning games because of financial distress. Those conclusions require evidence beyond the transaction announcement.

What stayed with Niantic?

Niantic did not sell every part of the company. Niantic Spatial retained:

  • Its geospatial-AI and mapping-focused technology operation
  • Ingress Prime
  • Peridot

Meanwhile, Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, and Wayfarer moved to Scopely.

This corporate split explains why “Niantic is gone” is also inaccurate. Niantic’s former games identity changed substantially, but Niantic Spatial remains a separate technology-focused business.

What is Scopely?

Scopely is a mobile-games publisher whose portfolio includes MONOPOLY GO!, Stumble Guys, Star Trek Fleet Command, and MARVEL Strike Force.

Scopely was acquired by Savvy Games Group for $4.9 billion in 2023. Savvy Games Group is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. That ownership context is relevant to understanding Scopely’s corporate structure, but it does not mean that the Saudi government directly purchased Pokémon GO or owns the Pokémon franchise.

A more accurate description is: Pokémon GO is operated by Scopely, which is owned by Savvy Games Group, a Saudi-backed gaming group.

Why was Pokémon GO worth so much to Scopely?

Scopely described Pokémon GO as one of mobile gaming’s most successful and durable global products. In its acquisition announcement, Scopely said that Pokémon GO had:

  • More than 100 million unique players in 2024
  • More than 20 million weekly active players
  • Availability in more than 190 countries and regions
  • More than 30 billion miles explored by players
  • About 40 minutes of average daily playtime
  • More than two million Pokémon GO Fest tickets sold in 2024

Scopely also said the broader Niantic games business had more than 30 million monthly active players and generated more than $1 billion in 2024 revenue.

These are figures supplied by the acquiring company. They should not be presented as independently audited measurements, and the broader revenue figure should not be attributed to Pokémon GO alone.

From a business perspective, the acquisition gave Scopely a large recurring player community, a globally recognized franchise relationship, experienced live-service teams, and expertise in location-based play and real-world events. Those assets help explain why the deal was larger than a conventional purchase of a mobile app.

What changes for Pokémon GO players?

What is likely to continue

  • Pokémon GO remains available as an active game.
  • The existing game teams and leadership were expected to continue supporting the titles.
  • Pokémon GO remains a live-service product rather than being replaced by a Scopely game.
  • Campfire and Wayfarer remain part of the connected Pokémon GO ecosystem.
  • Existing events and long-term development plans were expected to continue.

Scopely’s message to the player communities emphasized continuity rather than an immediate redesign.

What players should monitor

A new owner can change business priorities even when a game remains operational. Players should watch for possible changes involving:

  • In-app prices, bundles, passes, and other monetization
  • Event structure, ticket prices, and reward design
  • Staffing and decision-making responsibilities
  • Privacy policies and data practices
  • Cross-promotion with other Scopely games
  • The balance between new features, technical improvements, and revenue-focused updates

These are reasonable watch points, not confirmed outcomes. The reviewed announcements do not establish that Scopely has raised Pokémon GO prices, introduced intrusive advertising, changed its monetization model, or planned a shutdown.

Ownership alone also does not require players to switch apps or create a new account. No such requirement is established by the official sources covering the transaction.

What happened to the Niantic name?

In 2026, Scopely introduced Scopely Explore as the name for the former Niantic games team. Scopely says Scopely Explore is a team within Scopely, not a separate company or subsidiary.

Its product portal describes the group as formerly known as Niantic and lists Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, and Wayfarer.

This update is important because it shows that the acquisition was not simply a legal transfer followed by business-as-usual branding. The former Niantic games organization has been integrated into Scopely’s structure, even though the individual game brands remain recognizable to players.

The business trade-off for each company

For Niantic

The transaction gave Niantic a major liquidity event and allowed it to concentrate resources on geospatial AI and mapping. The trade-off is that Niantic no longer directly controls Pokémon GO or most of its former games portfolio. Its most visible consumer gaming identity now sits inside Scopely.

For Scopely

Scopely gained a large, durable franchise and a significant global player base. It also gained experienced teams and a presence in location-based social play.

The risk is that a $3.5 billion acquisition creates pressure to maintain Pokémon GO’s engagement and revenue. The game depends on licensed Pokémon-related intellectual property and partner relationships, and its location-based design may not respond well to every conventional mobile-publishing tactic. Pushing monetization too aggressively could damage player trust.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For players

Players could benefit from additional publishing resources, stronger infrastructure, larger events, and investment in multiplayer or social features. They could also face more commercial pressure, changes to event economics, or a shift in product priorities.

The central uncertainty is not whether Pokémon GO exists—it does—but how much creative and operational independence the former Niantic teams retain as Scopely Explore develops the game.

What the acquisition does not mean

  • It does not mean Pokémon GO was sold for $3.5 billion by itself. The deal covered a wider games business.
  • It does not mean Niantic shut down completely. Niantic Spatial remains in operation.
  • It does not mean Scopely owns Pokémon. The Pokémon intellectual property is not the asset described as being acquired.
  • It does not prove that Pokémon GO will become another MONOPOLY GO. Similar ownership does not establish identical gameplay or monetization.
  • It does not prove that prices, advertising, staffing, or features have already changed. Those claims need separate, current evidence.

Bottom line for players and business readers

Niantic’s $3.5 billion transaction was a completed sale of its games business to Scopely, not the closure of Pokémon GO. The deal closed on May 29, 2025, transferred Pokémon GO and related products to Scopely, and left Niantic Spatial with its geospatial technology business, Ingress Prime, and Peridot.

As of 2026, the former Niantic games operation is called Scopely Explore. Pokémon GO remains an active Scopely-published game. The real question is no longer whether the game will survive the sale; it is how Scopely’s ownership affects monetization, investment, staffing, events, and long-term product decisions.
