Buying a phone now may protect you from higher prices, but it is not automatically the cheapest move. Reports of AI-driven demand for memory chips and a Google warning about supplier-driven RAM costs make near-term price pressure plausible. Yet a large trade-in credit, a discounted previous-generation model, Apple’s expected September cycle, or a battery replacement could change the calculation.
Why phone prices could rise
AI data centers are consuming large quantities of memory components. A Financial Times report said that tighter memory supply could put upward pressure on smartphone and PC prices during 2026 (industry context).
Manufacturers have several ways to respond:
- raise retail prices, especially on premium models;
- reduce RAM or storage at a given price;
- offer smaller launch discounts;
- use larger carrier subsidies or longer financing terms;
- increase prices only on selected configurations or regions.
Android Central reported that Google linked Pixel price pressure to supplier-driven RAM costs (Android Central’s report). That does not establish a universal increase for every phone, storage tier, or country. The final effect depends on the model, capacity, region, retailer and promotion.
What is—and is not—confirmed about higher prices
- Reported industry pressure: memory demand associated with AI is expected to make some electronics more expensive.
- Company-specific signal: Google reportedly acknowledged RAM-cost pressure affecting Pixel hardware.
- Still unknown: the exact U.S. increase for each Pixel 11 model, whether all storage tiers rise equally, and whether Apple or Samsung will pass through comparable costs.
In other words, “prices could rise” is a reason to compare a good offer now—not proof that every phone becomes more expensive immediately.

Pixel 11 makes the timing question immediate
The Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold were revealed in August 2026. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide reported that preorders opened on August 12, with general availability reported for August 20 (preorder coverage; launch coverage).
Google Store offers listed U.S. launch promotions including trade-in rebates as high as $1,100 (Google Store offers). A high list price can therefore be partly hidden by a large credit. A “free” or heavily discounted carrier phone normally means bill credits, an eligible trade-in, a qualifying plan, and a 24- or 36-month commitment—not an unrestricted handset at no cost.
Pixel 11 or discounted Pixel 10?
Compare the effective cost and the improvements you will actually use, rather than comparing launch prices alone. Some reviewers have argued that Pixel 11’s generational gains may not justify launch pricing for every Pixel 10 owner (Tom’s Guide). That is a value judgment, not evidence that Pixel 11 is a bad phone.

Pixel 11 is more compelling when
- your current phone is failing or outside important security support;
- you qualify for a large, verified trade-in credit;
- you plan to keep the phone for several years;
- its camera, battery, modem, processor or AI functions solve a real problem;
- you accept launch pricing in exchange for the newest hardware.
Pixel 10 may be better value when
- the Pixel 11 improvements are incremental for your use;
- you can buy Pixel 10 substantially below its original price;
- you are paying cash and cannot use a carrier subsidy;
- Pixel 10’s support period and performance meet your needs.
Before trading in, compare the new phone’s price, your credit, taxes and any plan change with the actual cash price of discounted Pixel 10 inventory.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 family is already available; general availability began March 11, 2026. The Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299.99 before applicable discounts (Samsung Newsroom). Samsung advertised up to $900 in eligible preorder trade-in credit, while later materials cited savings of up to $720 on the S26 Ultra (Samsung Newsroom; Samsung Newsroom). These are different promotional windows, not a single permanent offer.
Because S26 is already in market, waiting for a launch is not automatically advantageous. Check the qualifying device, purchase channel, plan, inspection condition and credit duration. A carrier’s apparent free-phone offer can cost more than an unlocked purchase if it requires an expensive plan or forfeits a low-cost existing one.

iPhone shoppers have a different timing decision
Do not automatically apply the Pixel-specific RAM warning to Apple. Apple has not confirmed the final 2026 iPhone announcement date or iPhone 18 pricing. September is the normal strategic window to watch, so an iPhone shopper whose current phone works may reasonably wait for Apple’s announcement and then compare the outgoing iPhone 17 or 17 Pro with the new models. Confirm the date through Apple’s Newsroom and prices through its iPhone store.
Compare the current promotion, your phone’s trade-in value, whether the existing model already meets your needs, and the likely resale effect of a new launch. Apple’s 2025 U.S. manufacturing announcement does not establish 2026 iPhone pricing (Apple announcement).

Effective cost = purchase price + required plan costs + financing costs − trade-in value − promotional credits − included services or accessories.
For a carrier offer, substitute the actual figures:
- Phone price: $X
- Trade-in credit: $Y
- Monthly credits: $Y ÷ 36 (or the stated term)
- Extra plan cost: $Z × 36
- Taxes and fees: $A
Net cost over the commitment is $X − $Y + ($Z × 36) + $A. Add activation, upgrade and shipping fees, and account for any remaining installments if you leave early.

Unlocked versus carrier purchase
| Option | Advantages | Risks or obligations |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocked manufacturer purchase | Carrier flexibility, easier resale and switching, no long bill-credit schedule | Higher upfront cost and sometimes smaller promotional credit; verify network bands and eSIM compatibility |
| Carrier purchase | Lower apparent monthly cost and potentially large trade-in credits | Qualifying plan, new line or upgrade requirement; credits can stop if you leave or pay off early |
“Free” generally means subsidized through credits. It does not mean there is no plan, tax, commitment or opportunity cost.
How to verify a trade-in offer
- Record the phone’s independent resale value.
- Read condition rules for cracks, water damage, missing parts, cameras and activation locks.
- Determine whether credit is immediate or spread over 24–36 months.
- Check for a new-line, upgrade or premium-plan requirement.
- Calculate the plan-cost difference from your current service.
- Add taxes, activation, upgrade and shipping fees.
- Check the return policy and what happens to credits if the new phone is returned.
- Back up and photograph the old phone before shipment.
- Follow the provider’s instructions for disabling activation lock and factory-resetting.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number until the credit is fully applied.
When waiting is the smarter choice
- Your phone is fast enough and still receives security updates.
- The battery is the only serious problem and replacement is practical.
- You are specifically waiting for an iPhone or foldable launch.
- Your current trade-in value is weak.
- The offer requires an expensive new line or sacrifices a low-cost plan.
- The new model’s main benefits are software features likely to reach older devices.
- You want post-launch reviews of battery, modem, camera or software reliability.
Battery replacement can beat a new purchase
If the phone otherwise works and remains supported, price a battery replacement before replacing it. Costs vary by model, location, provider, warranty status and damage, so there is no universal price. Use the manufacturer’s repair pages: Apple, Google Pixel or Samsung.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Default move |
|---|---|
| Phone is broken, unsafe or unsupported | Buy now with a verified promotion and strong support period |
| Pixel owner with a large eligible trade-in | Compare Pixel 11’s effective price now |
| Cash buyer with a deep Pixel 10 discount | Consider Pixel 10 instead of launch pricing |
| Working iPhone and willing to wait | Watch Apple’s 2026 announcement, then compare offers |
| Samsung shopper | Compare current S26 promotions now |
| Battery is the only issue | Get a manufacturer-authorized replacement quote |
| Maximum flexibility matters | Prefer unlocked unless the carrier subsidy clearly wins |
Bottom line
Buy now if you already need a replacement and can lock in a genuinely strong trade-in or carrier promotion. Pixel shoppers should compare Pixel 11’s effective launch cost with discounted Pixel 10 stock. Samsung shoppers can evaluate the available S26 deals today. iPhone shoppers with a functioning phone have a stronger reason to wait for Apple’s expected September cycle. If only battery life is failing, repair may be the financially sound choice.
