Phil and Penny Knight announced a $2 billion commitment to the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) on August 14, 2025. The pledge is intended to support cancer research, clinical trials, patient care and family services; OHSU has not disclosed a payment schedule or the commitment’s full legal terms in the sources reviewed.

Who gave OHSU $2 billion?

Phil Knight, Nike’s co-founder, and his wife, Penny Knight, jointly announced the $2 billion commitment. OHSU described it as a record-breaking gift. The Associated Press reported that OHSU called it the largest single gift to a U.S. university, college or academic health center. That distinction reflects OHSU’s characterization of the announcement; comparisons depend on how a gift and recipient institution are defined.

The recipient is the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU, not the University of Oregon. OHSU President Shereef Elnahal said in the university’s August 14, 2025 announcement: “This gift is an unprecedented investment in the millions of lives burdened with cancer, especially patients and families here in Oregon.” The Knights told the Associated Press: “We couldn’t be more excited about the transformational potential of this work for humanity.”

What is the commitment intended to fund?

OHSU and the Associated Press described research, clinical trials, cancer care and support for patients and families as intended uses. The plans include expanding clinical trials and basic cancer research, as well as services such as psychological, genetic and financial counseling; symptom management; nutritional support; and survivorship care. These are stated aims, not evidence that the gift has already produced specific clinical results.

OHSU said the institute would become a self-governed entity within the university, with its own board. In a September 24, 2026 update, OHSU reported developments in the institute’s board and executive leadership and said it had gained momentum since the gift. That update documents leadership progress, but does not establish that every planned organizational change or funding deployment is complete.

How this pledge fits OHSU’s cancer-research history

The 2025 commitment is separate from an earlier Knight-funded fundraising effort. OHSU’s institute history says the Knights made a $500 million challenge gift in 2013 for the Knight Cancer Challenge. The challenge raised a total of $1 billion by 2015, according to OHSU. OHSU also records the 2016 opening of its Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research Center.

The amounts refer to different things: the 2013 figure was a challenge gift, the 2015 figure was the total raised through that challenge, and the 2025 figure is a new commitment announced for the institute.

What is not yet clear about the $2 billion

OHSU and the Associated Press described the announcement as a commitment or gift, but the reviewed reporting does not establish a schedule for payments or the full legal terms. It also does not report a named statistic showing outcomes already caused by this 2025 commitment. The announced uses and the later leadership update should therefore be understood as plans and institutional progress, rather than proof of completed funding or measurable patient benefit.
