It combined conversational product research, AI-generated comparisons and—in selected cases—checkout inside Perplexity through a button called Buy With Pro. Perplexity’s current help documentation uses the name Instant Buy and says Pro Search is no longer required, although product and merchant eligibility still varies.
What Perplexity launched on November 18, 2024
The launch, described by Perplexity as Shop Like a Pro, was designed to combine shopping research and purchasing in one answer rather than simply returning retailer links.

- Natural-language product searches, such as asking for a laptop under a particular budget or a gift matching several preferences.
- AI-generated recommendations presented in visual product cards.
- Prices, sellers, product descriptions, reviews, key features, and generated pros and cons.
- Image-and-text searches, allowing a shopper to provide a product image and add a written request.
- In-Perplexity checkout for selected products and merchants.
The launch coverage described roughly three to five product cards in the original experience. A card could be opened for more detailed information, but AI-generated summaries were not a substitute for the merchant’s listing, manufacturer documentation, or original reviews.

Who could use it?
Launch access
At launch, the feature was limited to Perplexity Pro users in the United States. Buy With Pro worked only for participating merchants and eligible products. If a product did not support Perplexity’s checkout integration, the shopper was sent to the merchant’s website instead. Perplexity said it planned to expand beyond the United States.

Current terminology and access
Perplexity’s current support page calls the workflow Instant Buy. It says U.S.-based users can search for and purchase products from participating merchants and that Pro Search is not required, although Pro Search may produce more detailed or tailored recommendations. This does not mean every U.S. user can purchase every product inside Perplexity: support remains dependent on the merchant and item.

How the original Buy With Pro checkout worked
- Subscribe to Perplexity Pro.
- Search for a product or describe the requirements in natural language.
- Compare the returned product cards.
- Select an eligible item and choose Buy With Pro.
- Enter shipping and payment information.
- Save those details for later checkout if desired.
- Submit the order through Perplexity.
The current equivalent is labeled Instant Buy: select the option when it appears, use or enter checkout details, receive confirmation, and rely on the merchant for fulfillment and delivery.
When checkout is unavailable
- No Buy With Pro or Instant Buy button generally means the product or merchant is not supported.
- Some merchants may offer a separate Buy with Shop Pay path; that is distinct from Buy With Pro.
- Unsupported purchases require checkout on the merchant’s own site.
Perplexity facilitates discovery and checkout, but the merchant receives the order and payment and fulfills it. Contact the merchant for cancellations, returns, damaged goods, missing deliveries, and warranty claims.

The available launch sources do not establish a complete, current provenance policy for every field. Information may come from merchant-provided catalog data, indexed sources, or Perplexity-generated summaries. Prices, stock and delivery estimates can change, so verify them at checkout.
Was free shipping permanent?
No permanent benefit is established. Perplexity said Pro subscribers would receive free shipping for Buy With Pro purchases, while its launch FAQ described the offer as lasting “for a short period only.” Treat free shipping as a launch-era promotion, not a current entitlement, unless the live checkout explicitly shows it.

How merchants participated
Perplexity announced a free Merchant Program through which businesses could provide product specifications and catalog information, integrate checkout and obtain API access for building Perplexity-powered search on their own sites. The launch post also described a merchant dashboard with search and shopping trend insights and the ability to restrict a merchant’s search index to its own products.
Perplexity said more complete merchant data could improve a product’s chance of being recommended. That is not a ranking guarantee, paid placement promise or evidence of a particular traffic or conversion rate. Shopify integrations helped Perplexity access information from U.S. merchants using Shopify, but Shopify participation did not automatically make every merchant or product eligible for Buy With Pro.
Were recommendations unbiased?
Perplexity said shopping was separate from its advertising product, that there were no sponsored product slots at launch, and that it was not taking an affiliate cut from purchases at that time. Those statements describe the launch position; they do not prove that recommendations were neutral in every respect.
Selection can still be affected by factors such as:
- Which merchants supply usable, up-to-date catalog data.
- Which products support native checkout.
- Which sellers and reviews are indexed.
- Differences in inventory, shipping or price freshness.
- How Perplexity weighs relevance, price, reviews, availability and merchant participation.
Because the ranking system is not fully documented in the cited sources, shoppers should treat recommendations as a shortlist and compare the underlying listings.

Privacy, accuracy and consumer-protection trade-offs
Convenience versus control
Stored shipping and payment details make repeat checkout faster, but they also make account security and payment-data handling important. The cited FAQ confirms saved checkout details but does not establish Perplexity’s complete retention, deletion or payment-tokenization architecture. If you do not want details stored, use the retailer’s checkout instead.
Curated results versus breadth
A short AI-generated list can omit new brands, local sellers, used or refurbished inventory, and products with incomplete catalog data. Ask follow-up questions with exact constraints—budget, dimensions, compatibility, return policy or delivery deadline—and then inspect the original listing.
Merchant accountability
For expensive, technical, regulated or time-sensitive purchases, verify warranty terms, return restrictions, bundle contents, seller reputation, delivery dates, taxes and subscription terms directly with the merchant or manufacturer.

Common problems and what to do
- No Instant Buy button: Use the merchant’s website; the item may not be integrated.
- Price or stock looks wrong: Refresh the merchant listing and confirm the final checkout total.
- The recommendation misses your needs: Add precise constraints and ask for alternatives.
- The summary sounds overconfident: Check original reviews, specifications and warranty pages.
- Wrong variant: Verify size, color, storage, model number, voltage and bundle contents.
- Shipping is unclear: Do not assume the 2024 free-shipping promotion still applies.
- Order problem: Contact the merchant, which handles fulfillment and delivery.
Bottom line for shoppers
Perplexity’s 2024 shopping launch was an AI-assisted product-discovery and checkout layer, not a universal marketplace. Buy With Pro initially targeted U.S. Pro subscribers; the current name is Instant Buy, and Perplexity now says Pro Search is not required for U.S. users. It is most useful for narrowing an open-ended shopping decision, while retailer and marketplace sites remain the authoritative places to verify price, availability, delivery, returns, warranties and post-purchase support.
