People Data Labs Raised $45 Million in a 2021 Series B

People Data Labs announced a $45 million Series B on November 16, 2021. Craft Ventures led the round, with Flex Capital participating. The financing was intended to expand the company’s developer-focused business supplying people and company data through APIs—not simply to build another prospecting app.

What People Data Labs raised and who invested

PDL said Craft Ventures led the $45 million Series B and Flex Capital participated. Craft Ventures’ Jeff Fluhr joined PDL’s board; Auren Hoffman of Flex Capital continued as an adviser, according to the company’s announcement. The announcement did not disclose a valuation. PDL’s November 16, 2021 announcement is the primary source for the round.

This is a historical funding event, not a new financing announcement. The $45 million amount and date are also reflected in PDL’s company-schema documentation.

What People Data Labs sells

PDL supplies structured business and professional data for use in other companies’ products, analytics, and workflows. In 2021 coverage, its core offerings included an Enrichment API, which adds information to an existing person or company record, and a Search API, which lets a customer query PDL’s broader dataset without hosting the full collection. The reported data categories included professional, résumé, contact, social, demographic, firmographic, and company information. VentureBeat’s coverage of the round described that API-led model.

PDL’s current product presentation includes person, company, and job-posting data, with job-posting data marked beta; enrichment, search, autocomplete, and data-cleaning APIs; and delivery through data feeds, Snowflake, and Databricks, alongside Zapier and Make integrations. These are current product signals, not a list of features established as available at the time of the 2021 raise. See PDL’s current site and its API documentation.

Why the API model mattered

A sales-intelligence product typically gives salespeople a ready-to-use prospecting workflow. A data-infrastructure provider instead supplies records and access tools that another business can incorporate into its own software or internal systems. The distinction is useful, but not absolute: PDL data can support sales and marketing as well as recruiting, fintech, and analytics, while sales-intelligence vendors may also offer APIs or feeds.

VentureBeat reported that some businesses viewed as competitors were actually PDL customers using its data underneath their own products. The model can therefore make PDL less visible to end users while placing it inside multiple downstream applications. It also shifts work to the buyer: teams may need engineers to integrate the API, build matching logic, monitor data quality, and manage changes to schemas or coverage.

How PDL said it would use the funding

At the time of the announcement, PDL reported about 80 employees and said it planned to roughly double its workforce, particularly in engineering and product. Management also identified fintech applications, fraud detection, risk mitigation, insurance underwriting, expanded firmographic and company data, investment research, sales planning, and investor due diligence as areas of focus. These were stated plans, not evidence that the hiring or product expansion was later completed.

PDL described a dataset of about 3 billion B2B records or people profiles globally in the 2021 funding coverage. That is a historical company-reported scale figure; it should not be treated as a current count or as proof of 3 billion unique, complete, actively employed people.

Who used PDL and what the examples establish

The 2021 coverage named IBM, Kleiner Perkins, The Home Depot, BreezyHR, SugarCRM, 6sense, Lunchclub, and Gem as PDL customers or users. These examples show the range of organizations cited at the time, from enterprise and investment firms to recruiting and sales-software businesses; they do not establish that each remains a customer today.

What buyers should examine before relying on people data

People and company records can be useful inputs, but an API response is not automatically verified truth. PDL’s descriptions of freshness, accuracy, and compliance are company claims; the funding coverage did not independently audit them. Before adopting any provider for a consequential workflow, buyers should establish how records are sourced, refreshed, matched, corrected, and removed, and what contractual, security, and lawful-use obligations apply.

  • Check matching and provenance. A wrong person or company match can contaminate downstream systems. Preserve source and retrieval timestamps, and distinguish verified fields from inferred or stale ones.
  • Set refresh and correction rules. Decide how often records are rechecked and how users can correct inaccurate information. Frequent updates may improve currentness but complicate historical comparisons.
  • Review privacy and permitted use. Confirm notice, consent where applicable, opt-out, deletion, access-control, retention, and jurisdictional requirements with the vendor and counsel. A vendor’s compliance statement does not establish that every customer use is lawful.
  • Apply heightened review to consequential decisions. Do not assume third-party data is appropriate as the sole basis for hiring, credit, insurance, fraud, or other financial decisions. Check applicable sector rules and the specific contract.
  • Protect the integration. Review what data is sent to an endpoint, security terms, rate limits, quotas, production access requirements, support, schema-change notices, and dependency risks before building a core workflow around it.
  • Test operational fit. Compare match accuracy, field coverage, refresh cadence, usage rights, warehouse options, and total implementation cost—not just headline record counts.

How to assess the platform against alternatives

The useful comparison is the job the buyer needs done. PDL’s API and feed orientation may suit a technical team embedding external data into its own application or analytics stack. A company seeking a turnkey sales-engagement interface may instead prioritize an end-user prospecting platform. ZoomInfo, Apollo, and Lusha are relevant businesses in the wider B2B-data and prospecting market, but current pricing, feature parity, and access terms are not established here; compare their live documentation and contracts directly.

What the 2021 announcement does—and does not—show

The raise established that investors backed PDL’s plan to scale a data-infrastructure business. It did not establish the company’s later headcount, product results, revenue, data accuracy, or regulatory suitability. PDL’s current site shows a broader product surface than the APIs described in contemporaneous funding coverage, but those current offerings should not be projected backward onto the Series B announcement.
