PC Shipments Fell 17.3% in Q3 2022—But Estimates Differed

The 17.3% figure was a simple average of IDC and Gartner estimates for global PC shipments in Q3 2022, with Apple accounting for the biggest vendor-level disagreement.

The headline refers to global PC shipments in the third quarter of 2022, not a current sales report. The 17.3% decline was a simple average of two estimates: IDC put the year-over-year drop at 15%, while Gartner put it at 19.5%. Those firms used different market definitions, so 17.3% is a useful shorthand—not a single official measurement. The original update was published October 11, 2022.

What the 17.3% figure measures

It measures estimated worldwide shipments of PCs during Q3 2022 compared with Q3 2021. Shipments are units sent into the sales channel; they are not necessarily units purchased by end users in that quarter. The figures do not directly measure PC revenue, installed-base use, business spending, or U.S. retail sales.

The headline’s word “sales” is therefore looser than the underlying measure. IDC reported traditional PC shipments, while Gartner counted PCs running Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS. Their product definitions were not identical; IDC’s traditional-PC count excluded some detachable and slate tablets, and category treatment can affect comparisons. The report summary describes the firms’ estimates and definitions.

How the estimates compare

Analyst Estimated Q3 2022 shipments Year-over-year change
IDC 74.3 million Down 15%
Gartner About 68 million Down 19.5%
Canalys Not stated in the cited summary Down about 18%

All three estimates indicate a substantial downturn. The range—from 15% to 19.5%—is more informative than treating one blended figure as exact. The estimates and comparison are summarized in the October 2022 update.

Why the headline used 17.3%

The update averaged IDC’s 15% decline and Gartner’s 19.5% decline: (15.0 + 19.5) ÷ 2 = 17.25%, rounded to 17.3%. It also averaged their volume estimates: (74.3 million + 68 million) ÷ 2 = 71.15 million, or roughly 71 million shipments.

This is arithmetic, not a formal consensus forecast. Averaging estimates built from different definitions and data methods makes a compact summary, but it does not reconcile those differences or create a more authoritative count.

HP About 12.7 million No. 2
Dell About 12 million No. 3
Apple About 7.9 million No. 4
ASUS About 5.5 million No. 5

The ranking is a unit-based estimate, not a ranking by revenue. The underlying vendor estimates are reported in the original article.

Why Apple’s estimates differed so sharply

Apple was the largest vendor-level outlier. IDC estimated about 10 million Apple units and 40.2% year-over-year growth; Gartner estimated about 5.6 million and a sharp decline; Canalys estimated about 8 million and 1.7% growth. Those are competing analyst estimates, not confirmed Apple unit totals. Apple does not regularly disclose hard unit-sales figures, so analysts must estimate shipments.

The available summary establishes the gap, but not a definitive cause for it. Differences in product definitions, shipment-channel data, reporting cutoffs, regional coverage, inventory treatment, or how desktop and notebook shipments are estimated can contribute to divergence. It would be unwarranted to select one explanation—or declare one firm wrong—without evidence that isolates the cause. The reported estimates show the scale of the Apple disagreement.

What the downturn does—and does not—show

Q3 2022 followed exceptional PC demand during the pandemic period, but the shipment figures alone do not establish a complete causal account of the decline. They do not prove how much came from demand normalization, inventory changes, inflation, enterprise budgets, supply conditions, or any other specific factor.

  • It does show that the major analyst estimates all pointed to a steep year-over-year contraction in global PC shipments.
  • It does not show that every manufacturer declined equally; Apple’s estimated direction and scale varied markedly by analyst.
  • It does not establish a long-term structural collapse, a matching fall in revenue, or a current market trend.
  • It should not be read as a measure of consumer purchases alone, since shipments can enter retailer or distributor inventory before reaching an end user.
