Creators who need one-to-one transition help are told to contact Patreon Support by September 30, 2026. The claim that Patreon has stopped requiring the change is not supported by its current official policy.

Patreon’s billing-model guidance and its specific migration guides for first-of-the-month billing and per-creation billing describe the transition. Engadget reported in January 2026 that Patreon said Apple had renewed a requirement for creators to move to subscription billing, with the same November deadline. That reporting does not establish that Apple controls every Patreon transaction worldwide.
Billing model is not payment method
A billing model determines when and how Patreon charges members: for example, per creation, monthly on the first, or monthly on each member’s signup date. A payment method is how a member funds a charge, such as with a card or PayPal. The migration concerns the first. Members who need to change a card or other funding source follow Patreon’s separate payment-information instructions; the billing-model policy does not itself say that they must replace a working payment method.
Which creators are affected?
The deadline applies to creators still using legacy billing, rather than every Patreon creator. Those models include per-creation billing and older monthly arrangements, including monthly non-charge-upfront and first-of-the-month configurations. Patreon also discusses charge-upfront in its billing documentation; whether an existing setup needs a particular migration depends on the circumstances Patreon identifies for that account.

New creators generally start on subscription billing and cannot choose legacy models for a new account. Existing members and new members may not have identical charge schedules during a transition: the result depends on the creator’s former model and the migration process. Per-creation creators should not assume they can switch themselves through a simple setting; Patreon’s migration guide directs them to one-to-one Product Support assistance.
How subscription billing works for members
Joining and renewals
A new member pays when joining, then is generally charged monthly on the same calendar date. For example, someone who joins April 12 may renew May 12 and June 12, rather than being charged again on May 1. Patreon notes that processing may depend on time zones and its billing rules. This can mean a member joining near month-end pays again near that date the following month.

Existing first-of-the-month members
For a move from first-of-the-month billing, Patreon says existing members continue to be charged on the first; new members after migration are charged on their join-date cycle. The creator’s payout schedule does not change as a result of that migration, according to Patreon’s guide. Do not assume that every member’s date resets on the day the creator changes models.
Upgrades, downgrades, and annual memberships
- Upgrades: Patreon says upgrades generally charge the outstanding difference immediately.
- Downgrades: The lower tier generally takes effect at the next billing date, so the member may retain the higher tier until then.
- Annual memberships: Patreon says these are available to eligible creators using subscription or charge-upfront billing; annual memberships have their own renewal rules.
Payment failures are a separate risk from the migration itself. Patreon’s general billing guide says members whose payments repeatedly fail may eventually be converted to free members, describing an approximately 30-day failure period; creators should consult the current guide for the applicable handling.

Why Apple is part of the story
Patreon’s explanation connects the change to Apple’s in-app purchase system: its support documentation says that system supports subscription billing and that subscription billing is required for relevant iOS purchasing flows. Engadget’s January 2026 account attributes the renewed requirement to Apple and says Patreon disagreed with the decision.
That does not mean every member pays through Apple, or that Apple directly sets the terms of every Patreon transaction around the world. A member’s purchase route matters. In particular, any App Store fee or creator price adjustment depends on Patreon’s settings and the member’s iOS purchase path; the available policy information does not support a single universal fee calculation for all creators or members.

What creators should weigh before the transition
Cash flow and publishing cadence
First-of-the-month billing can concentrate member charges around one date; subscription renewals spread them across the month. A creator who budgets for shipping, production, payroll, or taxes around a concentrated payout may need to reconsider that timing. For irregular publishers, a rolling monthly charge also raises a practical question: what does a member receive during a month with fewer releases?
Benefits and tier design
Subscription billing fits access that lasts for a membership period, but fixed-date or physical rewards may need a clear eligibility cutoff and batch-fulfillment schedule. Patreon says subscription billing can support features such as free trials, Autopilot, gifting, discounts, and tier repricing, subject to eligibility and availability. Those features do not remove the need to spell out reward timing.

- Describe whether a late-month joiner receives the current archive, upcoming releases, or both.
- For physical rewards, define the cutoff date and which paid members qualify for each shipment.
- For irregular publishing, consider whether tier benefits should promise access over a period rather than a set number of posts.
- Check how prices and fees appear through web and iOS purchase paths before communicating a price change.
Irreversibility and member communication
Patreon says enabling subscription billing is permanent for the account and cannot be reversed to another billing model. Before switching, creators should review tier terms and operational needs, then explain to members what will change, what will stay the same, how renewal dates work, and how rewards or community integrations will be handled.
Dates and next steps
- By September 30, 2026: Contact Patreon Support if the account needs one-to-one migration assistance, especially for per-creation billing.
- Before October 31, 2026: Review tiers, benefit eligibility, delivery schedules, cash-flow assumptions, and member messaging so the transition is not a surprise.
- By November 1, 2026: Complete the required move from legacy billing to subscription billing, following the process Patreon specifies for the existing model.
Creators considering a different platform should first identify the actual constraint—per-creation charges, renewal timing, iOS purchase economics, benefit management, or control of member relationships. These services are options to investigate, not one-for-one replacements for Patreon:
- Ko-fi combines support, memberships, commissions, and digital products; verify current fees and whether its tier and benefit tools fit your setup.
- Buy Me a Coffee may suit simpler support pages, one-off contributions, and memberships, but may not fit complex tiers or advanced benefit workflows.
- Memberful is geared toward paid memberships connected to a creator’s own site; it requires more setup and does not replicate Patreon’s built-in discovery ecosystem.
- Fourthwall is relevant if memberships need to sit alongside merchandise, digital products, or a storefront; its commerce features may be unnecessary for a simple support page.
- A direct website using Stripe can offer more control over checkout and billing logic, but leaves the creator responsible for matters such as hosting, taxes, compliance, support, failed payments, and audience acquisition.
Compare recurring memberships, per-creation support, product sales, physical fulfillment, community tools, payout timing, payment processing, tax handling, app-store purchasing, discovery, and member-data exportability before moving. The services above should not be assumed to provide the same features or audience reach.
