The deal closed nine days later. RedLock brought tools for discovering cloud assets, detecting threats, monitoring compliance and automating remediation across major public-cloud platforms.
What Palo Alto Networks paid for RedLock
The announced transaction price was approximately $173 million in cash. Palo Alto Networks described that figure as excluding purchase-price adjustments when it announced the closing on October 12, 2018. The October 3 announcement and the completion release use the approximate $173 million cash figure.
In its fiscal 2019 Form 10-K, Palo Alto Networks reported total purchase consideration of $158.2 million. That accounting figure comprised $155.0 million in cash paid at closing and $3.2 million representing the fair value of unvested equity awards attributable to services performed before the acquisition. The $173 million announcement and the $158.2 million accounting total are not directly interchangeable: the company presented them using different transaction-price and accounting definitions. Palo Alto Networks’ 2019 Form 10-K gives the closing consideration breakdown.

What RedLock added to cloud security
RedLock was a cloud-threat-defense company focused on analytics for public-cloud environments. Palo Alto Networks said it would combine RedLock with its existing Evident technology to offer cloud-security analytics, advanced threat detection, and continuous security and compliance monitoring across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Cloud asset discovery and compliance
RedLock could continuously discover and inventory resources across multiple public-cloud providers. It could also generate one-click compliance reports for NIST, PCI, HIPAA, GDPR and CIS frameworks, helping security teams assess cloud configurations against recognized requirements.
Threat detection and automated response
The platform was designed to prioritize vulnerabilities, detect cloud threats, support incident investigations and automate responses to security risks and policy violations. Palo Alto Networks presented this automation as a way to move beyond manual investigations toward real-time remediation and reports that highlight organizational cloud risks.

One example illustrates the intended workflow: if a cloud security group is accidentally left open and its MongoDB virtual machine receives traffic from a known malicious IP address, RedLock could identify the exposure and automatically move the database to a private security group. That example describes the company’s stated capability, not a guarantee that every deployment would remediate every incident without configuration or oversight.

The acquisition strengthened Palo Alto Networks’ public-cloud security strategy by pairing RedLock’s analytics and response capabilities with its existing cloud-security technology. At the time, the company said it served more than 6,000 cloud customers globally. Chairman and CEO Nikesh Arora said RedLock would help the company expand its security offerings for multi-cloud environments, including AWS, GCP and Azure.

The announcement’s practical emphasis was visibility across providers, continuous monitoring and faster action on identified risks. In other words, RedLock was not simply a portfolio addition: its analytics were intended to help security teams find cloud resources and misconfigurations, assess threats and automate selected corrective actions.
