Re:

Paid Tax While Filing ITR but It Is Not Showing on the Portal: What to Do

A bank debit, challan/CIN, portal CRN and ITR tax schedule are separate checks. Follow this sequence to find and resolve a missing tax payment.

If your bank account was debited but the tax payment is missing from the Income Tax e-Filing portal or your filed return, treat the issue as three separate checks: confirm the bank transaction and challan/CIN, verify the portal’s CRN and Payment History status, and confirm that the payment was entered in the correct ITR schedule. For an online payment that was debited but has not yet updated, the Income Tax Department advises checking again after 30 minutes.

First, identify where the payment disappeared

What you can see What it means Next action
Bank debit, but no challan receipt or CIN The transaction may not have completed or the bank response may still be pending. Check the bank transaction and e-Pay Tax Payment History before paying again.
Challan receipt/CIN exists, but CRN is not marked “Paid” The portal may be waiting for the bank or payment-gateway response, or reconciliation may have found a mismatch. Recheck after 30 minutes for an online debit; preserve the receipt and bank confirmation.
CRN is paid, but the return does not show the amount The payment may not have been entered in the relevant ITR schedule or may be linked to the wrong return context. Verify the payment fields in the filed or prepared return and use the appropriate correction or support route.

1. Confirm that the tax payment completed

Find the e-Pay Tax challan receipt and look for the Challan Identification Number (CIN). According to the Income Tax Department’s e-Pay Tax guidance, a successful payment generates a receipt containing the CIN and changes the related CRN to “Paid” in Payment History.

  • Match the taxpayer PAN, tax year or assessment year, amount, payment date and tax minor head on the receipt with your intended payment.
  • Save the receipt as well as the bank debit confirmation or statement entry.
  • Do not make a second payment solely because the bank balance changed; first establish whether the original transaction is pending, paid or failed.

A bank debit by itself is not the Department’s confirmation that the challan has been accepted.

2. Check CRN status and Payment History

  1. Sign in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and open e-Pay Tax.
  2. Open Payment History and locate the CRN for the same taxpayer and payment.
  3. Review the status and download any available receipt or challan.

If the account was debited but the CRN is not “Paid”

For an online payment, the Department says to check again after 30 minutes while the portal waits for the bank or payment-gateway response. Keep the transaction reference, debit time and receipt details available during that interval.

If the status says “Incorrect details from Bank”

This status means the CIN details supplied by the bank do not match the portal’s records. It can change after the bank sends corrected information through reconciliation. Do not discard the bank confirmation or challan receipt; they are the evidence needed if the mismatch remains.

3. Check the payment entry in the ITR itself

A paid challan does not automatically populate every field of an income-tax return. The Department requires payment details to be entered in the relevant schedule of the ITR to claim the challan.

  • Open the return for the correct assessment year and filing context.
  • Check that the challan serial number, BSR or relevant bank details, date and amount match the receipt.
  • Make sure the payment is classified under the correct tax type or minor head.
  • Compare the tax-paid figure in the computation with the amount actually paid.

If the return has already been filed and the portal shows the challan as paid but the return calculation does not, determine whether the problem is a missing schedule entry, an incorrect challan detail or a return-processing issue. Avoid claiming the same payment twice.

4. Escalate a persistent mismatch

After the 30-minute recheck (for an online debit), and after confirming the receipt and return entry, use the Income Tax portal’s grievance facility if the records still disagree. The grievance service covers e-Filing, Assessing Officer (AO), CPC-TDS and CPC-ITR matters.

  • A grievance can be submitted even without portal registration.
  • You can check grievance status before or after signing in.
  • e-Verification is not required for submitting the grievance.
  • Include the PAN, assessment year, CRN, CIN, transaction reference, payment date, amount, bank confirmation and screenshots of the portal status.

Use the published e-Filing or CPC support channel for technical or processing issues. Contact your jurisdictional AO when the matter concerns a correction that the portal cannot perform or when the Department directs you to do so.

5. When challan correction is appropriate

Challan correction is not a general way to force a missing payment into a return. The Income Tax Department’s Challan Correction FAQs limit online correction to specified minor-head and other eligible fields. PAN, TAN and name cannot be corrected online; those cases must be taken to the jurisdictional AO.

Before submitting a correction

  • Check the live portal’s correction options for that specific challan.
  • Confirm that the requested change is one of the eligible fields.
  • Retain the original receipt, CIN and bank proof.
  • If a correction request remains pending beyond a reasonable period, raise a portal grievance or contact the jurisdictional AO.

Documents to keep ready

  • e-Pay Tax challan receipt showing the CIN
  • CRN and Payment History screenshot
  • Bank statement or payment-gateway confirmation showing the debit
  • ITR acknowledgement and the relevant tax-payment schedule
  • PAN, assessment year, amount and payment date
  • Any error message, including “Incorrect details from Bank”

When should you pay again?

Do not immediately repeat the payment while the first transaction is still being reconciled. A duplicate payment can create a separate credit that must later be adjusted or refunded. Pay again only after establishing that the original transaction failed or was reversed, or after obtaining appropriate guidance from the Department or your tax professional.

Portal labels, bank availability and correction rules can change. The operational guidance summarized here reflects Income Tax Department pages accessed on 28 September 2026, so verify the current options and instructions on the live portal before submitting a new payment or correction.
